Such sad news with the passing of Carrie Fisher and now a day later Debbie Reynolds, her mother. The HAL connection? Ms. Reynolds was Veendam's godmother, of course.

I Loved Debbie Reynolds & Eddie Fisher when I was a young girl & it broke my heart when they separated.. I collected all kinds of magazines about them & others in that era..

 

Wonder if HAL will do something special on the Veendam in Debbie's memory..

I was worried about Debbie's age and fragile health in light of her daughters death and now this terrible news. I didn't know she was godmother of the Veendam.

I heard Carrie speak at a professional conference about five years ago. She spoke on mental health and substance abuse and what stories she told. The audience members were spellbound listening to stories about her tumultuous childhood, early substance abuse, bipolar disorder, ECT and psychiatric drug treatments. She led a tortured yet triumphant life. RIP mother and daughter.

Very sad news. I loved her in "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" when I was a kid. Thoughts and prayers to family and friends.

I was privileged to see Debbie a number of times in the SF Bay Area over the years and was impressed how she had overcome so many adversities in life.

 

Earlier this month, the San Francisco Symphony performed the musical score to Singin' In the Rain while the movie played on the big screen. It was a wonderful evening, and little did we know what would transpire with Debbie and Carrie in a matter of a few weeks.

So saddened and shocked.

 

I, too, loved Debbie Reynolds as a young child. I remember having Debbie Reynolds paper dolls. And, I too, remember being so saddened when Eddie Fisher left her for Liz Taylor. He was not well thought of after that!

 

We've cruised on the Veendam twice and seeing her name on the ship brought back memories of her movies and music.

Anyone know how ship's "godmothers" get chosen? Looking back at 1996 when Debbie ( always Tammy to me) was chosen she was in a comic movie called "Mother" and she had appeared in prior episodes of the Love Boat - what was her connection to HAL?
