Cash Tipping

Um - plenty of places stopped taking cash during covid, thus the question.

That was when people thought it spread on surfaces. It doesn’t. Although I see lots of people talking about bringing Lysol wipes on the ship. So I guess wrong (outdated) information dies hard.

Completely understand.  Still some businesses are non-cash - at least where I live, thus the question.

Some of that is a staffing thing. Harder for employees to steal and/or screw up when you are electronic payment only. When there's limited staff availability, and you need to take what you can get, it's a consideration.

But I don't know any company that has tipped staff that could force their employees not to take cash tips.

We usually tip $1 on drinks.   I know we’ve paid it, but I don’t trust the cruise lines that the delightful people who serve us, chat with us, and provide us with a fair amount of entertainment value - that said, we have been blessed in our lives and those who serve us kindly are sacrificing a lot back home to support a family, so the small amount of my cash tips will hopefully provide some bit of comfort for them

In my 6 post-restart cruises on Royal, Princess, and Carnival, not a single bartender, bar waiter, MDR waiter, or room steward has refused a cash tip for fear of COVID.

Plenty of reasons to be non-cash but a lot of it came down the change shortage(s).

Yet to experience an onboard employee reject a cash tip.

I always take cash for drink tips because that goes right into their pocket.  I'm not sure how/when tips added to the receipt slip get distributed.

The tips added to the receipt are split among the servers and whoever.  When you give cash to the server, they pocket them.

I don’t want to sound ignorant so please excuse this somewhat non-drinker. When you purchase drinks isn’t there an automatic tip added to the bill? So if I tip them in cash, are they getting cash and gratuities that’s already added? I have no problem giving them more, especially my room stewards who go over the top -  just curious about gratuities that are already added to drink orders. I’ve actually never drank on any of our cruises and I am planning on buying the drink of the day this time if there are good ones. Will those have a gratuity already added to them?

most of the people tipping on drinks have the drink package. They pre-pay tips when they purchase the package but still like tipping in cash also. If you purchase a drink your tip is already going to the bartender. No reason to tip extra.

cruise ship employees will still accept cash. There’s no easy system for you to tip extra otherwise.

Not everyone will carry cash.

We always carry dollar bills on a cruise, mainly to tip bar waiters in the casino. We almost always have free drinks there, we sign the ticket though it's zero, but I've never known if the waiters earn any tip on them like they do on regular drinks.

They get about 75 cents per drink

Is tipping is cash still a thing on cruise ships in this era of COVID restrictions?

Yes.  No reason why it wouldn't be and now more than ever the workers really appreciate it.

... and now more than ever they DESERVE it!
