bjay3 Posted January 11, 2020 #1 Share Posted January 11, 2020 Recently sailed on the Dawn and found out there were 400 cabins missing a safe. Customer service on board did not seem to think this was a problem but we tend to disagree. Talked to some other people on board who also had a problem with this. Just wondering if this is particular to the Dawn or are other ships experiencing the same deficiency??
Rare ColeThornton Posted January 11, 2020 #2 Share Posted January 11, 2020 (edited) Sounds like they might have been in the process of changing out older ones for newer models. Who told you there were 400 missing? Edited January 11, 2020 by ColeThornton
Rare mking8288 Posted January 11, 2020 #3 Share Posted January 11, 2020 I seem to recall, there has been a wave of recent complaints about broken, non-working mini safes onboard NCL's ship, could well be specific to the Dawn ... from wear & tear/being in use for about 15 years. Most likely, they're taken out and awaiting replacement ones to be installed. Was passengers given alternatives and/or explanation ? We travel smartly so nothing really important to lock up securely, worst come to worst, keep the passports, etc. inside an Eagle Creek pouch & toss it inside the backpack, kept within the rollerboard ... cutting the odds of someone coming around to grab and walk away with things, if the cabin door was unlocked or while it was being service/clean by the steward. Leave the fancy & expensive items at home or bank's safe deposit box ... Rolex Air King is 35 years old, isn't worth much but I wear that around the ship. bjay3 Posted January 11, 2020 Author #4 Share Posted January 11, 2020 We were told about the 400 safes by the crew but no explanation that they were exchanging them out, being replaced or any other solution. Just said they didn't have any and no idea when they might get new ones.
hladygirl Posted January 11, 2020 #5 Share Posted January 11, 2020 When I was on the gem last spring my safe had a lot of numbers not working. Had to set my code to 5555 cause of this.

Gershep Posted January 12, 2020 #7 Share Posted January 12, 2020 We use the safe all the time. Like to keep passport, license and extra cash in it. I would be upset if the safe wasn't working or wasn't in cabin. In September when we were on the Escape the steward not once but twice did not pull our cabin door shut. Any one passing by could have gotten into our cabin. I was happy that my stuff was in the safe.
jaja Posted January 12, 2020 #8 Share Posted January 12, 2020 I would not be happy without a working safe !! I do use it for passport, jewelry and my casino funds !!!! PS--last 2 cruises, I had problems with non working safes...had to wait to have a security officer come and fix them !! (Dawn and Gem)..

casofilia Posted January 12, 2020 #10 Share Posted January 12, 2020 I would be really unhappy if there wasn't a working safe in my cabin. Have had to call security more than once recently as it packed in during the cruise.
Rare Turtles06 Posted January 12, 2020 #11 Share Posted January 12, 2020 I am on the Gem now. The safe is an old one and the keypad does not respond well. It’s really past its prime. We also like to have a safe for our passports, drivers’ licenses, cash, and similar items. The other day, we returned from an excursion to find a maintenance crew working on our balcony. They had run an electrical cord from the passageway out to the balcony, leaving our cabin door open. They had the drapes pulled on the balcony, and could not have seen if someone had come into our cabin.

Guy had to wipe down the inside of the pad..he says they get dirty ( I am not sure how that happens on the inside ???)..but after he cleaned it...it worked fine. bjay3 Posted January 12, 2020 Author #13 Share Posted January 12, 2020 I agree with all comments that have been made here and that's why I posted our concern. We saw cabin doors left open all the time by the stewards and we had items such as passports in a cabin without a safe. Customer service onboard didn't seem to think it was an issue. They told us that they had cameras in the hall that would see someone coming out of our cabin. They refused to take responsibility for anything that might go missing. From the comments here it looks like the Dawn is the only ship without safes. I hope that is the case as we are back on NCL in March!!
purpleally Posted January 12, 2020 #14 Share Posted January 12, 2020 I’m on the Dawn in a few weeks and I consider this to be a BIG problem. Cameras in the hallway aren’t going to prove a thing. We need a safe for passports, cash, credit cards, phones. I will raise holy hell every. single. day. And I might not be too fun at the meet n greet

CookieShip Posted January 12, 2020 #17 Share Posted January 12, 2020 I was on the Dawn in November and safes thing came up during the M&G. My room had one, but a few hundred others didn't. Not that a big deal to me, I've never really used the safe in the room anyway. I'm surprised they haven't been replaced by now.

I agree with everyone who thinks this is a problem. Rooms are often left open during cleaning/maintenance. We like to put our casino cash, phones, and tablet in the safe. It is an amenity that is to be expected on the ship.

It says on their web site that safes are included, and I'm fully expecting one. I'm not gong to have a meltdown over it, but... it won't be a good way to start the cruise, for sure. Rare mking8288 Posted January 13, 2020 #25 Share Posted January 13, 2020 It should be a simple drop-in replacement, with the old mini-safe already taken out - an easy job. Put in the new one (should be pre-tested, fresh battery, etc.) and secure the 2 or 4 locking bolts thur the anchor holes to the back/bottom, tightly. A quick test to confirm proper installation, sign-off their log & move on to the next cabin ... 10 to 20 minutes, at most.
