I didn't vote as there was no "other" category.

I don't think I would report someone smoking on their balcony if it was just one quick cigarette while I was out on my balcony. But I do think I would if it was a chain smoker. The chain smoking bothers me much more than someone just smoking one cigarette. I can deal with the wafting smoke coming my way for a short time, but if someone is out there for hours at a time lighting up one right after the other then yes I would probably report them as I do enjoy reading for a couple of hours most afternoons on my balcony and don't care to be smelling a neighbor's smoke the entire time. Before the smoking ban took effect there was nothing a non-smoker could do about a smoker chain smoking on their balcony, but now that there is a ban we can report them and hopefully something would be done about it.

They are not yet totally smoke free but have the most restrictive rules (i.e. no smoking in interior places). They definately seem to be moving in that direction though.

I like the "interior spaces" rule. It makes a lot of sense. It would certainly mean the casino would be a lot nicer to walk through and I might even stay awhile if it was smoke-free.

I believe some cruise lines have tried the "no smoking" cruise and it didn't go over well for the cruise lines as far as profit....

Well, sorta. Carnival Paradise attempted this at a time when 23% of Americans smoked. The idea was scrapped in 2003 when, according to press releases from Carnival, the ship wasn't profitable.

But there was larger issue about that experiment you'll probably never read in the articles from back then. Profits weren't the main problem. Carnival's biggest problem was, they couldn't maintain a crew of just under 1000 that didn't smoke. I was right there in the room when I heard a Carnival Corp exec say it.

I would only report it if it was chain smoking and really interfering with my use of a balcony. I used to smoke- luckily it was when you could still smoke on your balcony- but I generally would not smoke if I knew somebody on the balconies next to ours was outside. If I was already smoking and they came outside, I would ask them if they minded.

The crew live on the ship and should be allowed to smoke in designated non-public areas. That's not a good enough excuse for not having a smoke free ship.

Welcome to Corporate America. 😁

Decisions often only make sense to the executives who make them and the people who benefit from them.

I currently have the right to smoke in designated areas. As to the outright ban I hope you are correct.

You don't have the "right" to smoke, you have the availability/opportunity to smoke in a designated area if you chose to do so. That opportunity is "permitted" by the cruise line, not endowed by your creator.

I'm not saying "Don't Smoke", that's your choice. In fact, I'm glad to see some ships are putting out seating, umbrellas, tables and ash receptacles for smokers. No need to herd them into a small stand up space.

Re: E cigarettes. At least they don't have the smell of regular cigarettes, so on a balcony, one could probably get away with vaping an e-cig, especially if the ship is moving, the vape disappears very quickly.

I wouldn't report them unless it was constant. On our last cruise there were people smoking pot on the deck above us. It was only twice and we just went back in the cabin for 10 minutes so the smell would go away. Should I have reported that? Probably

I'd report them in a New York minute. It has nothing to do with my personal acceptance of smokers, but the selfishness of not wanting a fire on-board. (despite how unlikely it may be)

Slightly related, while in port in Long Beach, the guy operating the fuel bunker was enjoying a cig while refueling the Splendor beneath our balcony...

That crap got reported in a New York second!!ImageUploadedByForums1467406928.294543.jpg.6e4ce4900578a5562ce50b53d442056b.jpg

Good for you! I'm glad you did that especially when it's plastered all over the refueling rig "NO SMOKING ALLOWED!" Heck, drive up to any gas station and it says the same thing!

Until they explode or otherwise combust.

nope , if someone had one once in awhile , say first thing in the morning , that wouldnt bother me , but if they where out there 24/7 I would have a chat with them and ask them slow it down or go to a smoking section. I like to think of myself as a mature adult who can solve her own problems with out running and telling

I just hope you have a reasonable person next to you and not someone who is belligerent or will curse you out. You never can tell...

I agree with you, LMaxwell. The cleaning fee should be for a first offense. The second offense should result in Disembarkation.

I agree. There need to be a penalty to make people listen to the RULES.

You will set yourself up for a good confrontation. Your neighbor already knows that there's a no smoking policy on balconies and only in designated areas. If the smoke is coming into my space then I will turn them in and save myself the confrontation. I can't afford to be knocked in the head. I do have a tendency to drop a few "F" bombs and it's not good for my blood pressure either. I'll make security earn their money, and if they take care of the problem they'll get a nice bonus from me.

And if they happen to be a-holes, they could make your cruise miserable.

Best to let Carnival handle it and enforce their rule.

It was right after they implemented the rule on Carnival. I was on my balcony, in port, leaning on the railing and my neighbor came out. Cig in hand and looks at me...."you mind?"....I told him I didn't, it doesn't bother me. I asked him to do me a favor, if he sees my wife out here, she hates it, so get rid of it....you do that and be considerate to my wife, I wont say a word....there were a few times the neighbor and his wife were on balcony smoking, my wife went out on our balcony, they literally put it out right away with apologies....we got along great with them for a week. Even hung out with them a few nights for cocktails....are some people confrontational idiots, sure. Most people I find are willing to compromise and are cordial....give it a try, it may work as opposed to playing the gestapo tactics, calling GS, and not trying to talk to people to work out a compromise

You chose to compromise and work out a solution you could live with. No one else is obligated to compromise in this circumstance however. I just thought you should be made aware of that point.

Best-

Steve

I am well aware of that point. I made a recommendation, not a decree. As an adult, I like to own what I do, not act like a school age tattletale and hide anonymously behind security. I do realize that is an option tho
