Thursday May 30th ... La Romana, DR:

After a record setting amount of sleep (over 13 hours, a new personal best) I got up to begin my day. Almost immediately after I arose, the power went out on the ship. I mean it was pitch dark in my room, so I opened up the door to the hallway and the only light out there was the emergency backup lights. This lasted around ten minutes or so, and then they came back on. A few minutes later everything went out again for another ten or fifteen minutes. The Captain came on the speaker and announced some kind of electrical issue, and they were working on it. Here we are thousands of miles from home and everything goes out. I was hoping we wouldn't end up stuck out there in limbo with no power or air conditioning, but fortunately that ended up being the worst of it.

I got dressed and went down to Ocean Plaza for my large black Americano. This morning I decided to try something different for breakfast so I grabbed a bowl from the buffet and took it over to Blue Iguana for a "breakfast burrito bowl"... Unfortunately almost everything in there was cold or tepid at best, but I ate most of it anyway... Unsatisfied, I went over to the omelette line and got a couple of real fried eggs.

**"One other thing I should mention about the power outage, was that people were stuck in the elevators and had to be rescued. Also, the elevators themselves didn't work at all for a good while afterwards, and people were mad because they were forced to take the stairs. Let's just say that there were plenty of people on this cruise who could've stood to take the stairs on a more frequent basis...

Anyhoo, I had already decided to take La Romana as a sea day, and enjoy the mostly empty ship. While I was wandering on deck 5 I came across my very first duck. A few minutes later another. And pretty soon after that even another one... I decided to do some more searching since I was on a hot streak, but only ended up finding one more, for 4 total. Went and dropped those off at the cabin while I went out and took some pictures of the mostly empty ship...

Okay, I'm going to hit the pause button and we'll continue with La Romana day / staying on board day tomorrow... Thanks to all of you who've made it this far. I know this isn't nearly as exciting as the real "Live Review" but it's something... See y'all soon...

And a few more...

The carpet in Reflections looks very much like the artwork you painted in your bathroom!

I think I can say without a doubt we’ll, the Tribe and many others here, will take a Sid review anyway we can get it.  We just want you to enjoy your cruise.

When I was making dinner tonight I noticed that I couldn't really smell that well, even though I was cooking with fresh chopped garlic and drinking red wine... I decided to burn through one of my last remaining corona virus tests, but it ended up negative... I guess that it's just lingering effects of the cruise crud, but it's also strange to lose my taste and smell... Possibly a "new variant" not perceptible by an older corona virus test?...

@sid_9169 quick question, if you had to choose between Jiji Asian and Steakhouse on Horizon (doesn’t look like you ate at Steakhouse on this trip but you have eaten at several on other Carnival ships) what would you choose?
Anyone else want to chime in?

I did eat at the steakhouse (coming up) and Jiji Asian twice... I would do Jiji Asian easily over the steakhouse anytime...

Way back when I finally got Covid I took 2 home tests, negative. Went to Walgreens same day, positive. Husband already had it so was pretty sure I had it. Also that was when we got 10 paid days off from work and only had very mild symptoms for two days. Sounds like you have all the classic symptoms, hope it doesn't last long☹️

@sid_9169 I’m enjoying your review and glad that you got to have a real vacation instead of keeping us in the loop every moment of your vacation.

It’s unusual for you to stay in the ship, I hope you had a great day.

It took my husband 4 days and 4 tests to test positive but we knew he had it based on symptoms which included no taste or smell.  Whatever it is I hope you get better quickly.

Just play a few tunes from 1989's Disintregation and you'll be fine...

Yeah I took a test the first day I got sick and it was negative but when the fever kicked in the next day it was VERY positive, like as the liquid seeped up the line appeared bright and instantly, well before the control line appeared. No waiting 15 minutes.

I do a really thorough swabbing job which they claim can help get better results.

My doctor informed me that Purell & other antibacterials are ineffective against viruses. Cruise crud, norovirus & covid all all viruses. The FDA actually went after the makers of Purell for  making unfounded claims that its products prevent and help stop virus spread.

That might be - but we have never gotten sick after a cruise while sanitizing our hands.   We have seen people cough or sneeze into their hands and then touch stuff - buffet spoons, elevator buttons, door handles, railings, menus, casino slot buttons.  Can't hurt to use hand sanitizer - even if it is for our own mental well-being.  But you do you 🙂

Getting ready now for this one final work day before the weekend... I don't feel bad this morning, but still don't have much taste or smell. I'll continue with La Romana day when I get a chance...

Alright, let's see if I can finish off La Romana day / stay on board day. I took a few pictures in the casino while it was closed. They even have these machines where you can bet on sporting events. Carnival will stop at nothing to separate you from your gambling dollars...

We had a later than usual arrival to port today, I think around 11:30. Looks like a pretty industrial type area, and most of the excursions here require a pretty long drive.
