Dining Room Song and Dance

I hate it. It disrupts the meal and it is so loud you can no longer converse with your tablemates. The waiters that I have asked about it, hate it also. They do it because they have to and they smile while doing it because that's what is expected of them. Have you ever had a waiter come back to your table all giddy and smiling saying "gee, that was fun, I can't wait to do it again"? No, they come back acting professional and pick up where they left off.

Not if you want your dessert and they haven't served it to you yet.

You can take your dessert with you.  It only happens once in 7 nights. And I haven't found that to be true at all.  All the servers I interact with seem to enjoy it immensely.  If people hate it so much they can always find out which night it is planned and go to Windjammer...I don't let things like that bother me.

Agreed. They certainly aren't going to let people know that they don't like it. They are going to pretend to like it even if they don't.

At least 2 nights on a 7 day cruise from my experience and the person who is currently on a ship. I simply asked the question, so I could attempt to help my kid prepare/avoid it. I do realize it is not fine dining but it is a multi-course dinner in a nice setting. I do wish the MDR had remained a more upscale experience. It still isn't going to have a big impact on our life and I would hope it doesn't for anyone else.

I really wasn't expecting this to be a new topic to go off about but I guess we were due for something to strike a nerve.

The staff that I really feel sorry for are those poor servers in Johnny Rockets who have to stop and do a silly routine from time-to-time.  They always look like they would rather be ANYwhere else.

Of course my kid has had to learn a lot of coping mechanisms to avoid the stares and comments when the tourettes flairs and the spastic tics begin. Ships have plenty to do and spaces to escape. It is actually a great vacation, as you can really customize it to what works for you.

My daughter, now almost 15, had these same symptoms show up in November of 2020. It started out with her saying the word "honk" quite often while in conversation and although we would all just laugh it off she would get annoyed at the fact that she could not stop it. Then she started with the head tics where her head would jerk back every so often. Then the anxiety started. She would not want to leave the house. In the store she would sometimes go hide because there were too many people for her to cope. Then she would stim and flap her hands when she was anxious or overwhelmed. I found something that helped and now she no longer needs it. She has never seen a doctor for it and is completely over all of her symptoms.

This is called Brillia. I ordered it directly from their online site. The effects are not instant as it has to build up in the system but I am so thankful that I found it because now she lives a very "normal" life. She makes friends instantly on every cruise as soon as she gets in the teen club.

I wish you the best and if you are hesitant maybe somebody else may want to try it. My husband's brother is taking it for anxiety and it is helping him, too.

I actually like it, I’m on a cruise and on holiday so I don’t necessarily want dinner to be like an experience I would have at a restaurant at home.

I could understand this in comparison with the UK. Unfortunately many of the restaurants where I am have this sort of thing and I enjoyed how calm and quiet dining at restaurants was while we were in England. I think many of us just want a different experience than what we typically get back home.

Tourettes is generally outgrown or gets worse.  My daughter's symptoms now are basically gone. The worst was when she was much younger. I will follow what her specialists have told us, as she is far more complicated than "just" Tourettes.

Same with my daughter, much more than just Tourettes,  she would have become a hermit had we not found this, as she would not leave the house. Every day was a battle to get her out of bed.

Good luck with your daughter, we chose to not go the medical route because we feel they are poison and everything has a side effect. We are just happy that she is back to her normal and living life well.

I find most of the times it’s the assistant waiters that are involved.Royal had stopped it some time ago and brought it back.  I truly enjoyed the flaming baked Alaska and staff dancing and singing and entertaining passengers. Alas, due to insurance situation that has since gone by the way of the Dodo bird. Miss those olden days of sailing.
