Summit has azipod problem leaving from New York

Yeah, they took a hit. The last update I saw was steady at 15 knots. To put it in normal terms, would anybody here notice a difference in handling and fuel consumption if they were driving a minivan down the highway at 90mph vs 65mph? Now, imagine if the road was undulating 2-3 feet every few seconds...

And that additional fuel cost comes before any kind of compensation - on board credit, future cruise credit, or liquid :D - that might have been offered to passengers.

Finally, before I forget: mny thx for your sevice, ChEng.

Also, the casino was closed that first night....

Captain put on the turbos! I was monitoring the Summit's progress to Bermuda and while the Breakaway was doing a steady 11.7 knots, the Summit was speeding at something like 15-17 knots. Having done this cruise several times, I knew Summit would more than make up the time. I'm just wondering how the ship felt going at that speed. Glad it made it to Dockyard on time.

(remembering the nightmares of the Azipods!!!)

It probably does the 15 to 17 knots every week coming back. I was on it a few weeks ago and there were no problems and we were in a rainstorm most of the time.

I believe the M-class ships normally cruise at 20-22 knots....and can run at 17 knots with one pod. Given the reported speeds, it's quite possible the summit is only running on one pod.

While this may be true horsepower wise, and can be done if necessary, it is way more efficient to use both screws even at pretty low speeds, as the "windmilling" prop absorbs energy. The efficiency would be if they could maintain 17 knots on one gas turbine. Not sure about that. But I bet at the 11-12 knot range they could do just fine with one turbine at full load.

I'm not understanding something. Some posts are saying the summit "really put on the turbos " (speeding at 15 - 17 kn). Wikipedia says summit's top speed is 24kn. To me, 15 to 17 kn is like doing 60 mph in your car (assuming your car can do 90 and you are on the autobahn). 15 kn is not really putting the pedal to the metal. Summit usually has 60 hours to get from cape liberty to bermuda, 36 hours to get back. Sunday, she only lost 12 hours in bayonne, still leaving 48 hours to get down. Why say she was rushing? Am I incorrect?

Wow. So many rumors fly around about something so simple.

There was a problem with the tight propulsion. It was fixed. We left Bayonne at 4 am. We were not given, nor should we be given, any OBC or free drinks. We arrived on time at the Dockyard at 830 am. Nothing was missed, changed or excluded from our trip because of the delay. Honestly, it shouldnt have affected anyone's trip whatsoever since we arrived on time.

As for the trip itself......service (speed) is very slow at dinner (and takes close to 2 hours to finish a meal if seated at 615pm when we go). There is no hot water in our stateroom. The a/c doesnt get too cold. The internet is CRAZY slow. The service, that is, professionalism is excellent. The ship is showing its age but I dont mind it much at all. Some of the rust though really should be taken care of. Its hot and humid in Bermuda. The food is excellent on the ship.

While I am 1000% with you in your sentiment towards our servicemen and women, I feel a little phony when someone says that to me.

Chief, don't sell yourself short. Anybody who sailed into the Gulf at that time was potentially sailing into harm's way. Even in the reserves, you were still a blue jacket. And somewhere lurking in the history of my mother's family is a Sandy Hook pilot. You don't have to be in the military - people like you, the Public Health Service Corps, the NOAA Commissioned Corps, and others have served (and continue to serve) this country well.

Hmmmm. The official schedule from the Bermuda (http://www.marineandports.bm/Documents/Shipping_schedules/2015_Cruise_Ship_Schedule.pdf) shows it scheduled to dock at 8:00am. I watched as the lines were thrown at about 11:15am local time in Bermuda.

Of course, the intent of my post was being impressed at how they made up almost all of the lost time in transit. IMHO, it shows that they valued their passengers' time by getting them there as close to the original planned arrival as possible to minimize any impact on shore excursions (Celebrity-provided or otherwise). That was done at a higher fuel cost due to the increased speed.

And since I'm gonna be on the ship in 4.5 weeks, taking my first cruise, all of that kinda makes me feel good. :D

Nope...we arrived at 830 am and not 1115 am. I know 2 nights ago we moved our clocks forward one hour but that still doesnt account for the difference in time you are talking about.

Have a good trip next month!

My guess then is that the PzTV people were showing a recording of the berthing when I was watching. I'm glad you got there on time. Have a ball!

No hot water? No showers? Hot and humid + no showers does not sound like a recipe for a very fun trip to me. . .hope you're still enjoying yourselves :(

No A/C or hot water, what cabin? I hope it's not up on Deck 11.

As of 9:10AM EDT (July 9), the Bermuda webcam is out. The marine traffic map does not show Summit docked in Bermuda. What's up?

She's there, just has AIS turned off. Check the Bermuda cam again. EM

cruising in a week and this AC problem is concerning me!!

down in the bowels of the ship (deck 2 inside) air conditioning was a little too cold. Agree with the slow service at 6:15. Delay didn't effect anything at all really on the cruise from the passengers standpoint. Just gave us all something to talk about.

I never said there wasnt a/c but rather, the a/c was not strong enough. It was a bit warm in my room and my father who traveled with me agreed. I also never had hot water for my shower. Not one single time.

Other than that, the service was very good on the ship (exception is the slow service in MDR). Great Captain. Good CD. Slightly better than average food. Very good comedian (Steve C.). Overall, it was a pleasant cruise...not the best I have had but certainly far from the worst. I can now say with multiple cruiselines being cruised, my fav is Princess.

What stateroom were you in when you never had hot water for your shower, not one single time? What did you do about it? What was the ship's resolution? What was your compensation?

I've never heard of such a thing.

Ive heard of such a thing because many complained of the same. I also had this issue on a ship several cruises ago (I think it was Princess).

I was in 9023. I didnt do anything because it bothered me but not enough to complain as I knew there wasnt much they could do. I was more concerned with the lack of very a/c in my room. I also never make complaints looking for compensation. To be honest, I hate when people jump to wanting that resolution so quickly. I find it happens so much lately with people who cruise.

Our experience on deck 11 was just fine. No problems with a/c. There was just one evening we had to let the shower run quite a while until we had water comfortably warm enough to shower with. I presumed too many pax were showering close to the same time. How did we resolve it.....sat on our balcony and had an extra drink before dinner. ;) :p :D

We'll be on deck 11 again in October. Here's hoping we'll have days warm enough for a/c. ;)

How can Celebrity fix the problem if you don't say something about it. I would have been down to Guest Relations immediately. Imagine the poor guy to come in after your cruise to no hot water. What did you do, go to the guy to shower? Would you complain if they ran out of food or your stateroom attendant didn't make up your room. Those aren't complaints in my opinion. Those are issues that the ship should want to correct.

Not having hot water for an entire cruise isn't a complaint but an issue and has nothing to do with compensation  The cruiseline would like to know about it and I feel bad for the people coming into the cabin after you....

No hot water in shower? Was there hot water at the sink? If so, the shower hot water shut off may have not been open all the way or if it had a single control, the mixing mechanism could have had issues. The fix could have been very simple. I never ran out of hot water due to a demand issue on a ship.
