newfietravel Posted June 18 #1 Share Posted June 18 I know I could bring a bottle of wine on board. It states, however, on their site that I have to pay a corkage fee. I have no intentions of bringing it into the dining room, and it will be a screw cap. Do I still have to pay the $20 fee? Thanks

Thanks Technically, yes. However, others have reported that they weren’t charged corkage so it seems to be intermittently enforced.
cccole Posted June 18 #3 Share Posted June 18 For us it has depended on the port whether they pay attention to alcohol in your carry on or luggage. But it wouldn't be a big deal to me to pay HAL $20 to have a nice bottle wine in the cabin or dining room. Unless you get the 4 or 5 * mariner discount, why not bring on your own wine? And, you bring on more than one bottle. JMO. Cherie
cruiser man 60 Posted June 19 #4 Share Posted June 19 Hasn’t this question been asked dozens of times, same on Facebook!, yes you pay no matter where you drink it, even your bathroom!!! 3
Sea42 Posted June 19 #5 Share Posted June 19 3* mariners receive a 25% discount on the Sommelier Suite wine package and 4 & 5 * receive a 50% discount. For us, that makes bringing on our own everyday type wine less attractive.

Not worth hauling bottles of wine to the ship with the discount on the Sommelier packages. Enjoy the wine onboard......

badtwin Posted June 19 #8 Share Posted June 19 And honestly the search function on cruise critic can be less than ideal. I have tried to search for threads I know were recently used and been unable to find them. 3

Thanks Brought two bottles on board Rotterdam in April. The one in my carry-on bag was found during the security screening and we paid the $20. The other was in our checked bag and made it through without detection-no corkage fee,

It was all because of packing logistics. I fully expected to pay corkage fee on both. Sorry if you are offended.

I have never heard that before. Please post HAL policy that says that. (I am not doubting you, just this is the first I heard someone say that.) dockman Posted June 20 #17 Share Posted June 20 with the cruise lines all pushing the drink packages more than ever i would suspect that very few of the drink package bunch would even bother to bring booze in checked luggage ....maybe a few special bottles that they are willing to pay corkage......but geez if you have the package it seems that just maybe u would be allowed to bring a couple of your own special wines without extra charge? bean counter heaven...get pax to buy expensive drink package and then they bring their own booze to drink rather than the included package drinks?? Navylab Posted August 10 #22 Share Posted August 10 Last year I brought 10 bottles of high end Spanish wine that I purchased in Barcelona (for our Princess cruise) and throughout our cruise purchased other bottles of wine in various ports and our MDR waiter charged us the corkage fee when we brought a bottle to dinner. We never paid corkage on the wine we drank on our balcony. Will it work the same for our 28 day cruise on HA from Athens?

Many European ports have duty free including reasonably priced wine after security. Athens is one of them, but I was required in 2019 by port security to turn in a bottle of beer to my (Princess) ship for return on disembarkation eve. So YMMV when it comes to Athens. Or really, any port. You never know. Last time we were in Naples, for the first time the port's X ray machines weren't turned on and we were cleared on board. Saw a lot of wine at the naughty table that day!
cccole Posted August 10 #24 Share Posted August 10 If I were planning to bring alcohol on board a ship I do not think I would alert HAL to my plans. So many great posts on this thread that it really depends on the port. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. We enjoyed a "who cares attitude" to a "corkage fee". Since we had HIA we really didn't care if HAL kept a bottle or two until we left the ship. It was fun buying wines in port. JMO. Cherie
asebastian Posted August 10 #25 Share Posted August 10 During our recent Viking Passage trip, several people bought six-packs of the Arctic Beer (blue cans) at various ports and brought them into the ship without any issues. I had a few cans in my backpack that went thru the scanner as well.
