Airlines scheduling flights to the DR are the result of that country opening its borders, not the result of the State Department changing its travel warnings.

COVID-19 aside, are you aware that are  numerous other State Department Level 4 warnings in place? Mexico has a number of areas under Level 4 for years. That doesn't mean US citizens are prohibited from traveling there or that airlines and cruise lines don't go there. It just means that the State Department believes it's dangerous to do so.

Ok so travel warnings. Thats what i said. No big deal.  They still are sceduling flights from the us.  I agree they can still have the travel advisory. However it should be updated by july.

The US State Department Level 4 Do Not Travel notice will be lifted soon? It will? Source?

Level 4 has been in effect for parts of Mindanao, Philippines for years, with the rest of Mindanao being level 3 for decades.  US State Department needs a reason to change such warnings, does not do it lightly.  Spoke to some US Navy men who were lamenting the fact that the best surfing in the Philippines is on Mindanao, but as government employees they are forbidden to enter Mindanao.  That was in 2016, has not changed.

Can someone explain the desperate need for a passport renewal outside of a family death? Latest travel advisory is still this:

The Department of State currently has in place a ‘Level 4: Global Health Advisory,” which advises that U.S. citizens avoid all international travel because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This means most travel insurances won't even cover you if you did travel.

I see talk of people wanting to go to the Caribbean or Dominican Republic? Did they have a death in the family there? You can still get passports for those events.

People who applied for a passport renewal in February had no idea that the pandemic was going to shut the whole country down and most travel would be suspended for the rest of the year. The last time I renewed my passport, 10 years ago, I was pleasantly surprised that it took less than a month to get it back. I don’t see that anybody applied for their renewal because they suddenly had a “desperate need” to get it in the middle of a pandemic, but rather due to travel plans in the future the they thought would actually happen, sent their information in to get the renewal processed. There might be concern because the US government has cashed the checks and not provided the service, and that our valid passports are floating around out there, somewhere.

My DH and I submitted renewal applications for Global Entry this past February.  His was approved in one day, and I am still waiting for mine.  The only rationale I can see is that he is over age 75 and I am under 75.  I read on their web site that they are extending Global Entry expiration dates.  I am not likely to go in an airplane for a long time anyway.

I am under 75 so age is not the reason. They probably have a question about something in your renewal application that they want to verify. Also it is possible they might want to interview you.

My wife and I are both under 75, that has nothing to do with it. We submitted our GE renewal applications at the same time, and they were processed pretty quickly. The only difference was that my wife’s renewal was approved without an interview, and I was required to have one. This made no sense to us, because our travel record is identical.  At the interview, which was no big deal, the agent said it’s random who is selected for an interview when they are renewing. I was approved at the interview.

On the bright side Atlantic City casinos opening in a few weeks, no passport required.

Good to hear that they are starting to process applications again. I sent mine in in March due to a name change (of course I didn't realize at the time they were planning on shutting down the passport offices); to simply say they shouldn't issue passports now is a bit simplistic. I would like to take an international trip next year if the advisories go away. I'm ready to book it once two things happen: 1, I get a passport back and 2, the countries we want to go to start allowing tourist visas. So, yes, I do plan on booking a trip for the future (not to go right now obviously) and would like to have my passport back for that.

They will most likely shut out the US along with a few others. I've heard Bermuda will most likely go this way also for the rest of 2020

I noticed Carnival and Royal have cancelled Bermuda cruises for the rest of the year but Norwegian is still selling cruises to Bermuda in October and November. I wonder when they’ll make that announcement.

its very shameful that we cant trust the admin in place to tell the truth. it could happen that our passports will be considered beneath countries like mexico for example.  And could block us from entry.

Thanks for that update Laszlo! Not that it really lets you know when you might get them...but at least you know that they are being processed. For me the check was cashed on March 6th and to date I have heard nada!
