And, up until last week, I was reading that breakthrough cases were no more than .9% among those who were vaccinated.

My wife caught it, and then gave it to me... both vaccinated.... 100% as far as my little world is concerned !

Tom

I'm glad you are both doing well.

For some vaccines at this point we should be expecting 30% breakthrough cases or more. We need to temper this mentality that being vaccinated is some perfect protection. Only 30% breakthrough is actually very good, btw.... some of the lower quality vaccines out there are under 20% effective at preventing mild cases.

Speak with you doctor! For high risk individuals there are doctors who are willing to provide boosters.

A little more reading revealed the answer to my question about third dose, I too have RA and I'm in a flare right now, a pretty bad one. I had my 2nd dose over 3 months ago, so I'm not sure if it's because of the vaccine. I will be asking about a booster as the delta variant has me a little worried.

I looked at these also, but the reviews were terrible, let me know how they fit.

Yes the Captain stated that masks are required indoors in entertainment venues and when entering and leaving dining areas  and I believe the casino.

tsj:  Hope you are enjoying your cruise despite the situation!  Would you be so kind as to be more specific as to exactly when/where masks are to be worn?  The new protocols have been debated on these boards since the news broke, and details would certainly help those of us who hold bookings in the coming weeks.  I'm only referring to WHILE ON BOARD - not while in port or embarkation/debarkation. For the entertainment venues (Liquid Lounge theater, Limelight Lounge comedy club, Ocean Plaza or Havana Bar while listening to a band, etc.), is it only while walking to your seat and then you can remove your mask once seated, even if not eating/drinking?  What about walking through the atrium areas?  Walking down the hallways? Are there "mask monitors" every few feet?  LOL! Seriously, some of us would like to hear from someone currently on board a Carnival ship, not those who are speculating as to how it will be.  Some have said "it's only walking a few feet into the MDR and in the Lido Buffet".  As for other posters, please do not quote the protocol wording back to me - I am well aware of it.  I am asking a legitimate question, and I think it would be helpful to hear from someone who is actually on a ship and can give an accurate account, seeing as how the previous CCL cruises have not had a mask requirement for all applicable passengers as we have now. OP - I thank you in advance for any information you can provide, and I wish you a blessed remainder of your cruise!

Are either of you worried that you will still test positive for the pre-cruise tests?  My understanding is even after you are recovered you can still test positive for a few months.

I think Carnival thought that if they had the 95% threshold they could let the rules slide with regards to the virus.  If it was the original virus that is probably true.   But as it mutates it becomes a more effective killer and the safeguards you thought were going to work before will not work in the future.  With this variant we are seeing that.

I think they previously thought that not as many vaccinated people would test positive.  Every unvaccinated person has to take the mandatory test on their way back to the home port. A positive test will trigger the entire vaccinated family to take the test.  As more vaccinated people test positive, it cuts into CDC's limit of keeping the infection rate under a percentage (which might be 1.5%).

It doesn't even matter if all of the positive cases have mild to no symptoms,  a large percentage of positive cases can result in the CDC shutting down cruising for another year.  That would be ridiculous, but that's the way the CDC rolls with cruise ships.  Thankfully, other forms of transportation aren't subject to the same rigid requirements or everything would be shut down.

I’m in love with my 3rd shot and we are 3 weeks into our honeymoon together. I had an RA flair with the first 2 shots but the 3rd one was smooth as silk. Maybe DH should arrange another consultation with his doctor or get a second opinion?

We need to get you into Witness Protection before the WHO finds out you got a 3rd shot 😉

Lol I heard the WHO says no booster shot, usa save to give it away to poor countries. My dad turns 103 in a few weeks, and the news has my mom thinking they shouldn't get a booster, even at their age. Its confusing for the elderly. Me and mom got ours in January so if it loses potency in 6 or 7 months.. that's us.

Boosters might be the next topic here. I hope carnival doesnt say boosters within a year or whenever. But I'm thinking ..

I’m not tsj, but I can tell you that there are signs where masks are required: dining room, marketplace (buffet), entertainment venues (lounges), casino, and elevators. It was not specifically stated for hallways, but most everyone is wearing them inside unless the are seated and eating/drinking. As I said In my original post, smoking has been delegated to the designated open decks outside. I hope that helps.E8D44572-F0CA-4395-BC87-56FE203A15D1.thumb.jpeg.5b8318c5e2de7c184d97d0a4d7393c89.jpeg

Not really, since we sail on 8/7 (mask start date fleetwide) and not the next Saturday 8/14 (covid test pre-cruise fleetwide).

It confuses them not because of CDC messaging, but because of the news sources who question things or makes big deals of small things

Thanks for posting this.  John Heald made it sound like you can just keep your mask in your pocket and you would only have to put it on during certain times.  He stated you do not have to walk around with your mask on in general around the ship. I don't really know what to expect.  I would rather just walk around with it off and then put it on when needed but I don't want to get dirty looks if people think I am breaking the rules by doing that.

I wonder if these positive cases are children and their parents.  Really, unvaccinated people should wait to cruise until next year.

It appears we are all will wait to cruise until 2025 or later. Seriously, one would think that life goes on, but not so fast. Lets’s remove 5-7 valuable years, who cares, right?

How would you see dirty looks? It’s not possible. You can only get dirty eyes. Silly World…

On my last cruise in July there were some very very elderly people on the ship. At first I was a bit surprised to see them going out and taking the risk.  And then I remembered, they have been isolated at home for the last 18 months during what may be some of their last years.  They are ready to live their life and enjoy what they have left.  For those thinking it's fine to just put life on hold for 3 years, please think of it from another perspective.

My opinion also. More power to those who are willing to put up with this, but I need more back to normal first.

I just saw the news of a downed sight-seeing plane in Alaska with Holland America passengers on board. No survivors.

I’m beginning to feel that this cruising season is snake bit.
