Refurbishment Schedule???

Recommended Posts

Wondering if anyone has insight to a reliable source on what Royal is planning for updates to some of the older ships.
Although they have released some wonderful ships recently, many ships in the fleet are getting old and showing their age.  Radiance, Voyager and Freedom ships could use some updates.

Not taking major make overs like what they did with Oasis (but that was awesome), but more along refurbishment of cabins and interior spaces and perhaps changing some venues.

Thanks in advance for any inputs.

Given the recent dry docks, don't expect anything more than routine maintenance for years to come on older ships.

Some ships were upgraded before Covid.  The Adventure, Indy, Oasis, all have I am sure.  I believe the Serenade of the Seas was in dry dock for 2 or 3 weeks in April but nobody seems to know what work was done.

We just got off the Explorer and it has had sone things upgraded and was in decent shape  but needs to major upgrade.  It did appear to have new carpet, new modern elevator touch controls and the cabins were in great shape but the WiFi was awful and it needs more dining options in my opinion.

Indy needs something... again! Furniture all over the place is falling apart. Not just a piece here and there, but an overwhelming majority of chairs in the Windjammer, Casino, and many chairs and tables on the pool deck. I think it looks really trash in the Windjammer with all the rips in most of the chairs. I still love the Indy, but these items need addressed.

rhapsody really needs a face lift

I guess the remaining Vision Class ships will not get any refurbishment done anymore and will eventually leave the fleet within the next 2-3 years.

For Radiance, Voyager and Freedom Class and eventually Oasis and Allure it would be time to fully upgrade the cabins including new bathrooms, not something RCL has been strong about even before the pandemic. Depedning on whatever upgrades will be done, nothing major to be expected before the financial situation will not stabilize, hence I gues before 2024 we will not see any major refurbishments on existing ships both at RCL and X.

They can update bathrooms that have curtains in them.

The "M" class ships on Celebrity had shower curtains and they upgraded them.  They striped the entire room down and changed them, they now have glass shower doors, so it is possible, especially if they want to maintain them for smaller ports.  Added new closets and electrical outlets to include USB ports.

I don't think it will be done until they are in really the black, maybe in a year or two to get them done, but it's possible to upgrade them on older ships.  As someone noted, the Explorer has gotten upgrades to the Windjammer, the Solarium, new beds.  I don't know how they can update those shower capsules, but I am sure they are working on it, 😐

I thought the Explorer shower tubes were fine and in fact the interiors of the cabins were great. The new beds were very comfortable.    Actually better than the Symphony we were on in Nov.  My biggest issue was the WiFi was awful, and the ship badly needs to add a park cafe or another free quick dinning option.  a few areas could use paint but the Windjammer furniture was perfect.  They should buy it for the Indy.

Freedom was completely refurbished in 2020. She had only one cruise before covid hit and shut everything down

This is my 5th time on Freedom in the last 6 months and I don’t have one negative thing to say about Freedom.

makes sense.... will they rid serenade.. i hope not i like that ship

Serenade is scheduled for a World Cruise(274 Nights) from December  2023 to September 2024.  Pretty sure the passengers on that sailing are hoping the ship isn't sold during that time.

This is your captain. The ship has been sold, so we are going to go ahead and beach it here at this scrapyard. Thanks for sailing Royal Caribbean!

Just mechanical stuff on Serenade

The World Cruisers are speculating on a refurbishment in Fall 2023 prior to her sailaway in December. There seems to be an open block of time after her European Summer season ends in October

We are booked for Serenade April 29, 2023. You can't find the booking on line any more, in the cruise planner it had Dry Dock.  I call about it and they told me to wait and see, no one knows anything. It's been like this for 3 weeks now. I wish they would tell me so I can find another cruise.

It's fine, it's somewhat smaller than the new ships sailing, which is why I said the capsule doors could use an upgrade.  The best place to get wifi on the ship will be the Solarium and the Windjammer in my opinion, unless the rooms have routers in them just as the Odyssey, which I had no problems with.  The ship will not have 5G, so your expectations may vary on the weather and how many are on the system at any given time.

I believe the Serenade will go into a complete dry dock after the October 13th Cruise in Spain (on or a day after October 21st) before it goes on their World Cruise in December, from what I read.
