Wanderista Posted March 31, 2016 #1 Share Posted March 31, 2016 Hi there, I do have a general beginner question that isn't cruiseline specific. I skimmed a little bit of that really long thread about lanyards at one point. Do you have to buy a lanyard separately? Can you buy one on the ship? Where else is good to buy them? Is the pass just handed to you as a loose card if you don't have a lanyard? Dumb question, but the ship pass/key card is definitely waterproof, right? I really love swimming and I anticipate that I will spend a fair amount of time both on the ship pool deck and on the beach out in the water. I am thinking that a lanyard will be practical for this. It's not something that I'd probably ever use outside of a cruise but it sounds like a good idea for this purpose.
paul929207 Posted March 31, 2016 #2 Share Posted March 31, 2016 A lanyard is not included in your cruise fare. Yes, they are sold on the ship. On Princess they are often the trivia prize. They are waterproof.
Kamloops50 Posted March 31, 2016 #3 Share Posted March 31, 2016 Ships sell lanyards on board. We opted out and bought ours on shore in Alaska . Nicer looking and a lot cheaper.
Harry and Lucille Posted March 31, 2016 #4 Share Posted March 31, 2016 Have a drawer full of lanyards. Any work. Every time I get my card punched in the casino or at the passenger service desk, I have received a free lanyard.
cb at sea Posted March 31, 2016 #5 Share Posted March 31, 2016 I just carry a small purse, for my lipstick, tissues, comb, etc....too far to keep running back to the cabin for "touch ups"! Hubby keeps his card in his pocket!
KirkNC Posted March 31, 2016 #6 Share Posted March 31, 2016 I just keep my card in my pocket as well.
Langley Cruisers Posted March 31, 2016 #7 Share Posted March 31, 2016 Dollar store. :)
GUT2407 Posted March 31, 2016 #8 Share Posted March 31, 2016 Some lines will give them out, maybe only to some passengers. I think all lines sell them. You can buy them at most cheep Pete's stores and office supply stores.
Wanderista Posted March 31, 2016 Author #9 Share Posted March 31, 2016 Thanks for the replies and ideas! I know that people do not like others to "hog" the chairs with their stuff while doing things like swimming so it would be a way to keep me from doing so. :)
LynnTTT Posted March 31, 2016 #10 Share Posted March 31, 2016 I bought a few on Amazon. One black, one turquoise (I wear that a lot) and one with rhinestones for formal night. I don't put my cruise card in a plastic cover; I take the card to the customer service desk and have them punch a hole in the corner

If ur cruising with Carnival u get a free one for every one in ur cabin when u board. U just have to go to the casino and get it.

You can find them in department stores like Walmart, Kmart, and Target. If you're a member of AAA, they also sell them. Sporting goods stores have them. Office supply stores, like Staples, sell them. Lanyards are not hard to find. Yes, the ship's gift shops have them, but selection is somewhat limited. It's been a long time since we've been on a RCCL ship, so I don't remember if they give out free lanyards or not. It may not be practical to wear a lanyard while swimming. You might want to leave it wrapped in your beach towel, or tucked in a book like a book marker.
crystalspin Posted April 1, 2016 #13 Share Posted April 1, 2016 Have got my lanyards on eBay -- rhinestones and not. If you get the kind with the pocket you have to take your card out to hand to bar server; if you get the kind with the clip you have to take the lanyard off over your head to get a drink (or fight with the clip). Here's a fact: I wear my cell phone in a neck wallet on vacation because it is my only camera. My lanyard-worn card-key kept getting "demagnetized" so it wouldn't open the door, and front desk kept telling me it was the phone. Flatly, I didn't believe that a phone in airline mode could do that... but just for a lark, I attached my sailcard to a keychain that I clipped to my waistband... and sure enough, no more demagnetizing episodes. So whether in your pocket or around your neck, just make it NOT where you also have your phone.
LynnTTT Posted April 1, 2016 #14 Share Posted April 1, 2016 I have lanyards from Carnival and another cruise line. When I took a Celebrity cruise, I discovered they don't provide them free; you can buy one . So I wore my Carnival lanyard down to the Customer Service desk and asked them for a Celebrity lanyard, which they graciously gave me so as to avoid me wearing the Carnival one! I also don't know that I'll want to leave the Kindle unattended while I'm not watching it. Good ideas, though!

No, they are not free - for sale in the gift shop, in several different colors and some with rhinestones.

Cruisin' Chick Posted April 2, 2016 #20 Share Posted April 2, 2016 As others have said, if you want to use one, you can easily find them for sale at many stores from Walmart to Staples. Last summer, my daughter bought one at Hot Topic and then a few weeks later, each freshman at her college orientation got one to use for their student ID. She put her ID on the one she bought and gave me her college one.

Rare MicCanberra Posted April 2, 2016 #22 Share Posted April 2, 2016 Travel agents sometimes provide a lanyard with the paperwork and luggage tags.
ChinchillaGrl Posted April 2, 2016 #23 Share Posted April 2, 2016 Be aware that tucking the key card in the cover of your e-book may demagnetize the card so that it won't work. First day of our last cruise a general announcement was made advising all of the issue. Easy to get it reset, but there were MASSES of people at guest services needing attention!
