Cruisin2Sun Posted September 16, 2009 #201 Share Posted September 16, 2009 What a fantastic thread. I can't wait til the next cruise! I enjoyed the sailaway from Tampa, because we sailed right past many waterfront homes, just beautiful homes. Several people were in their back yards, waving. I just thought, "wow, what a great view THEY have." Also love the darkness of the sky and sea at night, and then seeing another lighted ship passing in the distance. We too, have seen a rickety boat filled with Haitians, following the ship. I was concerned about the condition of the boat and the number of people crowded into it. Everyone on the Lido deck was hanging over the deck watching. They finally faded away from the ship. And on the Valor, while at sea, we saw a seagull hiding in a corner on the Lido Deck. And this past June on the RC Liberty of the Seas, we were able to go right on the heliport and go all the way to the bow of the ship. You see nothing but water. It was awesome. Sigh....this thread is killing me!!
jennbill Posted September 16, 2009 Author #202 Share Posted September 16, 2009 Wow, forgot I started this one. Let's add a couple more. Not spectacular but fun. Sail aways from Ft. Lauderdale and San Diego. Ft. Lauderdale was fun with all those folks in the condos on portside blowing their horns and shouting. San Diego is simply an amazing sailout. From an aft cabin watching the skyline fade away, gliding around all of the U.S. Navy activity on Coronado Island, the seals on the buoys, the Point Loma lighthouse. Just tremendous. gusandgidgetsmom Posted September 16, 2009 #204 Share Posted September 16, 2009 Double water spouts. My son and I were both on our balconies and saw them. We both did double takes. Think we were on our way to Belize.
Shipshape7 Posted September 16, 2009 #205 Share Posted September 16, 2009 What's the coolest, most memorable thing you've seen while at sea? Very Best: Mt. Kilauea eruption lava flows at night off the Big Island in Hawaii. Second Best: An amazing heat lightening storm (no rain, just huge bolts). It was late at night and DH and I had the very tip of the bow (Titanic "King of the World" spot) all to ourselves. Third Best: The Na Pali Coast of Kawaii. sdaniel105 Posted September 16, 2009 #209 Share Posted September 16, 2009 My wife and I were sitting on the aft having lunch one day at sea and I spotted a couple whales. I guess I would have expected it on an Alaskan cruise, but was surprised by it on this trip. Sean
morganboys Posted September 16, 2009 #210 Share Posted September 16, 2009 we were docked in nassau for the night on the sensation and were docked across form the fascination. After dinner we were standing out on the lido deck. Across the way on the fascination we saw a lady come out of the bathroom buck naked. just seconds in the very next cabin another lady come out of the bathroom buck naked and following her out was a man buck naked as well. We all got a pretty good laugh. Tip of advice though. when you are in port docked next to another ship remember to clothes your curtains.
dotshub Posted September 16, 2009 #211 Share Posted September 16, 2009 Two things stand out for me- First time coming into St Thomas early in the morning, it was the first time we had ever seen the islands and it was just sooo beautiful! On our first southern cruise, we sailed past the island of Montserrat. It was some time after the volcano erupted and even tho it was in the distance quite a way, we could clearly see what looked like an island that had been painted in 2 different colors..lush tropical green on one side, and ugly bleak grey on the other. Even tho it had been 3 years since the eruption half of the island was still buried in ashes. it was sad to think about what it looked like before it happened. Pegs222 Posted September 16, 2009 #212 Share Posted September 16, 2009 On our second cruise we saw dolphins on the side of the ship. It was so cool it see them following the ship. The whales we saw in Alaska last month, very very cool. There were so many of them and they were very active.
