Pre cruise covid tests

If the cruise lines require a pre cruise covid test in British Columbia that test is not available to those who do not have health issues how to comply with rules in place

I don't think anyone knows what will be required / available by the time ships start sailing.

 

There are certainly lots of crew doc-in-the-box places near most ports.

Who knows, maybe there will be the same sort of thing for passengers.

According to the press release by the Cruise Lines International Association, the recent recommendations apply to U.S. Ports.

Cruises that embark & disembark in British Columbia (Vancouver) go mostly to Alaskan US ports and therefore the CLIA recommendations will likely apply. 

Like Roberto256 mentioned regarding crew "doc-in-the-box" places I would not be surprised if some entrepreneuring doctor will provide the same for passengers of cruise ships, at a price ofcourse.

Hawaii has secured 'contracts' with vendors to do pre travel testing. Currently, they have CVS and Kaiser. CVS currently requires symptoms to schedule getting a test, but my understanding the contract with Hawaii will allow testing with proof of booked travel within 3 days, makes sense Cruiselines will have similar contracts/protocols as they will want to have confidence you provide a legitimate test result from a trusted provider. 

 

Hawaii pre travel test program to start on October 15. It has already been delayed 3 times, originally scehuled for August 1, then September 1, then October 1, now October 15. Hopefully thier model will be the template for other industries to follow for the time being.

Interesting news from Finland that they have trained dogs to sense the COVID infections with near 100% accuracy (???) and can detect asymptomatic individuals who will start showing symptoms within a week.  They are testing it right now in the Helsinki airport.  Travelers will wipe their body with cotton and place it in a cup for the dog to sniff.  Could this be the future of not only air travel but cruising?  Interesting story to follow in the coming weeks/months.

There are several mail order covid test kits available with 48 - 72 hour response.  They email your test results to you, so you can print them out and take them with you.  When you fill out the evaluation form to get the test you indicate "potential expsosure",  pay for it online, and they mail it to you.

 

Surprising how different places respond to this virus.  My son called this morning to tell me one of his office workers stayed home because he lost his sense of smell and had a cold.  So, my son scheduled a drive through covid test at 10:30 am, and drove in at noon.  He has no symptoms, but potential exposure, and had no problem getting his test.

Mail in tests would never be approved for any kind of travel.  Who can tell who took the test ?

Same is true for any test result presented to the travel vendor.  Unless they administer the test themselves, it's the honor system.

Seems there is ongoing trouble with mail-in stuff  🤔.

Right now the issue in Canada is that due to demand it can take upto 5 days to get the results, so having a test in the past 72 hrs, we could still be waiting for results.

I know someone who did this for a Mexican resort recently.

From the 69 Page Healthy Sail Panel recommendations to the CDC:

 

"As discussed throughout this document, testing for all individuals boarding cruise ships is a critically important step in reducing the likelihood of virus introduction on board the ship. All guests and short-term vendors, contractors, startup employees, and shoreside employees boarding a cruise ship should be tested 24 hours to 5 days before the cruise, so that they are able to receive a negative result prior to beginning their travel via land or air transportation to the port for embarkation. If a guest receives a positive result, they and their close contacts should not travel to the embarkation point."

The HI pre-traveler Covid testing program is still in development and it is based off of other programs like AK.  CVS has not set it self up yet to provide dedicated Covid testing for HI travelers.  UA and Hawaiian Airlines have the only concrete plans to offer same day testing for UA passengers in SFO for $250 per person tested.  Hawaiian Airlines announced they will have testing in SFO and LAX for $90 for a 36 hour turn result around and $150 for same day testing.  There will be many parts of the US where there will be no dedicated HI testing.  

 

All of these tests will be required to be paid by the traveler and insurance will not pay.  Labs will only be open for limited times at airports too so traveler coordination will be a challenge.  A family of four can expect to pay UA $1,000 to test in SFO and avoid a 14 day quarantine in HI.
