Ocean Cay reopening?

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to update everyone that Ocean Cay is indeed open and other than some minor buildings under construction, there is no other evidence anything was happening…

unfortunately my visit was cut short as I was stung by a jellyfish in the lagoon. They were able to treat it on the island within 30 minutes to halt any further inflammation, but the damage was done in terms of being able to relax on the island.

Oh no! I am so sorry!

It’s ok. Thank you for the empathy. I would just say, if this happens to anyone, please don’t hesitate to find a staff member and tell them right away. They seemed very prepared to treat it on the spot and it will make your day so much better to get it dealt with. I extend great kudos to them for their readiness.

March to August is sea lice/ jellyfish season.

May to October is seaweed season

February March and August September is red tide season.

So it appears the best time to swim in the Ocean is November, December and January.

So other than the YC Ocean House what else did they do to the island?

According to Thomas Muldoon, Business Development Manager Central /North Florida Ocean Cay is supposed to have created a 2nd buffet area as the present one is not large enough to handle all that visit the island. Also a lagoon area is supposed to have been developed for families.

Sorry that you were stung. We were just there last week and started at the lagoon, but heard about the jelly fish. Hubby wanted to go in anyway, but I said no because the water was a little cloudy and we may not see a jelly fish until it was too late. We ended up swimming in the beautiful crystal clear water at Lighthouse Beach. No jelly fish there. Next time I want to check out Bimini Beach. I hope that you are enjoying your cruise. I tried to log on to cruise critic while we were in Florida to let you know what a great time we were having since I knew you were concerned , but was having trouble logging in on my phone. Hope that you are enjoying your trip.

Courtesy of M. Curran on FB for posting these changes added to Ocean House. Furniture must still be on order? Looks more like a dance floor presently.

I am glad to hear that it was taken care of right away.  Hopefully they used something other than the method we used when I was a kid vacationing in Florida and someone got stung 🤣

But according to multiple posts, they did not add a buffet area, correct?

When I asked, last week, they said there was just one buffet on the island.

I just left Tuesday and there is no second buffet.  We actually noticed no difference.  I guess the YC area had some upgrades and there is a new cove that is still under construction along with more crew housing.

Here is the new map from our daily planner.  We really didn't notice anything 'revamped' in family cove and Sneakers Cove still isn't open.

I've seen this recommendation many times on this board and people really seem to like it. I really can't see myself enjoying it. To me it seems like an odd combination. Am I the only one?

No.  That would not appeal to me, at all.  Then again, I wouldn’t eat the lobster roll, either. 🙈

Seating isn’t sparse like that at all.

That is what I am discovering as well. We hope to be on board in two weeks and will check this out if we get to dock. We like to return to the ship for lunch in air conditioned splendor, than fight for one of the three tables inside Ocean House. Summer months are just too hot for us nowadays.

I'm so glad to read on here that people have been to the re-opened Ocean Cay.  Our wedding is on OC on June 18th.  The wedding pavilion was already so beautiful.  When we were there in December the on-island wedding coordinator said they weren't doing anything but sprucing it up a bit.

I thought they already had a second buffet building that has been unused so far.  It's located about 400 feet due West of the current buffet area and was originally part of the central construction area.

Note: the ship’s dock at the Southern end of the island so the usual maps are rotated about 90 degrees from North.

Hope the trip was really great overall. I know you had concerns - maybe none of them were warranted!

Excellent thank you. The ship is very amazing. It was PACKED, it felt like a Christmas cruise but double. Generally patrons were well-behaved, the horizons nightclub did degenerate into a bunch of F bomb and P word music that many of the ladies would sing to, but I could live with it.

There was also this new kind of dancing to the explicit music that some of the ladies got up to which I was quite shocked to see. they would all do the “twerk” move, but they did it with their behinds and private areas to each other in groups, it was really quite shocking, I’ve never seen anything quite like it on other ships! I’m glad the late night club is 18+ lol 😂

Whoa! Haven't seen that before, but I am glad you had a good cruise! To be fair, though, I rarely stay out past 12:30 or 1:00 on a cruise and often, when I do, it's in the casino.
