Constellation in dry Dock May 2017

I heard from my travel agent over the weekend that there was a press conference planned for tomorrow to announce the details of the drydock.

Just heard from her again this morning, the press conference has now been moved to Monday 8th May.

Seems to be a little late in the day to be finalising the plans, making me nervous being on the 26th May sailing!

Having a press conference doesn't imply that the company is still finalising plans but it does provide an opportunity to put rumours about what is being done to bed

Just off the Constellation several hours ago in Civitavecchia. Word is the refit will be five weeks in Barcelona. Many crew transferring to other ships for minimum two weeks. Last night during dinner in Ocean Liners we heard directly from a high up officer that the restaurant will be closed, possibly at some time during the cruise leaving later today. b85a62cc91e143a26e349c73d24f99b1.jpgCannot confirm that Quine is taking OL's spot on deck 3, tho' it makes sense corporately to move Tuscan Grill to 3 for the larger space, and put super-specialty Quine in the smaller space on 11.

In port this morning a crane was loading full size containers to the upper deck of the ship. Much of the behind the scenes equipment is being replaced - in the laundry and kitchens to name a few. During a meet n greet with the officers last night, they said we could book passage on today's departure if anyone desired.

Repositioning cruise from Abu Dhabi to Rome was fun, highlights being a day in Petra, the Suez Canal, a sunset sail past Santorini and a spectacular pass-by the volcano island Stromboli yesterday.

Refit cannot be 5 weeks as the ship sails on 26th May for Monaco. I wish these rumour mongers would desist and do some homework before making outrageous statements

I wouldn't worry. I'm thinking that the change in plans has more to do with the schedules for the press conference than anything else.

This confirms Ocean Liners as being no more (received tonight):

" Good Day,

The Celebrity Constellation just went thru a dry dock and the Ocean Liners Specialty Restaurant was removed and replaced with the popular Tuscan Grill which is an Italian steakhouse. All reservations that were booked in the Ocean Liners are in the process of being cancelled and the funds will be automatically refunded to the original form of payment. If you would like to rebook in the Tuscan Grill or any of the other specialty restaurants you can certainly do so. all based on availability. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We look forward to welcoming you onboard the Celebrity Constellation.

ETA: just noticed the informal 'thru' and other very relaxed email writing. Did they task the intern with this particular gem of a job?!

Yes, on Constellation now. Ocean Liners will be gone after May 6th, so before this cruise concludes.

Was told by a staff member today that crew who are not at the end of their contracts will actually be staying on the ship while it is in dry dock. They have to service the contractors who are coming on board to do the renovations. The contractors sleep onboard while they are working on the ship which was an interesting piece of info.

Many people here said they would have prefered a change to Murano instead.

While I am with them about not being happy about Qsine, I have to ask:

Why would they have changed Ocean Liners to Murano??? FYI: Both have the same menu.

I though that I preferred Murano to Tuscan, but when they changed Murano to Tuscan on the Summit, the food was very good with many choices. We also enjoy Qsine as it is different and fun. We really like tappas and eating a Qsine a couple of the times during the cruise gives you an opportunity to try many different food types. Like a trip around the globe!

Very interesting. On my cruise in November 2017 I can buy dinner at Cruise Liners. I'll cancel my package if this is correct, I don't want multiple nights in Qsine

You might want to recheck the website. Today it is only showing Tuscan and Qsine for the 11/27/17 cruise. I too am not happy with that change.

What will happen to the artwork and original wall panel from the Liner?

From X web site:

Built by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique eight years before SS Normandie, the SS Ile de France was one of the first Art Deco grande dames. She was also one of the first ocean liners to boast more beds than bunks, and passengers marveled at her soaring three-story-high dining room. Our Ocean Liners Restaurant is a celebration of that luxurious era of transatlantic crossings. The walls are lined with paintings of the SS Ile de France and other notable ships, and glass showcases of marine memorabilia capture the mystique of a bygone era.

