If NCL offered completely non-smoking cruises, would you book?

If secondhand smoke was contained in the smoking areas, you'd have a point. The fact that secondhand smoke travels to other areas (which are non-smoking) is a problem.

Right this is exactly my take. I'm asthmatic and I'm all for smokers having a place to enjoy their cruise too. But it does travel. Like on the breakaway. I'd definitely take a non smoking cruise, save myself the hassle and keep everyone happy

Yes and Yes

There has definitely been an increase in smoke in the casinos since the ban on balcony smoking. I know that the casinos have lost some revenue because of this. Think of it this way. If a person does not want to be around a lot of smoke for whatever reason they may avoid the casino. Now if a smoker goes into a non-smoking casino they will not leave due to lack of smoke. I know myself that I have left the casino because of to much smoke. The casino wants me and actually when they see me coming they make the table I am heading for a non-smoking table before I even sit down. Even with this extra treatment I still have to leave at times.

I am all for smokers having their own spaces. Public areas though like the casino should not be a mix of both though. If the staff would not allow the non playing smokers to smoke then that would be a different story. Unfortunately the casino has become a smokers lounge playing or not.

The problem is the Casinos on the Mega ships like the BA are so poorly built, the Dawn Class and Jewel Class ships have enclosed casinos that can be easily avoided.

The biggest problem I see is who is going to wait on you and make your beds since most of the crew smokes? We are friends with many many NCL employees and 99% of them are smokers. All that being said my answer is no and no. If you want smoke free Celebriy is a good bet. I'll take the NCL crew over any other cruise line any day. I think the new smoking policy is very fair.

I would not go out of my way to get on a smoke free cruise. Im good with the way things are.

As for the casino, what I can tell you from our last cruise on the Escape is that the smoking area was always full and the non smoking area was either empty or barely in use. Smokers were leaving and not playing because there was no room to play in the smoking section. So I do not see them banning smoking in the casino. Delaware casinos have lost a lot of money since the state put in place a no smoking inside any building law a few years back.

Of course the non smoking area was empty most of the time! There is no such thing as a non smoking area in any room which contains a smoking area, that is a laughable idea. Like the non weeing side of the swimming pool! The amount of 'space' a smoker occupies is huge, in terms of the smell and drifting smoke, compared with a non smoker.

Given that smokers are now in the minority in the developed world, I suspect there are more potential gamblers deterred from using casinos on ships than there will be smokers to take up the slack. By banning smoking in the casino, the cruise lines can encourage what are going to be their major customers in the future, given the continuing decline in smoking, and the fact that more people are becoming accustomed to smoke free environments on land.

So even outside limited zones will not be enough?

I think this is just greedy. ;)

They already have limited zones, they are called "smoking sections". Greedy? Non smokers have 95% of the ship as it is and they are still complaining and I am being classified as greedy? Seriously?

My experience has been different over the last few cruises . Yes the smoking area in the casinos can seem crowded but was always filled with non-gamblers smoking , or smoking gamblers who were not actually gambling :D . Generally lots of room for gamblers at both the tables and slots . Never saw anyone shooed away for smoking but not gambling . Perhaps that is the issue .

Was on NCL Star for 21 days recently never bothered by smoke as we don't gamble. And walking thru the casino was no big deal!

I can agree with the smokers hanging out there bit I guess they knew it would happen when they took away balcony smoking.

What I can get is why on earth did NCL put the smoking area near the atrium opening and not in the back where the non smoking area is. Would be easy to block that area off

So true the Atrium Area did smell like smoke. Not sure if any cruiseline will be able to get it right though

We would have loved to dine outside at Le Bistro until we noticed the smoke smell while walking in that area.

Yes

No

And, we were given in a cabin on the Star under the casino for 21 days and the room smelled of smoke so much it made me sick. No changes were made for us to another room, even though I complained every single day. Yes, it was a guarantee, so my fault(I will never do that again), but never in a million years did I think they would book cabins that smelled of smoke, (noise, bad design, bad part of the ship, but not smoke) It sometimes was worse than the casino was. I think the exhaust from the casino went into our room, I am not kidding. All the people, deck captian, etc, who came to smell our cabin could not believe it smelled so much like smoke.

So, I would be first onboard for a nonsmoking cruise and I can't even believe they allow it at all. Isn't fire one of the MOST dangerous things at sea? Well, at least that is what the capitan said was the number one problem at sea............but we were also on the first azipod cruise................lol.;p

Yes and No

By the way we had the same problem on the Jewel while we had our not yet 2 year old grandson with us. After many complaint throughout day and night we were transferred to another room. In the meantime we were told that we could take the baby to sleep in the common areas if we needed to. As far as the casinos, go look at how many people hang out there and don't play, just so they can smoke. Everyday it was a ritual, they would sit around near the entrance so they could smoke. NCL did refund our money for the cruise. You do know that no one will fly if they take the smoking away.

I thought you wanted it completely gone. :)

I think the problem lies with the cruise line in not enforcing their rules. People who are smoking and not gambling in the casino should be moved on. Why bother making these rules if you are not going to enforce them. It's the same with people who leave belongings on sun beds in or around the pool. If there is not a body on these beds after whatever time the cruise line dictates, the pool staff should remove them.

I would absolutely book a cruise ship that was totally smoke free. I don't think this will happen though, because itinerary is what actually dictates my cruise, and I can't see them all becoming smoke free. It's a real health hazard for those of us who have chronic pulmonary problems. Oh well!!!

Do to the fact that the rest of the world has not caught up with the US smoking laws I dont see it happening anytime soon. I am an ex smoker who realized what a disgusting habit smoking is at a young age. I quit bowling because of it, had to tolerate it as a standup comic for many years hated it, and just getting off a cruise ship of smoke addicts was such a turn off. Im not even talking about my health. I was sitting in the lounge by a window watching the only sunset of a poor weather week and some foriegn ******* lit up behind me and proceeded to blow his smoke right at me. I turned to him and smiled so that he might get the hint, but he lit another cigarette off of the one he just finished and he seemed to be sending it my way even more. 20 years earlier it might have been the first time a person did the knock out game on a cruise ship, but instead i turned to him and said really!! At which time blew the smoke again right at my face. He was a very lucky man that day... I went to my room took a shower and a nap. Forget about the casino!! Poor bastards dont realize what a sickness it really is...
