Seven of us total. We just decided to cancel it. So sad and disappointing really. We are going to do some type of ZOOM dinner at out individual Thanksgiving tables. Smart move. We will not go into our son's home. If the weather permits we sit outside (bundled up) for about 1/2 hour. But winter will be much to cold for that. It is sad, but we have to survive this. Then we can celebrate BIG TIME!

I think ZOOM is a great idea..Not the sane as in person but safer and no one has to take on the hosting chores..with respnsibility for added safety safeguards. We do the same. Really, really missing family but will not burden our children with the thought that they possibly made us sick. They better be ready for some huge, long hugs when this is all over though.

TeeRick Posted November 25, 2020 #407 Share Posted November 25, 2020 It was estimated that 3 million people went through US airports between Friday and Sunday. They say that is 50% of normal Thanksgiving travel but still a huge number ignoring travel warnings. Not to mention the millions traveling in private autos to stay and dine with families and friends. About 2-3 weeks after Thanksgiving we will see an enormous spike in cases right before Christmas. Not looking good.
Rare hcat Posted November 26, 2020 #408 Share Posted November 26, 2020 We are in Florida..ZOOMING with dtr, sil, grandsons in New York. Rare Von & John Posted November 26, 2020 #409 Share Posted November 26, 2020 The Cousins usually have a large Thanksgiving Day Feast / Family Reunion. One of the Aunts & Uncles used to host... Now that they are no longer with us - it's held in an indoor Park Pavilion... We've not been able to join in 20+ years. This year they are doing a Zoom Call/Toast @ 8:00 AM AK Time... Thinking my Toast may be w/ a Mimosa... Happy Thanksgiving All!

mljatsea Posted November 28, 2020 #411 Share Posted November 28, 2020 We had a great Thanksgiving with just the two of us for dinner. Earlier in the day we did Zoom bingo with our daughters' families that live in our area. We were reluctant about joining them and grateful that they called it. Today is my birthday and we all met up in a parking lot between our homes. Exchanged birthday presents with our daughter whose birthday is 12/3. Here are the grandkids with their presents. 4

What a GREAT idea.....participate in these important days anyway you can. Two of my grandchildren's b'days were this week ...they live too far away to do something like this....so good wishes over zoom best we could come up with. Lovely looking kids BTW! TeeRick Posted December 9, 2020 #414 Share Posted December 9, 2020 Appropriate to the topic - How are things where you are? Here is a link to a new map and tool that looks at COVID hospitalizations specifically in your area and looks at the actual hospital data in your area. It was published yesterday. I hope it gets updated frequently. The hospitals where I live in Montgomery County PA are not overwhelmed (yet) but it is getting pretty bad post-Thanksgiving surge. https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/12/09/944379919/new-data-reveal-which-hospitals-are-dangerously-full-is-yours 1
Rare hcat Posted December 10, 2020 #415 Share Posted December 10, 2020 Thanks for the link. Sarasota Co Fl numbers not too bad yet. They say a third wave may be coming to Tampa Bay Area. Everyone here doing their best to enjoy holiday season at a distance.
TeeRick Posted December 14, 2020 #416 Share Posted December 14, 2020 Here is the latest from my state (PA). As of Dec 12th these additional restrictions were ordered by our governor. Until Jan. 4, Pennsylvania will shut down indoor dining, suspend school sports and extracurriculars, close all casinos, gyms, and other entertainment venues, lower retail occupancy limits, and sharply reduce the number of people allowed to gather in one place from Saturday. OnTheJourney Posted December 14, 2020 #417 Share Posted December 14, 2020 I'm near Reading...so only an hour away from you. Speaking of the "limitations", my wife was just reading about a restaurant who was open yesterday (in defiance of the restrictions). Said he feels people need to get out to eat and that he takes proper precautions, etc. All this while being interviewed with no mask on LOL Here's the thing - the local law enforcement doesn't want to be the heavy to cite or fine these establishments. There are several businesses right in my hometown area that routinely have been violating the masking regulations - both employees and customers. Just this morning I saw 3 younger guys in our grocery store without masks - one of whom had no compunction about going up to and asking questions of one of the employees who was stocking shelves, etc. I never would have expected this contentiousness over masking, distancing, etc.

The spread is actually exponential. But less people travel at Christmas vs. Thanksgiving. Also maybe the Thanksgiving surge has taught people a lesson. But that is truly wishful thinking. GottaKnowWhen Posted December 14, 2020 #423 Share Posted December 14, 2020 1 hour ago, OnTheJourney said: Vaccines on the way.... I heard an interesting discussion about the vaccines today. They will do a very good job keeping people from getting too ill. But even once vaccinated we will still be able to catch and transmit the covid-19. As far as they know now. So we might get sick, mild flu-like symptoms or maybe totally asymptomatic, but will still need to distance, mask, etc. to protect others. I will be in line to get the vaccine, but I will wait for those more in need to get their shot first. Stan
OnTheJourney Posted December 15, 2020 #424 Share Posted December 15, 2020 All that you're saying brings up something I've been thinking about - namely - will we wind up still wearing masks and distancing for the next several years...longer? Hate the idea of living that way longterm.
Rare lyndarra Posted December 15, 2020 #425 Share Posted December 15, 2020 Things are pretty normal where I am. I can travel interstate now that borders have reopened. No mask wearing, able to eat out, go to movies, football, cricket, beach etc. The only COVID cases are international arrivals in hotel quarantine. Still can't travel internationally but looks like New Zealand travel bubble will open soon. Having a hot and stormy summer so far. Vaccination (Pfizer) is expected to start about March as our government is watching the roll out in UK and US. Stay safe y'all.
