Pardon the pun but its all unchartered waters. Edited June 4, 2020 by david_sobe

trummy Posted June 4, 2020 #29 Share Posted June 4, 2020 I think we overestimate how much some of the poorer locations in the Caribbean really want cruise ships there. We stayed a week in Roatan on a land vacation. According to the locals we talked to, they would prefer cruise ships go elsewhere. They prefer those who come for a week because we eat in their restaurants and spend money in their shops instead of at the cruise port or prepaid tours from companies not based on the island. We were told that most of the excursions, even private ones, were handled by a handful of companies that did business throughout the islands and that locals benefited very little. https://today.emich.edu/story/story/10623

Bermuda is extremely restrictive in their government. They even restrict the amount of car allowed on their island. Bermuda will be one of the last countries to open to tourism. Only one car per household but each household can have multiple motor cycles/scooters/bikes. Otherwise with approx 63K ppl on a 21 sq mile island you can imagine the traffic if the restriction was relaxed - no thanks!! Our airport is still closed and it will remain so until Phase 4 which will be at a month away. We are doing good here. We’re in Phase 2 at the moment. 1
Spif Barwunkel Posted June 5, 2020 #33 Share Posted June 5, 2020 (edited) Grand Cayman, 7 ships. Cozumel, 7 ships. Nassau, 5 ships. That is how many ships were in these ports when I was visiting. Not pleasant conditions in the best of times. Do you really think that the Caribbean islands want this many ships in port at the same time if health issues are a concern? This time, having read all of the 14 posts across threads, I conclude it is NOT him. Seaman runs sentences together, without using capitals and has many spelling mistakes.....not a criticism, simply a fact....but this new poster constructs sentences properly, without spelling mistakes! There have been no posts from Seaman11 recently which is abnormal. He is either banned for a week or changed name again. It would be purely coincidental for someone else to say August smaller ships will sail again. That's been his Seaman11's stance lately.

Rare graphicguy Posted June 5, 2020 #40 Share Posted June 5, 2020 I think a big restriction for a Bermuda cruise is coming out of the New York area. Plus, they have an economy that exists outside of tourism. Caribbean and Bahamas? Sailing out of FL, and with those areas so tied to tourism, they'll open up first (and relatively quickly). I think you'll see cruises to that area in August. Ships will not sail at full capacity, and the amount of ships in port may be restricted, but they'll be open.
JustAPilot Posted June 5, 2020 #41 Share Posted June 5, 2020 Who cares, there is no money to be made from people paying $300 for an inside cabin to sail to Mexico or Bahamas in the summer unless the ship sails full. The bread and butter in the summer is Europe where you pay $1500 for an inside cabin, those are the ports that matter and you can get away with not running a full ship.

BonnieJeanne Posted June 5, 2020 #44 Share Posted June 5, 2020 I think this is the least of their worries. To restart and have a successful cruise even if it was a cruise to nowhere is the goal. There are Caribbean islands that cruising is a huge part of their economy and will welcome ships. This is a day by day, step by step process. Cruising is not going to resume at full capacity sailing to every port right away. Its going to be a slow and very long process to go back to somewhat normal.I was on the epic feb 2019 cruise to no where (engine trouble...). Lots of eating, drinking....not so bad [emoji6]Sent from my iPhone using Forums

There are already indications of this from Canada and Australia. The US would continue to host their ships because of their strong lobby group, CLIA. Would the benefits of accepting their ships outweigh the scourge from the virus. I'm in Canada and live on the west coast in a city where cruise ships used to dock before the ban. I'm also interested in going on an Alaskan cruise so I have skin in the game on every side! While I would love to not only be able to plan a cruise but my city takes in millions of dollars in revenue from the industry on a typical year. On the other hand, today it was announced that our health region now has zero Covid-19 cases and because of the measures we took early on, we had only 130 cases out of a population of over 785,000 and only 5 deaths. I don't work in a tourism based industry so personally I would prefer that everyone stayed away from my little island, please and thank you! 😂
jaja Posted June 5, 2020 #46 Share Posted June 5, 2020 I surely can see a problem if any place or ship has an outbreak and any port denying docking. This is as another has said.."uncharted waters". I cancelled my November multi port Caribbean cruise because I did not feel comfortable re: ship virus preparations/precautions AND possibility of port closures or being "stranded" at sea. I cruise to enjoy..not to worry. And all the "maybe scenarios" have me worried.
