Meet and Greet popularity

I think I understand the concept of a "cabin crawl" (although since I am in an inside cabin I can't imagine my place is going to be a big attraction), but what about the slot pull? How does that work? I mean I know it has to do with the casino ...
When one meet and greet I went to had the cabin crawl, they incorporated a poker run into it. Those who played put in $X and at each cabin visited everyone got a playing card and the best hand won the money..it was fun.

Cabin crawls are a lot of fun. Even to see the inside cabins because it helps you evaluate if booking one in the future is worthwhile. We have no problem with any cabin category because we are CRUISING, but some people see an inside and think "I must have a balcony". But then they see an ocean view and think "You know, if it's a choice between driving to the in-laws for vacation and an ocean view cabin on a cruise, I think this will do nicely".

We had a great cabin crawl on the Jade a few years back, and saw cabins in nearly every category. There was an inside, ocean view, balcony, mini-suite, penthouse suite (a 2 bedroom), an aft suite and then one of the large suites.

I'm sure it will. Don't miss it. *IF* it gets anything but friendly just leave. Most people are not mean and green in person as they can be over a computer screen.

....wow....I just read this whole thread and my head honestly hurts!! It was kind of like when you are passing a car accident and know you shouldn't rubber neck but, you gotta look!

I was on many cruises as a single person and pre CC... once I got married and started raising a family, my love of cruising was put on hold. When our family finally went on a Carnival Valor cruise 2/12 and, my husband and I did attend a sail away party and meet and greet. We had to pay( I think over $20/pp) for the meet and greet which did have an open bar. I don't recall any officers being there. It was a very quiet event with minimal interaction.

I have been a member of the Roll Call for the inaugural 11/14 Escape voyage since booking in January. It is a very active roll call with, probably, >150 people signed up for the Meet and Greet. Our roll call has many experienced cruisers with lots of good information. I am a very active "lurker" who, on occasion, will post but, I tend to defer to those who have been there, done that. I disagree with "Sea Shark's" assertion that, because I am not a frequent poster, I am less valuable or less likely to attend the Meet and Greet. After reading this thread, though, I am a bit hesitant to go. I would really hate to see the frequent sniping and negativity which permeates the NCL site, Everything Escape thread and, less so, our Roll Calll affect this event. I am going on this much needed cruise vacation to "escape" all the stress and negativity which I endure during my "real life"

I will continue to actively follow my roll call and hope that our Meet and Mingle will be a positive event.

I can guarantee that the Nov. 14 Escape sailing will have an excellent Meet and Greet worth attending. As a late-joiner to roll calls and one who still attends the M&G and as a lurker who still attends the M&G, I think the key is keeping the M&G open to all who wish to participate whether you are active on the roll call or not. Everybody doesn't have the time or motivation to post regularly on the roll call. That doesn't mean that they aren't interested in meeting others on the ship.

I've been to some great meet and greets, some good meet and greets and one really bad meet and greet (not on NCL). I'll probably be more picky which ones I attend in the future on NCL, based on who has signed up, as I really don't want to be embarrassed with folks backing the officers into a corner with their complaints.

I also sign up for the roll calls and on some I participate a lot and other not so much. It depends on how the roll calls go. I've been on some where a few are friends and the posts center around their lives, such as, what they are that day or what they did on the weekend and I usually don't really post, as I don't have anything to contribute. I've been on other roll calls where folks seems interested in meeting new people, getting ideas as to what to do at the ports, etc. and I do participate in those roll calls. To me, the tone of the roll call depends if I will participate a lot, a little or not at all.

You are right. M&G are not meant to be a complaint session with the officers and other employees of NCL. To me that is completely disrespectful to others in the M&G as well as the employees. It's supposed to be about meeting people on the cruise not to be there to complain and make it uncomfortable.

The only cabin crawl that I've even done was on the Breakaway Transatlantic. There were a couple in our group who immediately started going on about how they had been misled about it being an inaugural and had been expecting loads of events. They were trying to get others to agree with them to all go and complain.

They kept banging on about it all the way through, and really detracted from the whole thing.

One of my great regrets is that I never just told them to go and have their miserable time (which they were evidently determined to have) elsewhere and leave the rest of us to enjoy ourselves in peace.

Well put - the transatlantic to my mind is a shakedown cruise simple as that

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me much. There are just TONS of people here who freely mix terminology...these people were probably taken in by that. Its a lot like getting people to understand the difference between a gratuity and a service charge.

When it comes to ships there is a Maiden Voyage, a Christening, and an Inaugural Voyage. Top that off with the marketing folks talking about an "Inaugural Season", mix in some private TA/VIP only cruises, and its no surprise that LICs get confused.

What are ya gonna do?

We had someone like that on our Jewel inaugural sailing from Dover to the USA. They started the first night, when we held our informal get together griping (actually it was her) about the hotel accomodations NCL used in London, then the tranfers. From there they griped about the tour we all did together in Ireland. After that, the cancelled port due to weather, etc. Luckily, with the exception of one other person I think everyone pretty much just let her rant. The one person who did side with her was just fine until Mrs Grabby got started. I too wish I would have said something.

The ones I for sure avoid are those where in the roll call 95% of the posts have been about private tours.

For me a roll call is about sharing news and discussions about this specific cruise and itinerary which are not suitable for the main cruise line board. Not so much about making "friends".

I would disagree and say that excursions are specific to that particular cruise. And I wouldn't want to be on a private excursion with someone who wasn't friendly. And most first time or infrequent cruisers like to see a familiar face around the ship during the voyage - like ones they may meet at the M&G.

In my experience, of the M&G list you see on your roll call no more than maybe 60% will show up. Last week on Breakaway we had probably 50% of the 70 or so people who said they'd show up--if that. But this seems to be the norm with M&Gs.

I agree that we use the roll call to set up private tours with others from the roll call.

Also, we have done cabin crawls and got to see lots of cabin categories. It was great.

I remember reading somewhere that sitting down at your M&G should be avoided--it is best to stand and mingle and not just sit with one group.

I agree with you. Roll calls are the ideal place to make plans for excursions with those you are going to be cruising with whether it be through NCL or privately. :)

I agree with yu and others who enjoy planning the excursions with M&G folk. We have met some nice people and enjoyed their company on private excursions.

[quote name=biker@sea;

I have done about 20 M&Gs I crashed more than 1/2.

I sail last minute and have posted in a roll call the night before it sailed " just booked see you all at the M&G "

I like to see who the driver is' date=' who's cookin, and who's yellin It's BINGO TIME .

I have also found many a C.C. member to be in my "twenty"

You Know. Some how out of 2000/3000/people on board there will be about twenty people you see over and over again, Meet, hang with, Etc.

I have personally meet a few hundred C.C. members and can put a face to a lot of fellow posters. ( I Like That) Many that we keep in touch with and hope to sail with again.

I do try to participate even if I only have a handful of post in a roll call. :D
