Early to Bed Confession

I'm not saying I'm pleasant to be around and it takes two strong coffee to make me even resemble human , but I just don't sleep. I have tried everything from meditation to diazepam and nothing works. I wasn't always like that though ... Apparently as a baby I would sleep for 8 hours through the night from birth and I struggled to get up for school as a child but about 10 years ago I became seriously ill and I've not slept through the night since ...

As for the other question on age .. I'm 42 apparently but on the inside I'm still 21 :D .

I'm so sorry to hear that (about your illness). Serious illness can change a person, I understand. I hope you are well now. :)

Oh I am of the age for this but not the temperament. I plain don't do mornings. I see no reason to supervise the sun coming up -- it comes up fine without me. I start to function somewhere around 10 AM (or not). I really wake up and loving it at about 11 --PM that is. On cruises easy to get into the go to bed about 10 PM routine. I just don't adjust the mindset and leave the watch on home time. I laughed at a post once that wanted equality for all hours! Morning hours are not better or more saintly just a preference -- like staying up to 2 AM. This attitude did not work well for me-- I was an elementary school teacher and they (school officials) declared that I must be there at 7:15 for breakfast duty FOR 24 YEARS! Not now.

While I've never been an early riser except by necessity I have been a night owl at various phases of my life. Now, in my mid-70s I find myself enjoying the heavenly beds probably more than I should. And I enjoy myself.

Go to bed early. Rise early. Wake up in the middle of the night. As long as you nap, it all works.

I can't believe that there was a time when I fought napping. If I had it to do all over again, I'd OWN those kindergarten naps.

We are in our 70's and never go to bed before midnight or 1am. Love the late dining but do notice that the Hal ships we have been on are really quiet after 10pm. We cruise with different cruise companies - including Carnival, RCI, and Princess etc. Each cruise offers something unique and different that we enjoy.

I'm a early riser and a night owl rolled into one ... I can be up in the gym by 7a.m but still be up dancing till midnight and chatting by the pool till 3a.m ... And I can't do the napping on a lounger bit either ... I have a profound fear of running out of time to fit in everything I want to do in life so I just keep going till I fall over , lol

I'm like you. I go to sleep after 3am and can be up anytime after 6 or 7 am. I've always been most creative in the wee hours. I wish HAL would have a few "night owl" activities.

For me....early riser here even though I'm retired. I retired to the beach so once I get my coffee in the morning, I am out hitting the beach for a power walk before it gets too hot/humid. I am also a napper, only about an hour......but oh it makes such a big difference at night. I am 62 years young today and be active on the cruise during the day, take my siesta, have a late dinner sitting, and then off to party......whatever that might mean.

Boy, this thread is providing a boat-load of justification to HAL's ghost-ship-after-10 p.m. reputation. :)

I think that's why I like the Koningsdam as there was still plenty going on till late ... Saying that on all our HAL cruises we've managed to find others like us to stay up late and party with. On the Noordam the CD went to bed one night and left us in charge of the music and that was with a group ranging in ages from 21 to 84!

Mr Chew & I would both stay out later if there were more to do ... we like to eat around 7/7:30 and then go to the later show if it's something we think we'd like. I don't go into the casino any more because of the smoke; I don't want to go to bed with my hair smelling like an ashtray. Mr Chew may go for a little while, but there's not a lot of action post-10 pm. (this applies mostly to HAL, not the other cruises we've had)

Neither one of us is a really early riser, no matter how late we were up the night before ...

Same! I'm still fighting them. I'd be able to go enjoy that nightlife the young and young at heart enjoy!

I love the way you put how I feel. The early bird may catch the worm, but I have no need for worms, so no reason to get up early. I make it to breakfast just as they are closing Lido down.

On a HAL ship I am just finishing dinner about 10:00 PM. Then, if it's something interesting, off to the show. After that I'm wide awake, and ready for fun! Out of the showroom to find---nothing. Lounges are quiet, as the musicians are on break. Keep going to the next lounge to find---nothing.