We have Blu for our July cruise on the Constellation. We have never been on Celebrity before and I was wondering how good the Tuscan Grille was. The price seems high. The base price is $45, but you also have to pay another $15 to $18 for a dry aged steak. $63 extra over Blu seems high.

You will get differing opinions here on TG. In my experience it has been overall excellent. On Infinity I had the dry-aged steak and I thought is was very good. Not quite the same quality of a land-based premium steakhouse however.

It doesn't "seem high" it is high! We had our 1 and only Tuscan experience on Connie. We had a considerable discount offered to us on board so we took it. We thought the room was lovely, the service was nice, but the food was no better than a slightly upscale chain restaurant at home. We have never gone back and don't intend to. We've been offered even better discounts since and haven't been tempted. If you are Aqua, I'd strongly recommend saving the money since you already paid extra for Blu and you'll get the ambience and service there.

Thanks, if there is a weak menu night at Blu, maybe we'll try TG. I realize $60 a person isn't cheap, but the cruise ship steak house experience is nice, even if I can do better at Capital Grille or Morton's or even buying dry aged prime at Wegman's and grilling it myself.

I do to... but that wasn´t what I was saying! Especially because Tuscan was on Constellation before and will remain on Constellation. No change there (except for the switch in location)!

Ocean Liners is being replaced by Qsine. And some people here are saying they should have changed Ocean Liners to Murano - which doesn´t really make sence. Except for the interieur design they are the same - the menu is the same.

So why would Celebrity make a change like that? Then they could have left things as they were.

Yikes. What misinformation.

"Just went thru a dry dock" False.

Ocean Liners became Tuscan Grille. False.

Ate in OL 2 weeks ago for, sadly, the last time of at least 20 times in the 4 Ocean Liner restaurants. Talked to not a single person, and there were many, who thought the change to Qsine made a lick of sense.

And Murano may "have the same menu" but it doesn't approach the same feel. And as for the memorabilia in OL, it is being located to a "museum" outside the casino, according to several staff. Also a boneheaded idea. And don't forget "Sushi on 5" where we never saw more than a handful of people in the 30 days we were on Constellation.

For the specialties, discounts, as usual, abounded. Every day in the Ocean View they hawked reservations as well as every time we embarked ship in a port. You'd think they would get the idea that maybe, just maybe, if you reduced (actually returned) the price to what is acceptable ($25-30 PP), they wouldn't have to devote this time and effort. And probably fill the restaurants. But, alas, bean counters...

Well, that part is technically correct. Tuscan is / has moved to the location of Ocean Liners.

Qsine takes up the space previously used by OL.

Huh? You've just said that both Tuscan and Qsine will be in the Ocean Liners space.

They aren't. Tuscan is staying where it is and Qsine (and a bunch of new cabins) are going where Ocean Liners was located. That, at least, is what they told us on Constellation last week.

Well, not false, just poorly written. Which is what I went all terribly British back at them, and got this response (after saying I wasn't going to be eating in any of the other speciality restaurants:

"Good Day,

Our Sincerest Apologies for the late notice on the decision to replace Ocean Liners restaurant onboard the Celebrity Constellation. I do understand your disappointment with the decision to remove Ocean Liners along with the late notice. Until we have been given 100% confirmation from management about the change we are not allowed to relay the information. As soon as I got conformation I begin to contact and send out notices to all of the guest affected. Formal emails from Celebrity are being sent out to all of our guest affected. That email will be coming to you soon. If you would like to dine 1 night in any of the available specialty restaurants we will be happy to book it for you complimentary.

Best Regards,

TBH I am glass we are Aqua and get to eat in Blu.

Still haven't the formal email, but assuming that will be tomorrow with the press release. However I would've thought that sending out formal communications to affect guest BEFORE the press release would've made better customer service sense.

Still showing as booked and paid for in my itinerary/calendar online.
