Smoke free ships

It was the Carnival Paradise that originally sailed as a 100% smoke-free ship. It did so every sailing and the challenge was that it was difficult to book groups as invariably any group would have at least one or two smokers who would not be willing to sail on a smoke-free ship.

However, I do think with the changing times Celebrity could do well with a couple of smoke-free sailings as opposed to every sailing being smoke free.

I sailed Carnival Paradise on a 7 day smoke free cruise and remember a few people getting kicked off for smoking. I thought the cruise would be old people and a docile crowd. That proved wrong. It was out of Miami and I never saw so many tats and body piercings on any of my other cruises (and I cruise a lot) That was a rough crowd.

Here's the Celebrity policy -- e-devices are specifically mentioned --

What is your onboard smoking policy?

For the comfort and enjoyment of our guests, our ships are designated as non-smoking; however, we recognize that some of our guests smoke. Therefore, cigarette, cigar and pipe smoking is permitted in designated outdoor areas of the ship. Smoking is not permitted in any dining venue, casino, theater, lounge, hallway, elevator or corridor. This policy includes smoking-like products such as electronic cigarettes. Smoking is not permitted inside any guest stateroom, nor on any guest veranda. If a guest is in violation of this policy, a cleaning fee of $250 USD will be applied to their SeaPass account and the guest may be subject to further action pursuant to the "Consequences Section" of the Guest Conduct Policy. Cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco must be properly disposed of and never thrown overboard. A guest must be at least 18 years of age to purchase, possess or use tobacco onboard.

Additionally, there is a non-smoking policy on all components of the land tour portion of all Celebrity Cruises cruisetour products. We appreciate your understanding and adherence.

will there truly be anywhere on this earth that you can go where it is completly smoke free???? surely, all of you who hate the smell of smoke so much, must encounter smokers throughtout your daily lives, I know we do, going in and out of work we have smokers, standing at the bus stop, out door places in town, outside the local pub its everywhere, and I cant see anyone getting away from it completly unless the live as a hermit x

Living in California and having no friends that smoke -- It is very rare for us to encounter smoke. It probably makes it that much more objectionable when we do.

Almost all better hotels are smoke free and smokers are supposed to stay a distance from door ways. I work with several large corporations and health care organizations and the the only smoking area they have is completely off their campuses. The smokers look so pathetic huddled together on the street like they're waiting for a bus, but they're just feeding their addiction.

It is fast becoming a socially unacceptable habit. I'm not trying to offend anyone, it's just the way it is.

I don't think there is a need for non-smoking ships. If those that smoke would keep their smoking to designated areas and not try to sneak a cigarette on their balcony or other places and if those that don't smoke, would respect the rights of those that do, a ship with smoking would work well.

BTW, I gamble, but don't smoke, drink and use very little caffine.

I would love a non-smoking ship! However, my husband smokes the pipe. He loves to sit on the balcony with a cup of coffee and his pipe in the morning. On Princess he was allowed to do that (I think they changed their policy as well).

So I ordered an e-pipe over the internet and it arrived yesterday. My husband is quite impressed, it looks like a normal pipe but no smell whatsoever!! This way he still can "smoke" his pipe with a cup of coffee on our Celebrity Cruise in December! Problem solved :)

Maybe they should only allow e-cigarettes, e-pipes...

Sorry but Celebrity considers e devices the same as regular cigarettes, pipes or cigars. They are forbidden also..

I am not certain, but I believe that the e-cigs and pipes are also proscribed except in the designated smoking areas.

Not sure if a non smoking ship/itinerary is necessary. As someone else said, as long as everyone follows the rules the current policy is fine. it is only an issue when someone doesn't think the rules apply to them.

I pretty much run every day on the ship and take a little bit of joy running past the smoking section. You see the people that just crawled out of bed and came up for their first cigarette of the morning. Pretty comical actually as I go running past them, over and over (small track).

Just a comment on interacting with smokers on a daily basis. I can go days without smelling smoke. Our building and entire campus is smoke free. All the restaurants are smoke free. All of my friends are smoke free. Of course where I work out is smoke free and neither my wife or I smoke. Nothing against smokers as my adult daughter smokes but doesn't live with us so I really don't hang out with anyone that smokes. But, having smoking areas allows a lot more families that have 1 smoker, like mine, to go on Celebrity.

enjoy,

Duane

Oh, thanks for letting me know  But I don't understand this policy, this e-pipe doesn't smell at all (and I hate the smell of pipes/cigarettes).

Well, then he has to to go to the designated smoking areas! He has no problem with that, here in Australia he is used to it ;)

My first cruise was on the Carnival Paradise when it was smoke free (December 2003). There were constant announcements warning passengers that if they were caught with smoking material, they would be put off at the next port.

I like NCL's smoke free lounges. The only drawback is the casino. I was looking at bookings for NCL last weekend and found a disclaimer for their cabins and balconies: no smoking in the cabins and no cigars or pipes on the balconies (cigarettes permitted:confused:). I'm satisfied with both lines policies.

