The fish bowl feeling is because people are walking by and can look in. It makes people in CO feel like they're on display. To me it feels like HAL is saying "look at the special people with their own dining room!" In the MDR, everyone is eating his/her meal, not watching other people eat.

If that were the case, then there would be no complaints about others following the dress code, would there?

So I get it now, if you want a view of the ocean you have to look thru a spoon.

Negative; the spoon is for passers by merrily on their way to the MDR to look inside CO in order to see what's on the menu for the few, the proud, the........whose birthday is fast approaching :classic_cool:

Got it, two way glass. Why worry about losing breakfast in the Pinnacle when they offer you Howard Johnsons?

Isn't   H J's dead and gone?   :eeks:

Have milENIALS ever heard of it?

One day some 'senior of the day'  will say likewise  re: Starbucks.  🙂

As of a report in 2016, there was one HoJo's still open in Lake George, NY.

Loved their all you could eat Clam Dinner on Friday nights.  It was one of the few things we could afford.

I love how these CC threads go off topic periodically. So as long as we're off-topic, here are some pics of the last remaining HoJo in Lake George, NY.

Not sure where the idea came from that Ho Jo’s were non existent. There are lots of Howard Johnsons (by Wyndam).  They are under the Wyndam umbrella.

There are several in Canada and quite a few still in the U.S. from their site - https://www.wyndhamhotels.com/hojo/locations

Here is the one in Bangor, Maine.  I think most of them now have blue roofs.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program 😉

You are correct. The Howard Johnson lodging chain was spun off and sold to Wyndham Hotels many years ago. Some Howard Johnson lodges do have restaurants attached, but they are not necessarily affiliated with the Wyndham/HoJo brand.

I believe what was discussed were the stand-alone HoJo, orange roofed restaurants. They were not spun off with the HoJo lodges. There is only one remaining "original" HoJo, freestanding restaurant extant.

Some additional information, for those that may be interested:

My grandmother knew the real Howard Johnson. She was actually in his wedding. (Not as his bride, unfortunately!)

I remember as a kid it being a treat to get in the car with my parents and sister and go to HoJo's on a hot Sunday afternoon to get an ice cream. They had a peppermint flavor I loved...
