This sudden change is disappointing. While I'm ok with Pepsi products I am not ok with the pricing of bottled water packages onboard. Water is necessary, no? My BF drinks loads of bottled water as he is not a coffee/tea drinker or a huge fan of soft drinks. It's kind of like NCL saying "Folks .. no oxygen is allowed onboard and you'll have to buy a package." Of course there's water available onboard but it's not the same thing when served in a cup. My hope is that the pricing for the bottled water packages drops. Of course that's like saying horses will fly too. Very pissed NCL... ):

 

No its not! Water is free. Just bring your own water bottle.

Bottom line for us, based on amount of canned soft drink my wife consumes on a 7 day cruise, cruise cost will increase $84. I guess either accept it as the increased cost of cruising....or figure that difference is no longer worth the value of cruising. It's happened.

 

Your posting just brought to mind an interesting problem with reversing this policy. If your number is representative of those that carry on product then if the % of people that carry on product is relatively small, then the number of complaints and cancellation will not be enough to reverse. If the number is large enough to make a material change in bookings then the revenue change from the policy is also large and will make them less likely to change it back.

 

Once they announce the change, most of the ill will they will get from the decision will occur immediately. Most of the damage they will take will occur immediately. Most of the PR damage will stick, even if they reverse the decision.

 

They will be unlike to change the policy unless they see a reduction in bookings and an increase in cancellations materially above what their models project will happen by such a change. They will have produced models that will project changes in revenue, costs, bookings, etc to project the impact of the change, based upon customer and competitive data. Unless it is shown that those models are dramatically wrong they will not change the policy.

 

The one case that people point to where a change was rolled back, was the one were they tried to prevent food being taken back to the rooms. With that policy there were two major differences 1. It was unique in the cruise industry. No one else had such a policy or even one anywhere close. 2. It was impossible to enforce. No real way to keep people from taking food out of the buffet and some other venues.

 

I suspect that it was the inability to enforce that led to its demise. A company looks rather dumb to have a policy that is very annoying to its customers that is both unique among its competition and cannot be enforced.

 

In that case of the carry on of drinks, they do have a mechanism to enforce.

And there is no mention of the fact that the policy goes into effect when passengers already booked and in penalty phases will be affected.

 

Also doesn't mention that very few (VERY few) passengers who are 'pre-penalty' seem to be notified.

 

MANY who are pre-penalty have stated they have not yet received "the email" from NCL.

 

We have more than 5 future cruises booked with NCL, but none are yet in penalty phases.

 

And we have heard NOTHING directly from NCL about this.

I don't notice many packs of water and soda being lugged to the terminal on all my cruises. I am sure the percentages are very low the number of passengers that do carry on these items.

 

I have carried on in the past soda and water but it's not worth the hassle anymore. With UBP and drinkable water in the cabin and other areas of the ship there is no need for me to carry on

 

Most people on here just looking for something to complain about. If they don't like the policy go to another cruise line. It's that simple.

It's all adding up for many and that may be the result. (I always brought my soda on in my carry-on bag or I checked it with the porter so you weren't too likely to see it, and if the percentages are "so low" why would NCL bother to make the change? I would say that the number is substantial and they calculated what it was potentially costing them, probably overlooking the fact that rather than pay the higher prices onboard most people would choose an option that didn't cost anything.)

Another straw on the camels back, is anyone really surprised?

 

When the free perks disappear, and they will, everyone gloating I don't care cause I have this and that package will be singing a different song. These changes really are too much. Not because it adds that much to the cruise cost but because they are adding up one on top of another.

Just curious....I have always ordered distilled water ahead for my CPAP machine..through the special needs dept/access.....will that still be done..??? I do not want to have to carry a gallon onboard :eek:

If you have a company with multiple ships leaving on multiple cruises on a weekly basis, how are you ever going to have nobody in penalty phase? The policy was defined, the starting point was defined, and people directly (immediately) affected seem to have been notified. I would think others will be notified over time.

 

If anyone shows up on the dock on the 15th with beverages to bring on-board, then someone wasn't notified. Otherwise, everyone found out.

Just curious as to where all the posts (with pictures - too easy to claim one was received when one wasn't) of Refund Confirmation Letters for the CruiseNext \ FCC are????

 

Throwing it out there that over the last 5 days MANY have stood in solidarity that this was how NCL would listen and allow refunds beyond the 30 days that the T&Cs allow.....

 

 

I sent an email today to my PCC. I'll post when I get a reply....or when I don't! I asked specifically about the possibility of a refund due to the changes in policies in the time since I bought the FCC's.

And it gives the impression that Carnival has the same policy without mentioning the very reasonable amount of $4 for 12 waters and that cans are still allowed .

And was it mentioned it took 4 days to post this bad news ?

If you have a company with multiple ships leaving on multiple cruises on a weekly basis, how are you ever going to have nobody in penalty phase? The policy was defined, the starting point was defined, and people directly (immediately) affected seem to have been notified. I would think others will be notified over time.

 

If anyone shows up on the dock on the 15th with beverages to bring on-board, then someone wasn't notified. Otherwise, everyone found out.

 

They have acknowledged that they are sending the notifications in "batches".

How long does it take to send "batches", one for each sailing, or better yet, just a blast email just like the *multiple* blast emails that we get for every little 'special' they are offering...

They find these easy enough to send out en masse!

 

AND they are still letting people make *new* reservations without knowledge of the new policy.

I just looked at My Vacation Summary for 2017... then the FAQ;

 

What can't I bring onboard?

Passenger is not allowed to bring on board the vessel any alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages of any kind including water, soda and juices, firearms, weapons of any kind, ammunition, explosive substances or any goods of a dangerous nature,

nor animals of any kind, except service or guide animals, provided the passenger notifies Carrier prior to the cruise of his intention to bring such animal and agrees to take sole responsibility for any expense, damage, injuries or losses associated with or caused by such animal.

