Rare Vict0riann Posted August 28, 2020 #26 Share Posted August 28, 2020 Good morning, all, and thank you, Rich and Roy, for all you do. Pat is much better now. We went out yesterday and ordered two chairs at Lazyboy - a big recliner for him and a regular chair for me, to be upholstered in the same fabric. I will have to give up my sofa in the tv room which I am sad about, but Pat needs better support for his back. It's going to take 12 to 14 weeks to get them, but what is time during a pandemic?

Rare kazu Posted August 28, 2020 #31 Share Posted August 28, 2020 Thanks for the Daily, Rich and brightening our Friday 🙂 Love peppers. I’ll leave the bow ties to Roy who always wears them pizzazz. So true on Chicken LIttle 😉 The dinner suggestion sounds good.@gigianne - hope the weather holds out for you for your family get together, tomorrow. I think your rain ends around noon if the forecast I heard holds. @1ANGELCAT that is such a sad story on the fire chief’s son. Prayers to him and his family. @Seasick Sailor hope the mystery of your bird feeders can be solved today. I have a new perennial coming up - I know it’s a Rudbeckia. Kind of interesting as it doesn’t look like the ones I have now. At least my lofos vine is starting to bloom even if the sweet peas and cobaea scandens aren’t yet. Prayers to everyone on our care list and cheers to all the shout outs. Have a great Friday everyone. Stay safe and don’t forget your masks.

ger_77 Posted August 28, 2020 #35 Share Posted August 28, 2020 Good afternoon, thanks for the Daily! It's partway through the day, but the little one fell asleep in my arms, so I'm able to hit the computer while Grampa, the parents, and 5 year old are going through "treasure boxes" in the garage (old things of our son's from school through the years). It'll be interesting to see what comes into the house. I love the menu suggestion, but a request was put in for pulled pork for tonight, so it's already in the slow cooker. That along with coleslaw and corn on the cob should round out our dinner. And wine. Red wine? Heck yeah, today and every day! DH liked the look of bow ties on a few gentlemen on cruises, so thought he'd try it out . . . he bought some new shirts, and about 4 or 5 bow ties, and after wearing them for a bit, decided they weren't for him. I'm not sure who at the Salvation Army store now has them, but I'll bet they look dapper! Here's a shot of our living room and the little guy crashed out - anyone for a nap? Prayers to all who need them, and even for those who don't think they do. Cheers and toasts to people who are celebrating. Be safe, stay well! Smooth Sailing! 🙂🙂🙂 Gerry

travelingbums Posted August 28, 2020 #37 Share Posted August 28, 2020 MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Residents in a wide area of southeast Texas dealing with rolling electricity blackouts related to Hurricane Laura should have their power restored soon, if it is not already. Entergy Texas provided an update on Twitter around 8:30 a.m. Friday saying that it has canceled the periodic outages, which were put into place because of a widespread power loss in other areas caused by Laura. We now have our power and it is wonderful to have air conditioning. It is hot and humid here.

Sharon in AZ Posted August 28, 2020 #41 Share Posted August 28, 2020 Thank you for the Daily Rich. Thank you for the Care List Roy. Love stuffed bell peppers and my Mom made the best. I need to ask her what her secret was. The only times my husband has worn a bow tie was at our wedding (46 yrs ago this December.... I was a child bride, cough) and on our cruises on formal night. Only the past few cruises has he not worn one. Ahhh, I miss those days. Menu suggestion sounds really good but not sure what we are having tonight. I have several things defrosting from the freezer for the upcoming days. Have a great Friday everyone!
Rare Copper10-8 Posted August 28, 2020 #42 Share Posted August 28, 2020 (edited) So, I'm sure a lot of you have seen the cylindrical white containers attached to the railing towards the aft portion of the Dam ships. Inside these containers are self-inflating 35-person life rafts. The vast majority of the crew are assigned to liferafts, rather than lifeboats and/or tenders acting as lifeboats. There are, ofcourse, crew assigned to lifeboats/tenders which hold passengers. As discussed previously, drills take place on a weekly basis including abandon ship drills. During the latter, the crew assigned to the rafts will muster at their designated raft station where a roll (muster) will be taken by the raft commander similar to what passengers go through. The difference is that crew are still wearing their life vests at that event. The below pics show how a liferaft is self-inflated once in the water. This took place in the aforementioned Basic Safety course in Seattle inside a local public swimming pool (that raft was a smaller, not a 35-person raft!). Will grow to 3m / 10 feet in full sun, and is useful for hiding one's outhouse. 🙂 It likes support, heavy rains will flatten them. Sharon in AZ Posted August 28, 2020 #45 Share Posted August 28, 2020 Last night I roasted peppers. It is Hatch green chili time and Trader Joe’s had a huge package of fresh ones. I also had some jalapeños and sweet peppers that needed roasting so did a big batch.
Rare Copper10-8 Posted August 28, 2020 #46 Share Posted August 28, 2020 Talked about Bridge mascots the other day; these are Volendam's, "stuck" to the window Two of Volendam's four fire teams, about to go to Juneau's Hagevig Regional Fire Training Center for "hands-on" live fire training The crew assigned to liferaft #12 and #14 at their muster stations plus two of Volendam's lifeboats (#2 and #4) in the water off Skagway, AK during an abandon ship drill. LB #2 is the smaller of the two because on the "R"-class ships, it doubles as rescue boat SECO (security officer) cabin on Volendam's A-Deck. Nice and cozy; plus another mascot, when in Canada, eh😉 9 1

Rare Copper10-8 Posted August 28, 2020 #49 Share Posted August 28, 2020 Indonesian as well as Filipino Independence Day (the two largest nationality groups onboard) is celebrated annually onboard commencing with a flag salute and the playing of the national anthems. The Indonesians have more of a "military style" ceremony. Afterwards, there are competitions like tug-o-war (always somehow won by the Techies who seem to bring more beef to the competition), water balloon tossing, burlap potato sack race, among the various departments, and a crew party at night. The pics are of the Indonesian Independence Day ceremony inside Volendam's Frans Hals main show lounge Capt. Pieter Bos and the ship's senior management team (Chief Officer [now captain], Chief Engineer, Hotel Manager and Safety, Environmental & Health (SEH) Officer) plus Semmy, the Indonesian Unit Chairman, who in real life is Volendam's "Lampie" or Lampoonist The Indonesian Honor Guard smartly stepping off; the young lady in the center could be found in the Lido Restaurant every day serving meals! Outstanding job by her and all the other Honor Guard members!! The Honor Guard Commander (Bambang, Volendam's Provision Master) and the Indonesian Unit Chairman Semmy, also the ship's "Lampie" or Lampoonist (the guy in charge of everything having to do with lighting on the vessel) Volendam's GRM (Guest Relations Manager) and one of her International Concierges, both from the Philippines. Some of you might recognize the Beverage Manager on the far left, Ingo from Deutschland, a very funny guy Volendam's HRM (Human Resources Manager) from Sweden and one of the officer cadets (from the UK) Techies vs Deckies in Tug-o-War in the ship's Marshaling Area on A-Deck 10
