Sydney Cruise Ship Drug Bust!

Recommended Posts

Yes Bodog, just seen this on the News on telly. Funnily enough, was thinking of this case earlier this afternoon and wondering how it was going and planning to ask here on CC if anyone had heard anything. Arrived home and booted up and ... LOL cha-ching! The CC Factor just keeps on keeping on.

(quote from ABC article) The court heard Lagace had been attempting to repay a debt, and was convinced to courier the drugs after meeting some people on a two-month round-the-world cruise. (end of quote)

I find this part of her story hard to believe. The group boarded in Dover with tickets to go to Sydney, then on to Fremantle. I am convinced she and her room-mate went on the ship as couriers, not that they were approached on board to carry the drugs. Why did they go on to Fremantle? Most people booking a cruise all the way from the UK would be happy to go as far as Sydney. I think it was so they could take the drugs ashore in Brisbane on a port call where there is no checking, rather than in Sydney at the end of the cruise.

Even stranger that you can afford a two month cruise when you’re so in debt that you need to become a drug mule.

I'm sure she's not the innocent model she claims to be. More like a pretty party girl whom owed her drug dealer money and was "advised" to do this to pay off her drug debts. Someone knew what they were doing and paid for the 3 pawns to carry out the plan. She did the crime, she can do the time.

With her sentence of 4.5 years non parole, makes you wonder what the others will get.

If convicted, I reckon 7 to 10 years, they are pleading not guilty. The ex porn star turned drug courier - I prefer to call them drug smugglers, would have received a discounted sentence for pleading guilty and maybe providing information to the Police re others allegedly involved.

What amazes me is the amount of money the drug barons must have paid out to put those 3 people on Sea Princess for a couple of months, bet they did not have an inside cabin. I trust they paid their automatic gratuities before the 'bracelets' were snapped on.

In my previous life, when we nailed the Colombian Drug Smugglers at Sydney Airport, they generally got 7 years in the 'Big House,' aka 'The Long Bay Hilton.'

Earlier this year we were on a cruise that called into NZ. Our cabin was selected for a random drug check. I was chatting to the police officer while the dog did a check of our cabin. We were on the Sea Princess so I mentioned this case. I put forward my theory that the drug mules intended to take the drugs off when the ship called into Brisbane. He laughed and asked me if I wanted a job. I also said that there were two young women and two men in the group, but one man got "spooked" and disembarked from the ship before Sydney.

I’d say you’re close Uncle Les, probably 25% discount for an early plea. That’s the norm. If she gave information a bit more even. then usual non parole ( unless there are special circumstances is 2/3rds).

I notice that up thread you said 7.

I never did like that 'plea bargaining' mate. Another policy we inherited from the 'Land of the Free.' But then we don't have the capacity in the prisons to keep many of them in for life, all about rehabilitation. Anyway when this Legace girl gets out of Silverwater, she could get a job on the cruise ships as a guest lecturer...subject 'My life as a Sea Princess Drug Smuggler.':evilsmile:

Over there you can actually reach an agreement I’ll plead if I get x years.

Here you get a discount for pleading guilty and saving the cost of a trial and putting the victim through the trauma involved. Now some victims want, yea even need, the trial and I think they should have some say, but then I guess those who need it get to make an impact statement.

For an early plea you’re still in the hand of the judge. I knew one bloke who was told he was looking at 16 at trial, 12 on a plea, he took the plea, judge gave him 20 less 25% so 15. Didn’t really appreciate it.

Maybe they could have a reality show. Jail birds staring Cassie, Schapelle and these 2. Oh wait. Let's not give Chanel 10 any ideas.

I think there is a similar show already called Banged up abroad.

The tv show Prisoner was never that "pretty"

None of them were models turned drug mules though.

Always wondered about the term "drug mule".

Do you think its a reference to the mule's ability to carry a load or their inability to breed?[emoji12]