We like the Celebrity policy just the way it is now.

It gives us non-smokers our smoke free space, while still enabling friends or family members who smoke to come along on the same cruise with only minor inconvenience to them.

A cruise ship is quite different from a hotel or office building where people can step outside and walk away if they want to smoke.

I guess to provide the equivalent on a cruise ship, they could make the ship entirely smoke free and drag a raft along behind for smokers.

Still some passengers would complain about the smoke if the wind happened to be blowing the wrong way, especially those on the aft balconies. ;)

Where I live, (S. CA) it's very rare to run into a smoker, we've got very restrictive smoking laws here, plus, I have to say I don't know anyone who does smoke... other than the occasional pipe or cigar, it's just not an issue here, so yes, I'd love to see a smoke free ship.

I appauld your response!

I have severe allergy to perfume so I politely remove myself from anyone with a little too much on... should we have a frangrance free cruise?

I'm petite and seated beside a large person who encroaches into my seat...should we have flights for skinny people only?

WHAT'S NEXT?

Well, I'l give you my opinion about the smoking policy. Nowadays a total allowance of smoking is impossible, but I don't think either an almost-total-smoke-free policy is.

First of all we have to think about tolerance and respect from both, smokers and not-smokers. There is enough room in the ship to make everyone happy, I'm not talking about smoking on the restaurants, theatre...but it will really ther bad to allow smokers in one or two bars? I'm not talking about the casino, were people want to smoke but is allmost impossible to avoid that smoke in the not-smoking side. Really I don't think making the smokers allways go to open deck to smoke is fare, wind, cold in the night...for now smoking is legal and smokers are also people who are usualy treated like trash.

About not smoking on the balconys, please, don't tell me that that can bother neighbours, unless you are 24hours smoking bug cigars, when the ship is moving the wind takes all the smoke away not in the face or room of the neighbours.

Also please think about all the irrespectful, unpolite and anoying children, not just runnig, screaming and bothering everywere but also in the over18 places and noone says anything. And very drunk people, or even all that people that steals towels if you stop watching for one minute.

Sorry, but if smoking is allowed anywhere inside, it will pollute the interior air. There is no way to keep it from rolling out of the bar into the passageway and down the hall. And yes, smoking on balconies does bother the neighboring staterooms.

Celebrity is very public about its smoking policies and there are plenty of other lines with more liberal smoking policies for those who don't wish to comply with Celebrity's restrictive policies.

Celebrity's smoking restrictions are very popular with a large majority of people. Indoor smoking areas just simply do not work. The smoke wafts out and negatively impacts nearby areas. I (along with countless others) was ecstatic when Celebrity banned indoor smoking. I just returned from a cruise line that allows indoor smoking in some venues (RCI) and the impact it had across so many venues was terrible and by far and away the biggest negative of my cruise.

People smoking on balconies certainly does have a negative impact on nearby people (unless one has a poor sense of smell or does not mind cigarette smoke). Just as the wind can blow the smoke away, it also can blow the smoke towards others. For me (and many others) it would be a waste of money to book a balcony room on a ship that permitted balcony smoking.

Not sure why you are listing other poor behaviors - that has nothing to do with smoking. Of course unruly children, obnoxious drunks, those who steal are bad as well. Has zilch to do with cigarette smoke being bothersome to a large majority of people.

I hate to tell you, but it can and does bother neighbors.
Had I not personally been affected by it, I would not have believed it.

It is for that reason I will never cruise RCI again because of their smoking policy.
And it is that reason I am almost dreading our DCL cruise next year for fear we will have smokers next door. (family cruise, not my choice).

Believe me, the wind does not take the smoke away!!! It flows down the side of the ship and heaven help you, if you have your balcony door open, it will suck it right inside your cabin Takes forever to get the smell out!!
That's why people who try to sneak a smoke on their balcony get caught - as soon as they try it there is a whole bunch of people phoning the front desk/security.

Agree 100%. On my last RCI cruise (and it will be my last until they change their policy!) we were thrilled to luck out with a huge hump balcony. We were then very unhappy to have chain smokers next to us who were there literally 95% of the time we wanted to use our balcony. They smoked and smoked and smoked (sometimes cigars) and I can honestly say that in a 7 night cruise we were able to sit out on our balcony less than three hours total. I was furious, but other than the cigars (which were only occasional) there wasn't a darn thing I could do about it as it was permitted on RCI. It was awful!! Never again!

Guri, as any average sized (or larger) person will tell you, flights are ALREADY for skinny people only! I am slightly larger than average (but not huge by any means) and there is barely room to squeeze into the seats, let alone be comfortable - that ship has sailed long ago so to speak:D

That is exactly what happened to us (sans the cigars). 2 chain smokers who felt it was their duty to always have at least one cigarette ablaze. Plus they turned their chairs to abut our mutual wall, to assure the smoke didn't have any chance of escaping off the ship.