Unsealed food items will not be allowed onboard.

 

It just seems queer, that NCL finds water and firearms (in the same sentence) just as offensive.:rolleyes:

I went to their Facebook page and complained, however, they immediately deleted my post.

 

Gotta say, why wouldn't they? If you posted something negative about me on my page, I would delete it as well.expecting them to leave negative comments up is silly. Come on. How many companies leave up derogatory stuff? None that are paying attention.

I took my first cruise of any sort this past May on the 10-day Pearl to Alaska. Had a great time and miss the ship tremendously. Since getting home I've been pondering my next cruise - I really don't care about anywhere else but Alaska - I've been to enough tropical islands, been to Europe, been to Asia. Since the cruise I've been to the NCL page several times pondering the 14-day Sun cruise to Alaska for next May, leaving from San Francisco. Sounds great. Have almost signed up at least twice.

 

I've now made up my mind. I'll find a different cruise line. If NCL had a complete variety of sodas on board the ship (instead of just a limited selection of Pepsi products) I would probably not care much. To Alaska we took a 12-pack of Coke Zero and another of Diet Mt. Dew. It worked out well.

 

I probably sound petty. Oh well.... NCL's loss. I spent about $8000 with NCL on the cruise I took. If the few dollars they lost by not selling me (or others) any soda is hurting them they are on pretty shaky ground.

 

C'est la vie...

Contacting the access desk 60 to 90 days ahead of sailing is all well and good for those who have that time. People who sail within that time frame are just SOL then. :/ I will be bringing a factory sealed gallon of distilled water for my husbands bi-pap machine. Fortunately this seems to be something I should not get any grief for, and should not need pre-approval to do.

I just received a voice mail on my cell from someone at NCL responding to my email to Andy Stuart over the weekend.

 

The lady clearly did NOT read the contents of my email since she kept pausing throughout her message trying to figure out what to say and simply stated I can purchase the bottled water once I'm onboard.

 

Had they actually read my email, they would have seen that I advised them that I cannot drink just any bottled water due to medical reasons and why would they risk a passenger's health?

 

I'm so pissed about this because we booked this cruise in Feb 2015 and our final payment was this past weekend! If we did not have others cruising with us (they booked through a 3rd party site and would have had a 15% cancellation penalty as they had to make final payment earlier this month), we would have sooooooooooo canceled this cruise in September!! This was just the last straw for us on top of ALL the other changes/increases that have taken place since we booked.

 

We've already decided we are not spending one extra penny on this cruise. My hubby always gets in on the casino tournaments, but he said not this time. This will be our 1st and LAST cruise with this darn cruise line!! :mad::mad:

 

Urgggg...I feel my blood pressure rising as I type this! Oh and by the way.............not one single email from NCL to us about this change!!

Or people just break the rules because they feel like they are above everyone else and bring their cases and argue during check in.

 

They will hold up the lines and make it miserable for everyone else behind them.

 

I am so glad they make people after the cruise to fight for their DSC. Helps free up the annoying people at the customer service desk for other people that have legitimate issues.

Lately NCL has not exactly been the winner on price and after the last couple a yawn cruises, my family was not exactly making them a priority in our searches. After this little stunt, we are just going to drop them altogether. Def a $$$ issue with them. I do not drink alcohol or much soda, so the canned tea drinks (go Arizona!) I carry on are the only thing I have outside of water which I just take in the buffet. If this is enough money for them to play this game, will take my money elsewhere.

 

If everyone remembers the interview that their CEO did awhile back on the news (long story) he was very clear that the bar was a major revenue source and basically let it be known that non-power drinkers were not very desirable customers.

 

Think the other lines are going to watch the fall out on this to see if they will copy it. If you are sailing NCL anytime outside of the cancellation penalty window and can move to another line, DO IT, as a community service to all cruisers. Mass cancellations are the only message these companies understand. If enough people drop them, all of the lines will think twice about this BS. If the real reason is the concern over the employees slinging overly heavy bags full of bottled water (like these companies care about staff...), make the price of water on the ship reasonable. I would pay more onboard just to not have to mess with packing it but I will not pay 'bar' prices for water on a cruise. Should be able to pre-order a case of it for no more than double the supermarket price.

Again, there is no need to bring distilled water for your husbands machine. They will provide it for you on board at no charge.

I did read that even before the policy change was sent out. I would rather be sure to have the gallon with us rather than take a chance one doesn't end up in our cabin.

Publicity is what NCL got - and they are getting plenty of exposure ...

 

I couldn't care less about posts being deleted on NCL's official FB & Twitter accounts as that's under their command :p :eek:

 

However, what we post and share on ours, telling our F&F circles of what we think - that's our choice and there's nothing that NCL can do about it ... and, others are free to do it or nothing at all. Good news often go unnoticed but bad news ... even faster and spread wilder.

 

No its not! Water is free. Just bring your own water bottle.

Until NCL decides it's time to ban the possession and use of water bottles, for your health, safey and their convenience :mad: - as alleged in one of the thread that disappeared overnight - not to mention, someone's bottom line margins. :rolleyes:

 

I predict that, in the not near distant future - like beverages, carry-on luggage will be limited to 7 or 10 kg per passenger to speed up embarkation for your/their ... (yeah, refer to your cruise document's contract for T&C) Something that many Euro & Asia LCC frequent fliers are familiar with.

 

Or, be banned. Or, only allowed if fees are prepaid in advance.

 

Excessive luggage will ... $$$. Ka Ching

 

Not going to happened with upscale NCL - better think again. The stock has a long, long way to climb at today's closing price. Go ahead, flame on.