There was a time the last lounge didn't even open until 11:00 PM! Those were good days, and made me come to love HAL.

So, what's a girl to do but give up and head for bed long before midnight. If HAL wants me to spend money, please create an opportunity!

RuthC I hope you and the others who enjoy a nice late night (early morning) bedtime make these comments on your reviews because it seems from the various threads ice read it's the late night "party" people they are trying to attract. If they want to succeed, they have to offer the venue!

It all depends what is going on the next day. If it is a port that we really enjoy we go to bed early so we get enough rest. If it is a sea day I may stay up watching the t.v. , DH can roll over and go right to sleep no matter what time. But the first night I can sleep early as it may have been an exciting day and full.

We, too, retire early, and are in our late 60's. We cruise for itinerary and are up early on port days, early room service, to be ready for excursions and exploring. I think I may have overdone the ports on our last cruise, Western Europe & Norse Legecnds, because DH said he never wanted to take another cruise:( (we shall see!)

On sea days I like to attend morning Mass at 8 A.M. I do allow DH to sleep in:).

Karen

Can I take my coffee to Mass? If I can I would go with you. Oh wait.....I have to do my hair and change out of jammies too huh?

You may not want me to go with you without doing all my prep work.

Hear! Hear! Ruth

I wake up early naturally. But sometimes I want to stay up, especially if the next day is a sea day or a later arrival in port. But if there's nothing to do after 11 except dance to the latest hits, that doesn't interest me. How much would be involved in maybe doing a late night movie? I often find myself going back to my cabin to watch one. I would enjoy going to one in the theatre.

I'm with you.......but add 20 yrs. I never had a problem staying up late until I had a serious illness 3 yrs ago. Am fully recovered but the body really took a hit from it......and now a nap is required everyday or i can get pretty bitchy.

I've been a night owl my entire life. I can supervise the moon while the rest of you see to the sun! DH is just the opposite. :-)

I don't really require late-night partying or gambling, but do like to have conversations in an attractive venue. I trust those are available on-board? Can always order snacks from room service. Have also been looking at the DVD library on the Prinsendam, which can also keep me entertained when others are sleeping. Can Perhaps organize a movie party in a stateroom or two?

The older I get the less inclined I am to stay up really late "partying", but I tend to burn the candle and both ends in day to day life. Once in a blue moon I conk out by 9PM, very rarely. usually closer to midnight at home. On vacation I enjoy when things are active to 11pm-midnight.

I am 47 and I do my best work between 10am and 7pm. Unfortunately life dictates that I rise at 6am although I too see no need to supervise the sunrise. On a cruise I like to pack in a full day so that means an early night. I'm ok with that.

I do appreciate the fact that HAL ships are quiet at night so I don't hear people talking/yelling in the hallways etc.

Someday I'd like to have enough vacation time to have a 'nap' and not think I'd missed something....

For the later owls I do think it would be great if they had a 'Cruise Director of the Nightwatch' to do stuff.....or call it ClubHalNoir. Clearly there is a segment of the guests that would be interested in a program like that geared to whatever....just make it later and market it.

I get up at 425 am for work. Getting up at 600 to make it down to the dining room for 700 is a luxurious sleep in.

In real life I'm in bed by 900pm so I guess getting to bed by 1000pm on cruises is pushing my 43 year old limits.

The most noise I've ever encountered on HAL was at a Mariners luncheon on a 21 day cruise when the captain made a remark about having been told about "all the wild parties" on the voyage. The hysterical laughter was deafening [emoji2]

I love HAL. I get a good sleep every night. Even looked up the mattresses on their site.

I just turned 40 and have been sailing with HAL for almost 10 years. I am not a night owl. I enjoy going to bed early and getting up early to start enjoying my day. We also like the port intensive cruises so we can learn as much as we can about new places.