Senoj84 Posted September 16, 2009 #213 Share Posted September 16, 2009 This has probably been said already but I'll post it again. ;) The coolest thing for me is watching the water and watching the sun set on the first day of the cruise. I love it!!! It's so beautiful and no matter what picture you take you can never capture the real beauty. The pics do no justice. I also like seeing the pretty blue-green water at some of the ports. CapeCodCruiser Posted September 16, 2009 #214 Share Posted September 16, 2009 Although there are numerous cool things on a cruise the best one for me was on our very first cruise - watching my DH REALLY relax! That was the best.
salty dingo Posted September 16, 2009 #215 Share Posted September 16, 2009 Coolest thing - literally and figuratively, would be the glaciers in Glacier Bay. We have seen lots of sea life - whales, orcas, seals, and lots of flying fish. I am fascinated with looking at the ocean and looking for signs of life. It's out there, if you look enough. luv-2-cruise Posted September 17, 2009 #216 Share Posted September 17, 2009 The coolest thing for me was when the Cruise Director on our Azamara Journey cruise took us up to the front of the ship, had them turn off all of the lights and started pointing out all of the constellations, planets and stars. This was the first and only time I've ever seen the "Milky Way". It was AMAZING!
bluelghttr Posted September 17, 2009 #217 Share Posted September 17, 2009 i think for me one of the coolest things was on my first cruise on the celebration we had the celebrity zenith as our shadow the entire week wherever we were so was the zenith. but the coolest part was when we were sailing back to miami on our port side was our constant friend the zenith, but then there was a buzz in the dining room, and people were moving to the windows on the starboard side where the sovereign of the seas had pulled up. so there were the three of us zenith, celebration, sovereign all side, by side the rest to the trip back to miami. i thought it was neat
Cuizer2 Posted September 17, 2009 #218 Share Posted September 17, 2009 What's the coolest thing you've seen while at sea? An iceberg. It doesn't get much cooler than that. :)
BlueJacketsFan1 Posted September 17, 2009 #219 Share Posted September 17, 2009 We also remember approaching St. Thomas and all the smaller islands as the sun was just coming up. It really was very beautiful to see. The one thing I look for each cruise from our balcony is dolphins. We haven't seen any yet, but we hope for better luck on our upcoming cruise. jules815 Posted September 17, 2009 #220 Share Posted September 17, 2009 One time sailing out of PC we saw a large hammerhead shark sailing next to the boat. On our last cruise; Mexican Riv, last sea day sailing back to LA, we were out on our balcony having our morning coffee, and we spotted 2 groups of whales. A couple of them breached; it was very cool. We weren't even expecting to see whales since it was July.

h_blond2 Posted May 9, 2010 #222 Share Posted May 9, 2010 We were eating breakfast outside and we could see these little shiny things right under the surface of water. Turns out that they were jellyfish! It was very cool to see them, but be at a safe distance! :D I also loved seeing the flying fish!
astropilot Posted May 9, 2010 #223 Share Posted May 9, 2010 Whales along the inside passage on our way to Vancouver. They were EVERYWHERE; the captain came on and told us in all his years he had never seen anything like it! I have some of it on video, but no stills. I have to say that other than the sunrises and sunsets, nothing compares to the amount of beautiful scenes I had a chance to witness in Alaska:Davidson Glacier Coast Guard escort out of Skagway Planes flying by the ship as we approached Ketchikan Very cool pixs Gail. Thanks for sharing.
AZchieffan Posted May 9, 2010 #224 Share Posted May 9, 2010 In 1986 I was on a Costa cruise out of Miami, on the first night the ship and all ships around stopped at sea. Come to find out a sail boat had capsized and a women was stranded all alone at sea. We were all on deck watching them try to find her. The crew from our ship was able to find her and brought her on board and she sailed with us to St. Thomas. It was so dark at sea, it was so amazing that they found her. winddawn Posted May 9, 2010 #225 Share Posted May 9, 2010 With all the "Favorite" and "Best" threads on this board, here's one for you. What's the coolest, most memorable thing you've seen while at sea? Here are my three: Sailing past St. Thomas at night. We could see an island approaching but weren't sure what it was. Then as we passed, we made out that it was St. Thomas. We could make out the tramway, Mountaintop and the basic outline of the island by its silhouette. Really cool. Having a huge pod of Pacific White Side Dolphins sail with us on our way back to Vancouver. Amazing. I have pictures that show up to 30 breaking the water at any one time. I knew it was special when crewmembers were scurrying to take pictures. Sailing through a thunderstorm on the open sea. Nothing like sitting on your verandah (dry) watching the lightning light up the sky. It's almost surreal. Triple rainbow over the ocean from my balcony.....huge pod of dolphins breaking water next to the ship......glaciers calving icebergs.....
