Windjammer for Dinner???

Recommended Posts

I may try the Windjammer for dinner this upcoming cruise.

What kind of entrees do they serve? What about Jade - any sushi at dinner?

I am travelling on the Liberty and I have been to the MDR, of course and the

specialty restaurants. Figured I would try something new.

Comments,please...

The WJ has a very nice dinner spread IMO... I do not remember sushi, but Jade had some nice Oriental offerings as well... Enjoy!!!

The Windjammer is a totally different place at dinner time, especially after sunset. They dim the lights and have a team of servers walking around to bring you drinks. The first time I ate dinner in the WJ was a few cruises ago and I was delightfully surprised. It was pretty nice. It is nothing like the breakfast and lunch debacle.

And yes, I have seen sushi on every RCI ship I have sailed.

I think the food is at least as good as what you get in the MDR. Plus you have many additional choices. Plus you can eat when you want, without any hassle. And meals can be much quicker, so you have more time to do all the great activities.

Dinner in WJ is very calm and relaxing. It's not crowded. They offer most of the dishes from the MDR menu plus more. You can load your plate up with as much food as you like and go back for seconds or thirds. You don't have to sit around waiting for your dessert. Dinner in the WJ last as long as you want it to last.

Yes, the Jade section has sushi...enjoy!

I am more of a Windjammer diner - having to fly to port limits the luggage and the 'fancy' clothes (ie not shorts & T) and I agree dinner in the WJ is a totally different atmosphere compared to the trough feeding at breakfast & lunch. I wasn't feeling great at MDR dinner time so the family joined me for their 2nd dessert while I had turkey dinner @ the WJ

Yes I could have hit the salad bar and found something to bedazzle my meat with and made it 'prettier' and who has baked potatoes with turkey dinner? Isn't mashed the standard option??

Wow, I didn't know WJ was so delightfully accomidating for dinner. It looks like our group is all MTD for dinner. But if we get in from port a little later and dinner reservations aren't working out or walkin' times are too long this would be a great option. And we aren't rushing to sit in some half decent seats for the show either. That's right I said 'sit' in the theatre seats.;)

Thanks everyone for the great info, I will pass this along to my group!

We love dinner in the WJ, to the point where we usually give up our table assignment in the MDR and eat in the WJ most of the week (one night we'll go to Chopos).

WJ at night is quiet ... the lighting is subdued ... not too crowded ... we get a table right at the back window so we can watch the wake ... we can talk to each other in a quiet civilized tone ... and the food happens to be quite good.

We highly recommend it, but would not advertise the fact as we want to keep it our little secret. :)

We also highly recommend WJ for dinner. We had signed up for My Time Dining on our recent Med cruise, but we found what we liked to do each evening was to go really casual... unwind from our busy port day, and go to WJ for dinner. It was fabulous! On Brilliance in July, best WJ food we have had at sea. Amazing. :)

Also, please remember to pay your tips as you would were you dining in the Dining Room. Some passengers may not realize that the MDR staff also rotates to work in other venues - Windjammer included.

When we do week-enders on MN, we never do MDR. We always do Jade the first night (then go downstairs to WJ for dessert):D, and do WJ the other two nights. We always book MTD just in case they're offering something outstanding in the MDR, but so far, the food's a lot better in WJ.

We had MTD on our cruise in February on the Adventure of the Seas. The service was so poor and rushed we stopped going to the MDR and went to the WJ for dinners the rest of the week. Service was awesome, plenty of choices, including fresh customized stir fry, sushi, steak, ethinc food. Big dessert bar.

Wife and I are going to Europe in 2013 and planning nothing but the WJ and a night at one of the specialty restaurants for that trip.

If the same staff is in the MDR every evening for dinner then I am assuming there is a different staff for WJ. Where do their tips come from and do any of you leave a nightly tip in WJ?

I am a dining room person and have had dinner in WJ only once in a while.

Thanks

The WJ staff on the Adventure was the same every night, they had set sections. We sat in the same section every night, our guy there, Jose, was ready for us with our drinks each night after he saw us walk in. We gave him $40 cash at the end of the cruise. We had prepaid the tips but learned that they would be applied to our MTD rotation even if we didn't eat in the MDR. We couldn't move them to our WJ server.

Well, it looks likes it is unanimous for the WJ.

So, I will disagree. For me, there is something special about eating in the MDR. It's the atmosphere. We don't get to eat out at quasi-fancy places very often.

There is something special in going to the MDR, being presented with a menu and being waited upon.

In contrast, the WJ is simply a buffet. You get your own food. The atmosphere is certainly less than the MDR.

Is the food the same? Do they serve lobster tails in the WJ? Are the dessert selections the same?

Guess to sum up, I can eat anytime in my local Chinese buffet or at Wendy's or MacDonalds. When on a cruise, I like something a little special and find that in the MDR.

We too love the MDR concept. We have always gone to the MDR when on DCL trips, but for whatever reason our RCCL cruise the MDR was not relaxing, nor enjoyable. We sat for long periods of time waiting to be waited on, and when we were finally served the food was basically plopped down as they rushed to serve the other tables.

Sorry but cruise line food isn't to die for in most cases. Does the WJ serve lobster? Nope. But its certainly not similar to a chinese buffet or Wendy's as you compare it. The WJ does feature many of the same entree's being served in the MDR, lamb, steak, etc. Did it have the lavish items like escargot or lobster, no. Desserts, full bar of them, from creme brulee, to pies, to different cakes.

I hear what you are saying about wanting to be waited on, but when that fails and you decide to dine on your schedule in the WJ, you will be pleasantly surprised at how relaxed and enjoyable it is to dine there.

i was on the liberty in may, and they had escargot in the WJ!

also many of the same entrees, i remember the shrimp ravioli they had on the MDR menu was definitely in the WJ, as were the same soups.

I live in Las Vegas, the Mecca of fabulous buffets, and I wouldn't eat at even the best ones out there (Aria, Wynn) more than a couple times in a week, so I can't imagine doing dinner in the WJ more than once a week. Buffet food is buffet food, even at it's best it's not great. It's good for convenience, but, at least in my opinion, not what I look forward to on a cruise. To each his own. :)

Hi Stephanie!

We love, love, love the WJ at night! The lights are dim, there are white tableclothes, and the tables are set with silverware for you. It's completely different than during the day.

You do serve yourself from the buffet (much better food than at lunchtime), but once you get to your table, you will have a server, bringing you drinks and anything else you need. They even come around with a rolling coffee cart, toward the end of your meal.

It's romantic and quiet in there in the evenings. Not as crazy as the MDR.

Trust me!!! ;)

Come to think of it, the night they served escargot in the MDR was the last night we ate there. NICE!

We have seen escargot and shrimp cocktail in the WJ at dinner along with most entrees. I have not seen lobster but I know one poster who saw lobster tails.

We enjoy the cooked to order foods they offer at dinner in the WJ. They have a made to order pasta bar sometimes. We have had pizza cooked to order, minute steaks, grilled chicken, fish and various stir fries. We also like the make your own ice cream sundaes with hard scoop ice cream.

Always prefer fresh, made to order, instead of food from the steamer trays in the MDR.

The way food on a cruise ship is massed produced its all basically buffet food, its just dished up behind a closed door when you are in the MDR and you don't get to mix and match it!

:p
