Would you pay to smoke onboard?

I am assuming that most people that are replying to this subject are from North America (USA, Canada and Mexico). However, I’ve got a question. The cruises that are in Europe and Asia do they restrict smoking on their ships in Europe and Asia.  The Europeans and Asian people are notorious smokers. As for me, never smoked a day in my life but the cruise ships keep enough smoke away from me that I have no problem at all on ships.  I did notice that the Carnival ships smell more Smokey than the Norwegian ships.  Can anyone answer my question. TYIA

No they don't. We have switched to the European lines and they are very smoker friendly.

NCL is getting pretty restrictive on their newer ships with regards to smoking areas (or lack thereof).  I suspect as their other ships come in for a refurb/dry dock, that trend will continue with what they’ve done on the Bliss, Joy, Encore, etc.

I’m a non-smoker, and have no dog in this hunt.  I’m not a non-smoking zealot, either.  Just someone observing what’s happening, and smoking is being phased out on NCL’s ships, sooner rather than later.

Agreed Ncl is the most restrictive American line. I think most smokers have found other lines to cruise with at this point. So they might as well outright ban it.

Disagree. Think celebrity is the most restrictive American line. I know that casinos are completely smoke free. I think they have absolutely no indoor smoking areas.

Celebrity is the best for non-smokers.   The main difference between NCL and Celebrity is that you can smoke in the casino on NCL, not on Celebrity.

HAL was the worst, since until 2016, you could smoke on your balcony.

It may take them longer but they will be there too eventually.

Not in our lifetime. The Europeans have very different attitude when it comes to smoking. Just home from a 3 week vacation in Italy and Greece and smoking, drinking and the least  amount of swimwear you can wear are still common place.

Azamara have just one small outside area for smokers.

P&O have no indoor smoking at all.

You mus be well into your 70s (or older) to make such a statement.  It really does not matter what attitude Europeans have.  It is the cruise line owners who matter.

Vaping IS smoking

You are completely wrong.  Vaping is water.  A vaporizer that mimics smoke, but is basically steam that is inhaled.  The liquid that is used to create the vapor may or may not have added nicotine.  There is no smoke or burning of tobacco.  Vaping IS NOT SMOKING.

Yes and the owners of the European lines have much loser rules than the American market they cater to their clientele. The cruise lines here are not the only lines in the world there any many others. We have a TUI booked and one on Mein Schiff out of Jamaica this winter. It's a great big world.

I would pay a supplement...to go on a smoke free cruise. One of the reasons we love celebrity so much is because there's no indoor smoking areas. It's VERY nice. Even the outdoor smoking areas re usually small remote areas away from everyone else.

The thing with smoking is that it's not a matter of just "I don't like the smell of it" but it's the fact that 2nd hand smoke is actually BAD for your health. So us nonsmokers don't want to be around someone else smoking not only because we can't stand the smell but mostly because of it's impact on our own health. If you want to smoke and cut your life short go ahead...but those of us that don't shouldn't have to deal with it and last I checked only about 25% of the adult population in the US smoked so that leaves 75% of us that don't.

A smoke free cruise is a dream but Celebrity does allow smoking in certain outdoor areas and we love how they have it set up. I do hope that NCL and others follow suit.

If NCL set up convenient indoor and outdoor sections dedicated only to smokers and charged a fee to access those sections (like the Vibe), would you pay the extra cost?

When I was still a smoker, I probably would have paid, depending on how much, but I don't have to worry anymore, not a smoker plus I doubt any cruise line would do this. It may not be a bad idea, but still doubt it will ever happen.

Ah I misunderstood your original response.  I thought you were talking about European sailings on NCL for example.  Yeah I agree the Europeans are either much more ignorant of the dangers of smoking or a just plain stupid enough to not care.

Vaping is NOT just 'water'.  Te liquid contains all kinds of very highly addictive and extremely dangerous chemicals.  Most contain liquid nicotine which when handled requires full hazmat suits.  Vaping is not even safe (and surely not safer than tobacco smoking as many try to convince themselves it is).  Vaping IS smoking just in a different form and it will kill you and those around you just as quickly if not quicker.

Hold on a minute, Europe is made up of many countries.  It's certainly true that some southern European countries have a more relaxed attitude to smoking but please don't tar us all with the same brush!

Wow that’s a very harsh comment to group a whole continent as stupid. No wonder the rest of the world thinks Americans are arrogant. What they are smart enough to avoid is heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure and diabetes plus all other ailments associated with obesity. But hey who’s judging!
