What Cruise lines don't have gambling? We are thinking about doing a cruise, but I want one without a casino.

Hello,

I believe American  Cruise Line, Disney, Lindblad, and Windstar don't have gambling.   

 

Right now I am looking at maybe American Cruise line for me and DH (64 and 71), but are there other lines to look at too?  I live in the middle of the USA are we are looking at cruises that wouldn't be to far away or too big a time change to get to.  We would prefer a cruise close to a week in length and would like to get a balcony.  We're not looking for a luxury cruise per say, but for example for the 2026 cruises we are looking at on American Cruise line they run between 7K and 8K a person for that (small ship and American crew, etc.)  We don't FYI want to go higher than that price point.

Viking does not have casinos.

NCL's Pride of America in Hawaii doesn't have a casino.

 

Cruise ships with casinos may actually be a bit cheaper.

Viking and Disney, quickly come to mind.  7-8 K a person, for a 7 day cruise, opens up just about any option.  You can cruise for a lot less, if you simply stick to a basic balcony cabin.

We also have no interest in donating money to the cruise line, so for us the benefit of not having a casino is it permits additional space for things we do like. Also don't like walking through them with the constant noise and lights.

 

Viking is a great example, as with no casino they have more quiet lounges with books throughout the ship.

Not of interest to me so we don't want this either.  Would I sail on a ship with a Casino?  Would not be my first choice.  This means that valuable real estate of the ship is being taken up by something that we don't use.  I would rather there be more specialty restaurants or other amenities.

DH likes gambling and I want him to stay away from that on any vacation he goes on with me.  I don't gamble.  He'd like to do a cruise vacation again with me, but knows that I absolutely refuse to go with him on any ship with a casino (I don't see him enough - he spends too much time there - I won't make that mistake again ever), so that leaves a cruise without a casino or no cruise if he is vacationing with me.

 

We mostly do land vacations to the Western USA, national parks, things like that on vacation.  He'd like to mix it up and try another cruise and would be cool with the ship not having a casino (knows that's the only option I would do) and I told him I would research options (I'm the main family vacation planner as I enjoy things like that).

I once had a week in Las Vegas and never gambled. Not even on a slot machine. Personal choice. Never even been in a casino on a cruise ship and have no desire to do so.

Experienced players don't take cruise ship casinos all that seriously. Too many rookies on both sides of the table. The casino does however offer an entertainment alternative to the dreariness of a sea day.

That's if you find throwing your money away to be entertaining.

Give me a sea day with a good book and watching the ocean go by to give me pleasure.

The casinos are a significant profit center for the cruise lines.  Typically those without one are measurably more expensive as the base cruise fares and other on board revenue streams are more costly to offset that.  Comparatively with mass market cruise lines that is the case with Disney.

 

We aren't gamblers either but it doesn't matter to us if a cruise line has a casino as we just don't go to that venue.  It's not a reason for us not to book that cruise line, especially if doing so results in more premium pricing. 

 

There are other venues and activities (and associated revenue streams) we avoid as well, such as the spa and the art auctions. But knowing they are on board a ship wouldn't sway our booking decision.   JMO.

More entertaining than "throwing my money away" being massaged, bidding on second-rate art, drinking your face off or any of the myriad ways cruise lines get your money. And if the cards are in your favor and you know how to play you might even come out ahead.

You make it sound like he has a gambling problem.  If that is the case, I believe most ships with casinos have Gamblers Anonymous meetings.  Give DH another chance, but if has a problem, insist he attend those meetings ( and you should go with him for support).  He will meet like minded people and they will help each other stay away and keep peace in the families.

Finding a cruise without a casino won't be a problem; your problem will be finding one with only American crew.

Most cruise ships I have been on have the casino as a critical pass through to get to many public areas. But the current ship I'm on (Royal's Ovation) has the casino on deck 3, while most public areas are on decks 4 and 5. It might be a consideration for both those with casino problems and those with problems with casinos.
