HAL pulling out of NY--other lines expanding

I wish you would have resisted, but I can't resist responding. New Yorkers get a bad rap and they are no different than people from any other large city in this country. Since your glory days were before 9/11, you can't know how New Yorkers have changed. There is an air of family, helpfulness and friendliness that probably rivals all the big cities. I hope you see that when you sail Veendam out of NY.

When Noordam sailed out of NY, we took a 10 day cruise down to the Caribbean and never minded the days up and back since we were on the ship and that's where we wanted to be. Wish HAL would come back.

Not so sure I agree with you about New Yorkers ( I am currently in my 28th year of working in the City) but certainly miss the 10 days or more out of the city. The Noordam was wonderful and yes my 13 year old son had a blast!

We loved sailing on the Noordam out of New York and hope to enjoy Bermuda on the Veendam in May. I, too, am sorry that HAL is pulling out of New York...if Carnival and Norwegian are putting ships there year-round, it must be a money maker

I've heard the same thing about a ship full of Texans sailing out of Galveston. (I guess it is the personality that you are accustomed to.)

Ditto for Baltimore................

Cruising out of NYC is great! We're about 2-2.5 hour drive away, so we leave PA at 8 am and at the terminal, with grabbing some victuals, by 11.

Same for MD too, it is only about 1.75 - 2.25 drive.

As for any NY attitude, in my experience the attitude is the same as what you see in any other major city of the NE. Philly & Boston have the same attitude. What is it like? You ever been to Jets game, or a Flyers game, or Sox game? Just spread that ambiance across the city for an idea of what they're like.

Love cruises from NYC and NJ, just wish the cruise lines would change the itinirary for the Caribbean cruises, only so many times you can go to Grand Turk and Puerto Rico.

We have taken the following cruises out of NY/NJ: Princess (1), Carnival (1) and Royal (3). In June we are going to Bermuda on HAL. Nothing like leaving home at 9am being on the ship at 12noon and similar results when come back home. Also you can pack whatever you want and don't have to worry about weight limits on luggage. NY cruises make for a stress free vacation start to finish.

We love New York and have spent many happy times there, including some cruises leaving from the Manhattan piers.

Most of the uncomplimentary remarks I have heard about sailing with New Yorkers were regarding cruises during spring break or other school holidays. The complaints seemed to be centered around the wild and crazy kids on board and the reportedly lax attitude their parents had about keeping them in check.

We don't do such cruises so that does not come into play with us. New York is still one of the worlds most thrilling places, IMO, and we always look forward to being there.

Just a guess. Although NYC is a great, albeit expensive tourist destination.

HAL may be leaving due to excessively high fees, taxes and labor costs in port.

Its all about making a profit. Nothing wrong with that.

If that's the case, then how do the other lines make a profit sailing out of NY?

The phenomenon of uncontrolled kids does exist in NY, but it exists pretty much everywhere too. I believe it comes from several different reasons. Since most families are two income families, they have nannys that care for their kids or they're in day care, and they really don't know how to relate or discipline them. The other reason is "it's there vacation and why should they have to watch over their children when they think they're in a protected environment?" I've read reports here about teens terrorizing the cruisers but it wasn't on a cruise from NY.

Increased passenger capacity, perhaps? I'm not sure of the total passenger load each of the other ships can handle, but perhaps the Veendam is the smallest of them all and therefore not generating the same revenue vs. expense.

Regardless, it is a shame to see it happen. We look forward to our first HAL cruise in a few weeks and its sad to think that if we really enjoy the line (and I suspect we will) we'll have to fly to find a ship.

In the case of Bermuda, HAL has one more day in Bermuda than the others have. So maybe it's the extra sea day, when they can make money on the casino, shops and bars. I know the bars are open on port days, but most people are off the ship and not drinking on board.

Also, I wonder if the other ships make more money on Bermuda excursions than HAL does. Docking at Hamilton is so convenient for getting a bus to any location, I don't see much need for a ship's tour, except maybe for a snorkel tour or boat ride, and even those can be booked independently. Transportation from the Dockyards takes longer and can be crowded when 6000 people all want to go to the beach, so maybe people on those ships take tours in order to simplify transportation. just a guess.

This is justing talking about NYC. There is also the port in Bayonne, NJ which has one ship year around and another during the summer. Just because HAL doesn't do it doesn't make ita bad business deal. Since I live here we take lots from here, most of the time most of the pas are non NY's, many from Europe. I don't think it speeks well for the HAL cheerleaders to try to make their point using ethnic remarks.

I agree with you Justin.. It's an offensive insult to N.Y'ers apparently trying to be funny, which it isn't! :(:(

Wonder how they would like it if a NY'er said something like that about cruising with a bunch of people from their hometowns..

New Yorkers are intelligent enough to know that just because a ship sails out of a certain city that not everybody on that ship is from that city. ;)

AND, you won't catch me on formal night less'n I'm sportin' my Sunday go to meetin' best! AND, I ne'er forget to bring my most preciousest possession - my sense of humor!!

On a more serious note the term REDNECK gets thrown around on this and other boards on a regular basis without criticism. The white southerner is fair game. (Had a bunch of rednecks on our cruise... People acting like rednecks...). We`ve read comments like this before.

Rich,
I haven't seen the "Redneck" label on this forum. I don't know if it would surprise me or not. I just thought the conversation was getting a little sideways, and decided to make fun of myself before things got worse. Every part of the country has a "reputation." I'm actually from the midwest, so I could be accused of being bland and "cornfed." If I had known people would be so defensive, I would have just kept my memories to myself! I will from now on!

I seriously can't recall ever seeing the term 'redneck' used on the HAL boards, or some of the others that I visit much less often.
Hey, we have the same problem going on in California. Hal seems to be pulling out but other cruise lines are coming in. What's the deal.........

HAL is still here in San Diego ! And the Amsterdam occasionally in Long Beach too, depending on their itinerary.
it seems other cruiselines are expanding their itineraries out of NY and we all know HAL is ending the Bermuda run after this season---go figure!
Are you listening HAL??
We would love to see more HAL ships (or even one!) in NY for the future.
Confused...is the issue that HAL has dropped the Bermuda run, or that HAL will not be in NY more often on their itineraries ?

At least one HAL transatlantic in 2013 will come into NY, othewise Boston is the better port for Canada/New England routes.

Hi Peter. A forum search of past posts on this forum reveals four pages of it`s usage. The Carnival forum has eleven pages as another example. Not all posts were derogatory but the word was used. Some folks happily refered to themselves as rednecks as they were from the south.

Being born and raised, and living all but about 20 of my 64 years in New York, I would like to share my feelings about us.

Life in this city, due to congestion mainly, tends to become very competitive. For housing, for jobs, for recreation, for transportation, whatever. As a result, people here move at a fast pace, or lose out. And time becomes a prescious commodity in itself. And to survive, you must have a somewhat aggressive attitude. To some outside observer's, such attitude may come across as being rude at times. But I can assure you that is not the intent. It is just hard to 'turn off' when leaving town, going on a vacation. I think once you really get to know us, you will find that we are no different than anyone else, and sometimes are very generous and caring to others.

I agree that some folks from other parts of the country 'love to hate' us,
which may be partially brought on by jealousy, such as attitudes toward our Yankee baseball team. I think we are thick-skinned, and are not at all affected by it, but rather are amused. And someone mentioned 9-11.
I will say that the whole country, and other parts of the world really supported us during those times, and showed affection.

So the next time you meet one of us on a cruise, give us a chance.:)
