New MAGIC Bands are coming to RCCL

I hope the RFID bands eventually have some type of encryption system built in. Without a doubt there is someone out there with a skimmer who will try to use the skimmed info to gain entrance to staterooms or accounts. Many of the current RFIDs use a password or code that changes after each use or transaction.

Only my opinion.

I hope they have an option for a card AND the band. I can see some times where I'd want to skip the card and just have everything I need on my wrist, but other times I don't want to have the fashion equivalent of a hair tie on my arm. Would be nice to be able to remove the bracelet and grab your card instead when you want to.

I agree with the option. I would not want that on my wrist all the time when I am wearing a nice diamond bracelet or something.

Also, won't they have to do something to all the cabins so this wand opens your cabin door? Cannot see it being anything fleetwide for a while since they will have to change how all the cabin doors open.

Looks really bulky, hopefully they will let us continue to have a choice.

RFID Bracelet

There is a nominal fee for the bracelet. If you don't want the bracelet you can have the traditional SeaPass card.

Thank goodness. I don't want the bracelet, so thankfully I will be able to continue to get the SeaPass card. I don't even use a Lanyard! I just put my card in my pool bag or pouch that I take off the ship.

I guess bar service will have to carry readers to log drink purchases for those passengers that prefer the WOW band. It will make it a little easier on the pool guys that carry the drink trays and hand write slips. Unless a slip is printed, though, their extra tips will be greatly diminished.

I'm not thrilled about having to wear this band because I just don't see how making it one micro-second faster to leave the ship will really benefit me. I wear a watch, and I always have a pocket for my seapass. The bands will need to be dated somehow for ID use in ports. That guy that stands in that little shelter outside of the gang plank may need a reader, but what about the port authorities? By the way they could just as easily put RFID chips in your seapass card (Like some credit cards).

To the black helicopter crowd, no one really cares where you are unless you have committed a crime. In 10-15 years an EZ-pass or Sun-pass device will be history. Most states are planning on ripping out the toll booths and replacing them with only cameras to take a picture of your license plate to send you a bill. Once that technology is fully up to speed there will be state barrier tolls EVERYWHERE.

See you all on the Quantum...

Will the RFID bracelets alert the crew immediately if someone goes overboard? If so, they should be able to turn around immediately, and not delay an hour or more searching the ship for them.

Nope, there would be no way to know that from the bracelets.

Thanks Ken. It was not clear from the reveal or the press release that there was an option. As long as I have an option I am happy.

The bands are 2.00 dollars, and when you order it, they will place it in your room. You have the choice between the traditional sea pass or the band

Wow, all these posts are too funny. I have been to Disney. I have used these bands. These bands are a choice, not a requirement.

Some facts:

1. Both the card and the band has a chip in it. Your passport also has a chip in it. Basically, if you are on the ship, and you really believe big brother is watching your every move, than don't get it, but you still will be watched by all the cameras, and the sea pass card. Allure and Oasis already uses this.

2. This is not a paper taped bracelet you get. It is plastic, snaps on and off, and does not need to be worn all the time, like sleeping or taking pictures. Since I have been on too many cruises to be worried about a picture, it won't bother me.

3. Read previous posts about people wondering how to carry their card. Guess what, they now have a solution. Wear it. (remember, this is optional!)

4. Casino - how many times do you see people leaving their sea pass card in a slot machine? This solves the issue.

5. Ladies - leave you room, and you have no pockets in your swimwear. What do you do? Guys often still have a pocket, but ladies, you don't. Here is your solution! You still can get back to your room, buy a drink, and go swimming without the worry of misplacing your card.

So this is optional, solves many issues for some people, while letting others chose. It is a win win plan and remember, someone is watching you!!!!!!!

If it had a tracking feature it might also locate the missing teens and adults, that are in rooms other than their own in the middle of the night, to be found easier. Another words no announcements in all rooms at 4am.

On a serious note is there the chance that the wrist band could actually help locate those who truly go overboard accidentally? Of course depending on the reach of the chip?

When credit card companies started putting chips in cards, shielding wallets came out. Now they have blocking ID lanyards, EZpass, and phone pouches. They even make pocketbooks. Keep in mind though that if you put your phone in one, you won't get any incoming calls. A lanyard to hold your seapass is $9.95. A pouch to hold your bracelet is as low as $5.95. Take them out when you need them. Google it and relax everyone. Charles

A much cheaper option would be to wrap one's wrists in aluminum foil.

We were part of the Beta test at Disney as well and are happy it will be added to the RCl cruising experience.

From "E" Tickets to Wristbands at Disney to Wristbands on RCCL, the "Carousel of Progress" never stops. We will be excited to jump aboard and enjoy the ride.

I hope that there is still the option of having sea pass card instead of the RFID bracelet that was announced at the reveal today.

1. I do not like the idea of being tracked throughout the ship because I am wearing an RFID tag.

2. My wife mentioned now if we decide to purchase pictures we have to look and see if an awful bracelet is in the picture.

3. Most important to me is I cannot stand having something around my wrist and will not even wear a watch for an hour. How can I be comfortable for a week if I have to wear a bracelet.

I hope this is only an option and not required...

Thoughts?

I could not agree with you more.............Also when we go to port, we will be easy to spot as tourists and ship people....easy targets for those with bad intentions...........

Also will my class will be worn as a badge on my wrist...Pinnacle, D+, suite guests, gold members, not a loyalist.....will this be identified with various colors??? I know at WDW the suite guests have yellow bands while others have blue bands.

If I am just a lowly gold member in an inside cabin will my wrist badge identify me as such??? Like a Scarlet Letter?

Not sure I want to brand myself with a wrist band like cattle in a herd...

Charging a couple thousand dollars for a cruise and then charging 2 bucks for a wristband feels kind of low class.

I agree. Why not charge a little more and include it? This is why I like cruising DCL. There is little to no of this extra fee stuff.

Regarding colors of magic bands at WDW: the statements above are false. If you preorder your magic bands before you arrive, you can choose the color: gray, blue, pink, red, green or yellow. If you don't preorder your band and just get it at check in, you only get gray. Concierge level guests may get yellow but anyone else who wants yellow can plan ahead to get it as well.

No one is looking at the Big Picture, it's not a Big Brother issue, it is a ploy by RCI to reduce the number of D+ and Pinnacle members cruising. Introduce new smart technology and (going by the posts in this thread) they can cull the number of pax getting freebies and thus increase profits :)
