WOW, really??

I saw you are on Anthem right now. Hope you all are

enjoying your cruise. We were on Anthem the second

week in December and really enjoyed our cruise.

The prices for a New Year's Eve cruise are pretty high,

just can't believe anyone has to pay extra to attend 270's party.

We have been on several Royal Caribbean New Year's Eve cruises and

we have never paid any extra, this most be new.

It looks like Royal is starting nickel and dime too much.

Sad to say...

I brought this up on the other thread. What is the capacity of 270? Is it around 4,000? I doubt it. So, not everyone gets to go anyway

Just insane. I've done some NYE cruises on RCI (going back a number of years) and Carnival, and vowed to never do another one because the "privilege" of paying a premium to sail on a ship packed to the gills (and with 1,000+ children) simply doesn't appeal to us. Now this nonsense? No thanks.

But, as others have correctly stated, the cruise lines will continue to charge if people will pay... they are in business to make a profit after all!

CNN's Richard Quest is joining a cruise ship for a broadcast 'off the Bahamas' as part of the live broadcast throughout the evening on New Years Eve.

They were on Quantum last year. Any sign yet that they will broadcast from Anthem?

The ships and their venues haven't changed size.

No charging for NYE events or celebrations before.

Understood, just saying if Royal has decided to create a new type of event, so be it. Has anyone said this is the only NYE event on the ship?

Anything special going on in the casino, eg. champagne, canapes, etc.

On the NYE flyer it says special events are taking place in Vinrages, Seaplex, North Star, and 270. All have charges. Trying to still find out if something is definitely happening on pool deck for the rest of us who do not want to pay extra to enjoy New Year. Bartender at 270 (Johanna.. She is great) says there will be fireworks at the back of ship.

More bingo, belly flop, and fun to look forward to today.

Just got back from guest services. Seems the 1500 charge at 270 has dropped to $1000 for a couple. Includes "special show", bottle of Dom, chocolate covered strawberries.

Pool deck will have countdown on large screen and a party. That venue is free but besides that, that is all she knew. Although I think I would have preferred 270 as our NYE venue, I am okay with party on pool deck...

I must say this post made my jaw actually drop. It's like Royal thinks they can do what NYC bars and clubs do on NYE on their ship. If I were on that ship and didn't know this ahead of time I'd be seriously upset. Champagne and strawberries hardly warrant such a price tag. And unless the entertainment is some serious celebrity singer or band, there is no value in the cover charge. It's too bad they seem to be doing this with all their venues, it's like those who are unwilling to pay will be prisoners on their own ship with no where free to ring in the new year. I guess you could just stand in the atrium with a drink.

Interesting. I'd be fine with the pool deck venue. Anything going on in the Royal Esplanade?

We came off Anthem this past Sunday (the Christmas cruise) and originally I had hoped to be sailing this week but the prices were too high.

We enjoyed the ship but after hearing what they are charging for people to sit in a particular venue for NYE, I'm glad we sailed last week. While she's a great ship, there is nothing on her that I'd pay $500/pp to see, and it appears that they are providing a chair, perhaps a televised show and some chocolate and/or champagne. Definitely not worth it.

I know that on Christmas day, they offered a special menu with champagne in the Windjammer (cards were on the tables advertising it) but there was no listing for a charge. And Jamie's had something as well. But to watch the televised ball drop? No way.

Have they finally gone mad? $1500 NYE seats, near-doubled drinks prices, more and more surcharges by the week... This is all going to implode at some point, someone at RCI is going crazy with the onboard revenue and needs to remember quickly that not everyone who cruises with them can afford this.

I agree with you, but keep in mind they don't need "everyone who cruises when them" to afford such nonsense. Even if only a few couples decide to bite the bullet and pay $1,000 each to celebrate in 270, RCI's made several thousand dollars more than they would have made otherwise... That's a win for them.

Those prices are staggering, especially when you consider the people on board have already paid some of the highest prices of the year to cruise on a ship that's packed to the gills.

I'm thankful I retired so I'm not tied to a school calendar for my vacations any more!:D The price difference is substantial, and it's much less crowded!:)

I guess Royal figures if Olive Garden can charge $400 per person for the evening they can charge too. At least with Olive Garden you get unlimited bread sticks. :p :D

Good one except the unlimited bread sticks are not included! It was just on the news!

My daughter is currently on the Anthem and is in law school (in other words, broke). I would have loved to see the look on her face when those prices were announced. :)

She was lucky - she got a great deal on the cruise but those prices are insane. I wouldn't pay it based on principle. What is Royal thinking?
