Live from the Brilliance - at 3:45 am all H*** broke loose!

We are skipping Egypt altogether. Now 2 days in Malta.

 

Gym is in shambles - Ellipticals looked like monkey bars; spin bikes everywhere.

 

Long lines for buffet breakfast in dining room at breakfast and lunch. Windjammer is at least open for dinner.

 

Provisions are running low, too, I heard, as food was lost.

 

And no, it hasn't put me off of cruising!! I'll be back!!

Only wine, beer, and soda available at the Centrum bar and Schooner bar. Casino closed, shops closed. No one allowed out on upper decks.

Carol,I know that even this experience wouldn't put you off of cruising, though the closed casino might give Rita second thoughts:D

I wonder how they will repair this ship- while docked in Malta? Do you all think the damage to the ship will affect the next few sailings? We are scheduled for the Dec 29th sailing. I dont know if the Dec 17th cruise was sold out or if you are unable to purchase European cruise tickets a certain length of time out from the deprature date, but when I checked the RCCL website, you are unable to purchase tickets for the Dec 17th cruise. Your thoughts?

My daughter is a beauty therapist in the spa. She rang at 3.30am in a panic saying the ship was rolling from side to side and that her cabin was trashed.

Since then she has let us know that she is okay, just in complete shock...

'' You can't even begin to imagine the damage on the ship, its awful. ... Windows, showers, mirrors, the hairdressing basins have all smashed... The whole ship is wrecked... Grand piano smashed through a window.....There were passengers running around with life jackets on, people screaming, all the spa girls were panicking...... its really horrible! At sea now and still rocking and rolling... Hopefully dock in Malta in two days!''

 

If the ship has to go into dry dock we might have our daughter home for Christmas!!

I would call RCI and ask. If things are just superficial you may be fine. Having just got off the Brillance last month reading about this has put my heart in my throat. Sounds like an all around nightmare. With seas as bad as they were, not sure why the decided to do something that would require the stabalizers not to operate properly. Wonder if some human error is at work.

My friend is on this cruise and posted on Facebook this morning that they had 30 ft waves, 73 miles an hour wind and the ship rolled 20 degrees.

Royal Caribbean said some passengers aboard its Brilliance of the Seas suffered minor injuries in the heavy swells and high winds, which caused the ship to list several times as it tried to approach Alexandira. The ship has sustained some damage to the public areas, which in no way affects the sea-worthiness of the ship, the company said.

Because of the inclement weather, Brilliance of the Seas was unable to call in Alexandria, and instead proceeded to the next port of call, Valetta, Malta, the company added.

We're scheduled for the cruise leaving on the 29th so my wife called RCCL to ask them if they had any additional information. They said that while there were some minor injuries aboard, all the passengers were treated and none of the injuries were serious. There was damage to some public areas but "nothing that affected the seaworthiness" of the ship. As was stated here, the cruise is continuing to Malta. Basically there wasn't any information that hasn't already been posted here, but I figured I'd pass this along.

 

I'm certainly glad to hear that the injuries were minor and I hope that they can get things back in order for the poor folks who are there now.

 

So I wonder ... how much is there to do in Malta if you're there for 2 days?

Just got a call from my son and DIL who are on their honeymoon. They said very scary as well. Hope to have video soon they are trying to send from their phone. Will send some updates when I have them. They said all computers had smashed in internet cafe and Grand piano smashed into wall. Much broken glass all over ship, Windjammer closed.

 

This is just awful! But, thank goodness the injuries weren't serious. We've written a news item about it for the site, thanks to the information provided by all of you: http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=4269.

FYI- it's being described as the worst storm in the area in many years.

 

The storm hit Israel on Friday, and we've had 100 KM/H winds, heavy rain, and snow. Right now the wind is still raging outside my windows, and snow is predicted in the Jerusalem area (it fell up north earlier).

 

We've had power outages, lots of flooding, closed ports, flight delays, raging sand storms in the Negev, and crashing waves in Eilat. A ship sank off the coast at Ashdod, another was 'grounded'..

 

So yes- it is a very, very, very rare storm. All the reports coming from the ship's passengers are no doubt accurate and VERY scary. Thank goodness Carol and Laura and their fellow passengers are safe! Hopefully, they'll be out of the reach of the storm soon, and will only face calm seas and relaxation for the rest of their cruise!

The poster didn't say that the captain decided not to use the stabilizers. She said after slowing down to enter the port that the stabilizers were not effective. I am not completely sure at this minute about my physics, but I believe that there has to be a certain about of forward motion for stabilizers to really have an effect. Though this is not a perfect analogy, think of the wing of an airplane, below a certain amount of air moving past the wing it is nothing more than a piece of metal and composite sticking out from the body of the plane. It will neither lift nor keep the plane up in the air.
