migdet71 Posted March 23, 2023 #1 Share Posted March 23, 2023 First time Celebrity cruisers, and we're wondering if the "Chic" attire applies to the entire ship or just MDR/specialty dining and shows. We don't eat in the MDR, so on "Chic" nights are we going to get the stink eye for wandering the ship in nice shorts, sandals and camp shirts? I've scoured the web site and it's not really clear on the subject. Thanks in advance
Notalotofinfo Posted March 23, 2023 #2 Share Posted March 23, 2023 There really isn’t anyone with an opinion about this! 1
Rare bjahil47 Posted March 23, 2023 #3 Share Posted March 23, 2023 No idea but after dinner and the show, we put on more comfy clothes and walk around. The chic nite is not for buffet area.
Rare kk20 Posted March 23, 2023 #4 Share Posted March 23, 2023 We often change out of our ‘chic’ attire as soon as we’re done in the mdr and have never noticed anyone giving us the ole stink eye afterwards

And guests are asked to follow the Smart Casual or Evening Chic dress code in the Celebrity Theater for all evening performances." My experience, they'll be zero dress code enforcement other than the restaurants. On all my sailings, I always see dress code violations during dinner so enforcement hasn't been very strict. zitsky Posted March 23, 2023 #6 Share Posted March 23, 2023 Walking around or eating at a restaurant? I can stand around and judge you but you have to pay my cruise fare. 1

There is more judgment passed on Cruise Critic than on board. If someone in something less than "evening chic" is in the dining room best to ignore their appearance and not let it ruin your cruise. 2023 is casual to very casual. Like it or not it is reality today. PS nobody ever cared - even in the 1990s - what someone wore outside the dining rooms.

Years ago, people "dressed up" for dinner and the theatre. Now you see everything everywhere all evening. There will always be people who judge, and there will always be people in the theatre in shorts.
RichYak Posted March 23, 2023 #9 Share Posted March 23, 2023 I think you should walk by the MDR in your shorts and give the stink eye to everyone that’s been sitting in there for 90+ minutes, all dressed up, still waiting for dessert, and wondering where the sommelier went. That’s just me though. 5 1

Ocdublin Posted March 23, 2023 #11 Share Posted March 23, 2023 The key word is chic attire! If you people watch like we do chic attire is open for interpretations! We always walk around in our casual clothes and have never issue. Enjoy your cruise!

Thanks for sharing this. 40 years ago men were chastised for wearing a sports coat on formal night. 20 years ago for not wearing a only a dress shirt - no coat or tie. Today on our last cruise the MDR had lots of sweatshirts and jeans on Chic night. Simply the facts. 1

We often say we wished we’d discovered cruising earlier but one of the things that put us off was having to dress formally. So glad the rules have been relaxed and the new rules accommodate those of us who want to be smart casual. Wouldn’t want them relaxing further other than men should be equal to women and be allowed to wear tailored shorts in MDR of an evening.

Rare terrydtx Posted March 23, 2023 #16 Share Posted March 23, 2023 (edited) Oh wonderful another of the never-ending dress code threads, I am getting my bucket of popcorn and watching it play out. 🤣 Edited March 23, 2023 by terrydtx 2
migdet71 Posted March 23, 2023 Author #17 Share Posted March 23, 2023 Thanks for the answers. I understand what the docs say (even though that's a bit vague, INHO), my question was more to the level of adherence As I said, we are not MDR or show people, so I just wanted some assurance that we'd not be confronted on Chic night on our way to casino by a throng of shocked pearl clutchers. Really didn't intend this to be a spectacle thread. I would have asked about smoking areas if that was my intent. Again, thanks. Sounds like we'll be OK.
MissP22 Posted April 15, 2023 #18 Share Posted April 15, 2023 We haven't been on Celebrity in many years so I can't comment about dressing. I do see that things are very similar to Princess in many respects and dressing is pretty much left up to the individual to decide.
m8zenblue Posted April 15, 2023 #19 Share Posted April 15, 2023 (edited) IMO, I have been on many X cruises. Dress code is NOT enforced, at all. We have seen folks in MDR wearing shorts, flip flops, tank tops, etc, staff did nothing. I think staff is afraid to confront people who break rules, seen it many times over and over. Actually, in the 1990's my son was refused entry into the main theater during the Captain's toast on chic night (then formal night) because he had changed his shoes into athletic shoes rather than dress shoes. Hard to believe but true! Celebrity has come a long way since then (and I am one who thinks for the worse vis a vis dressing, but not going to get into it any further on these boards!)
Rare DaKahuna Posted April 15, 2023 #22 Share Posted April 15, 2023 Prior to COVID I saw a passenger refused entry into the MDR for dinner because he was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. This was not on formal night either. Have only sailed in suites since the restart and have not really paid attention. The only reason I remember that one instance is because he became very loud and vocal with the maitre'd.

You mean like allowing tennis shoes? Or do you mean they should allow it?
