That is one of the benefits of the UK system... For those that want they do offer more private options than is available in Canada.

Even in UK there are a lot of firms that offer private healthcare as a perk. Though not as many as in the USA. Or you can pay yourself either through an insurance scheme or lump payment. My mother wanted a particular surgeon when she had a hip replacement and didn't want to wait months for free NHS treatment so paid for the procedure at a private hospital.

But, you did pay for it while you were working, right?  How different do you think the US is, really?  Up until age 26, kids can stay on their parents insurance here.  Unemployed and those on various benefits have access to gov programs.  Don't believe everything you see on the news about US insurance/healthcare because a lot of it isn't true.

TBH I know nothing about the US healthcare system.

Yes, we have friends in Canada and they have talked about those they know that have come to the US for certain procedures, such as hip replacement.  But, wow, nothing like freedom, huh?  You obviously know the benefit of the US system and I hate that the UK and Canada make the US out to have this horrible system and that so many are uninsured, when the reality is, a lot who are unisured choose to be because they don't want to pay for it  and there are options for those that really can't afford it.

This is exactly true and the biggest lie that has been foisted upon the Canadian citizenry.  Prior to making my home in the US, I went without a GP for 5 years because none were taking new patients, I had to wait 9 months for a very necessary MRI and my wife had to wait 13 months cataract surgery.  I could go on and on with horror stories but I'll probably just rile up some of the Canadian posters here on CC.  That is not my intent.  Everyone I know, both rich and poor, has access to decent healthcare insurance in the US.

I suspect that the UK is much like Canads, for all its faults the vast majority of residents would not trade their healthcare system for what exists in the US. In Canada elections have been lost on the suggestion of even partial privatization.

One can find horror stories in any healthcare system. Let's just hope that none of them come out of getting everyone vaccinated.

Problem is, those that are afraid of a system like we have here know nothing about it except what they are fed by those running for office.  They want the tax money and to keep people dependent which is a huge part of gov run healthcare.  I, for one, can't wait for the vaccine to come out here.

I worked with a couple of Canadians (Frenchies from Quebec) last year on a little project here in TX.  At lunch one day they started asking about health care.  After I explained our system, costs, availability of services, etc., they paused, looked at each other, and said to me they wish they had our system.

You only have twenty odd million more to convert. ☺

I'm not terribly interested in turning this thread into a discussion of healthcare systems. You can keep your preference. I'll keep mine. Let's leave it at that.

So it goes, those that accuse are usually guilty of what they accuse others of.   It was merely a conversation and a comparing of notes.  Lots of us open-minded educated people still have those you know.  Try it out!

By the way, people from Quebec having French as their mother tongue are more commonly referred to as Francophones.  Now, you’re even more educated!

She must have been asymptomatic. There is no way she cannot have caught it from you. As so far as I am aware NO ONE has "natural immunity" to the virus like for instance Matt Damon's character in contagion. If they had found a person who had a "natural immunity" to covid they would have been quick to announce it surely?

We know a couple who one tested positive 3 times and was sick and she was tested 3 times and was negative each time and she had no symptoms.

He caught it at a family function with 3 other couples. They all stayed at an Airbnb with a shared common area. There were 8 family members. Seven ended up testing positive and his wife did not.  I can’t explain it.

He was the only one of the 8 that had any symptoms.

Not in a socialist healthcare system.  There is much the same problem here in Canada.  Between horrible wait times for important medical services and a lack of choice about what is available to you Government run healthcare is a disaster. Sadly, most people in Canada don't realize what a disaster it is because they have been fed a lie about how much better off they are than Americans that they actually believe this is good healthcare and Americans are suffering under a terrible system.  As someone who is extremely acquainted with both I have a unique perspective.  I'll take my Kaiser coverage all day and everyday over BC MSP.

In BC you can't be tested unless you exhibit symptoms as per BCCDC rules.

The boss here has two partners in her practice who came here from Canada and enjoying US Capitalism.

And that’s because it’s expense control by the Government. Bean counters controlling healthcare.

Bean counters controlling things. That's new isn't it ?. Normally commercial companies just let expenditure get out of control, don't they?, So why should health care be different.

With the lack of commmunication I see here in Canada between the Feds/Provinces I am honestly a bit concerned to the roll out. Supposedly the first doses are coming in January and the Provinces are seeking further information.  To me, it doesn't seem to be a good start .

I’ve always had good healthcare. Typically provided one’s employer. Now I have my VA Healthcare and Medicare and pay a supplement to increase the benefits.

I had cataract surgery in both eyes this year. My insurance paid the full going rate for the surgery, facility, and doctor. It would also pay for the standard lens. I choose to upgrade the lens to PanOptix Trifocal Lens. My personal choice and each lens cost me out of pocket $2500.

We have two Government systems here, Medicare and Medicaid  (VA as well with Choice). Medicare for those over 65 and/or those on Disibility and has paid into the system. Florida is not a true Medicaid State. Most Doctors in private practice don’t see Medicaid patients in office setting but are required to see them in a hospital setting if they have privileges  Depending on consulting contract with hospitals (privileges), they must see self pays (no insurance and probably no money) in hospital settings.

Each State can be a little different. Most liberal leaning States support and fund Medicaid but some like Florida do not.

There are some insurance providers that don’t “seem” to have the patients best interest in mind. Doctors have to jump through hoops to get permission to run needed tests.

This is not fact but posted with what little knowledge I have.

Commercial companies don’t last long if they continue to spend more than they receive. Government is a completely different animal.

Apparently, even though the CDC required states to submit their plans,  there's now talk about how they're going to do it.  I saw our incoming President talking about how to do it.  I'm like, hmmm, states already did that.

Expenditure needs to be controlled and budgets set in any organisation, public or private. You know that the government expenditure comes from you. I am sure you would like them to control it.
