Question - Swapping rooms with someone

Recommended Posts

Hello,

We are booked for a cruise this summer via a land based casino offer. The offer was "free for player plus guest" so my husband is in my moms room and I'm in my aunts room. We technically only had to pay for taxes and fees, but the cruise rate came out to $100 which they're crediting as OBC to make it "free." My mom and aunt don't drink but my husband and I do drink, so we want to get the Cheers package. Since anyone over 21 in the stateroom must get the drink package if other people are getting it, I'm thinking of switching with my mom once on board (actually switching rooms, not just getting an extra keycard).

My questions are:

  1. Has anyone done this before?
  2. Will we have any issues doing a real room switch with guest names and everything, not just getting an extra keycard for the rooms?
  3. Will we lose the $100 OBC if we switch after we are on board?

Thanks for reading!

If you switch rooms, then the second room would no longer be eligible for the casino rate would it? What is cheaper - Cheers or paying brochure rate for the room?

Even if we waited until we got onboard to make the switch?

Yes.  They know this game. You can get extra room only keys but you booked casino offers

Ok that makes sense. Thanks for the reply!

You can get extra cabin keycards made on board. Just do that and then sleep in whichever cabin you want to. Carnival doesn't care where you sleep.

Do you just go to guest services and ask for an extra card to be printed. Do they ever ask why?

I doubt they would, many families do this when the need to book multiple cabins.

I just did this last February on the Carnival Splendor. My niece and her parents were in a room and I was solo. I was told also they don't care where you sleep.  I just asked for another room key without making any changes to booking on board (no questions are asked). She stayed on the account of her parents room but slept in my cabin. No issues at all. We had the cabins linked so when dining all 4 of us were together and cabin did not matter

Thanks everyone! I understand that I can just get an extra key and that Carnival doesn't care who sleeps in which cabin. I was specifically asking about doing a true room switch so that we don't have to buy the Cheers package for both rooms since only my husband and I want it. My mom and aunt don't drink so they don't need the cheers package, hence the question about doing a true room switch (not just extra keys).

I don’t think you can do that.

That "switch" would mean the casino player (you) was not in the room booked under the offer.   If you can't switch people before boarding without lost of perks, you can't do it after  boarding.

You just need both parties present to ask for the extra room cards so you aren't stalking someone

Yeah you can't actually change who is in a room once you're onboard, as far as I am aware. You can only do that beforehand and since presumably you and your spouse are the ones with the casino offers, that would leave the other room paying brochure rate.

I would just try to qualify for free drinks while playing in the casino at least. And maybe in future cruises you'll get offers for Drinks on Us Everywhere, which is essentially Cheers but paid for by the Casino.

So nobody that has the casino offer has to be booked in the cabin? That doesn’t right.

If you'll all be together most of the cruise, why not have your husband and mom get the Cheers package and then just have your mom get your drinks for you?

Based on the info OP provided, there is no way for her and husband to cruise for free and to have Cheers without all four paying for Cheers.

Mom and aunt are the ones with free cruise offers. They have to book in their own cabins so there are a third and fourth lower bed available for OP and husband.  They can get "key only" S&S cards made so people can sleep in a different cabin than assigned; Carnival doesn't care who sleeps where.

But Carnival will not (either before or during the cruise) reassign mom and aunt together and put OP and husband in the same cabin, because no one who would be in that cabin had the casino offer.  Plus Carnival knows about the "moving people around" trick to not have to buy Cheers for everyone. Sometimes it works but not in this case when mom and aunt are the only ones with the casino offer.

There is only one circumstance in which this would work.  If mom and aunt had Drinks On Us Everywhere (not just in the casino), Carnival will let just their roommates buy Cheers because mom and aunt essentially already have Cheers, just paid for by casino.  But this can only be done onboard (not with the Cheers prepaid discount) because a bar manager has to override the transaction to sell Cheers to just one person in the cabin.

We did what DallasGuy mentioned in his last comment.  Both me and my husband had casino offers with reduced rate, free play and drinks on us everywhere. Same offer code.  We went with another couple.  We booked 2 rooms under the same casino offer with me and friend in one room and my husband and friend in another.  The couple was able to purchase cheers separately since the other "official roommate" had drinks everywhere.  As mentioned, they had to wait until on board to purchase so had to pay higher price.  However.... we were just going to do the key switch, but the guest services asked if we wanted accounts switched and new keys... so they did it, but I agree it might be all the time.  And in this scenario there is no free drinks everywhere on the offer so I'm guessing it will not work for buying cheers as mentioned.

I have done this multiple times.  Twice they gave us new sail and sign cards and switched our rooms.  Once we just got the extra key card.  If you are purchasing cheers for one person then you will need to do the extra room key card.  2 people in your group will carry around 2 cards.

If they gave you new cards and switched your rooms wouldn't they reprice your rates?

They did not reprice the room.  I just did this on the Vista in October.  They printed a new sail and sign card for my mother and I.

Were your rooms booked under 2 separate casino offers?

Yes.  My wife and I both had casino offers.  We wanted to give my Mom and stepdad a free cruise so we booked my Wife and Mom in one room and my step dad and me in the other.  When we boarded the ship my mother and I went to guest services and they moved us and issued new sail and sign cards.
