If NCL offered completely non-smoking cruises, would you book?

But that was 14 years ago. Since then smoking in the USA has declined from nearly 25% to less than 15% 85% is a huge market, but likely won't happen.

Also there is a lot of world outside of the USA who cruise (and smoke). People may not have noticed, but the cruise lines are really pushing for the Asian market recently (and smoking is much more prevalent there).

 

The US market is not the be all and end all from their point of view - they will tailor their marketing and rules to their target markets.

As a lifetime marketing company owner, anytime you can get a firm 85% market share you are killing it. Add to that the intensity of most non-smokers not to be involved with smoking and you have a winning combination. And not sure how much you have travelled but we are in Asia every year and the % of smokers--while higher than US, also dropping noticeably.

Sailed on Paradise when it was non smoking. Apparently people who don't smoke also don't drink or gamble as much. I can't imagine that it will be tried again.

It depends on why it was not successful the first time.

 

If a company can fill a ship with a combination of smokers and non-smokers, why take a chance on a previously failed attempt of going totally smoke free?

On Dawn in Jan this year and hated having to pass through the small lounge outside the smoking room as it smelled so bad of smoke due to the smoke escaping each time someone opened the door. Needs some type of extractor in there - the concentration of smoke in the smoking room must be awful if several people in there at one time.

I honestly can't believe that there are still people who can tolerate that kind of smoke exposure (enclosed in a small room) in this day and age knowing what we all know about smoking and also the dangers of second hand smoke. I also think that because of this knowledge of the carcinogen affects of smoking, that it should be all cruise lines duty to ban smoking entirely on their ships. Now, I'm sure I will take heat from those that say that infringes on their right, but the way I see it, it is NOT your right to endanger me or my family. Second hand smoke is very prevalent in those smoking areas on the ships--there is no denying it. And it is sometimes virtually impossible to just avoid those areas, as they are main areas and atriums of the ships. I think it is time they ban all smoking and just deal with it.

I would book a non smoking ship to cruise on. I don't smoke, never have. That would be cool. I book cruises though still that they are not non smoking, so either way. The advances they have done over the years has been welcome to me. I just avoid the smoky areas, except the casino to lose my allowed $100 gambling cash.

People weren't ready to embrace the non-smoking aspect of it. But since then, most public areas, bars, restaurants in North america have gone smoke-free with the rest of the world not far behind. I think if this was attempted again, now, it would be a much more successful endeavour.

 

As to the belief that non-smokers don't gamble.... based on the current set up, most don't. Not because they don't want to, but because the casinos on most ships are so heavily laden with smoke, they steer clear of the casino altogether. Remove that smoke, and you will likely see a much different scenario.

Absolutely correct!!! I don't smoke but if the casino were smoke free I would gamble As it stands now I spend zero money in the casino

Nah all they need to do is ban all indoor smoking

 

Then they can build a rather large enclosed on 3 sides plexiglass enclosure at the way far aft of a very high deck for the smokers and even put a bar setup in there and a few tables and chairs or bar stools and a some slot machines too a hot tub a waterfall Sort of like a very remote version of spice h2o. Only keep it away from non smokers

 

I guess a plexiglass roof too so to protect them from the elements and space permitting ultra nice cabins too up there

 

Make this area available 24/7 of course

 

The smoke would then just waif out over the ocean from a high point and the plexiglass enclosure would protect the smokers from the elements

 

 

Basically a smoking deck

 

Deck 16 or 17 or whatever depending on the ship

 

 

Make it large and far aft and on new builds even run an elevator up there. Perhaps some sort of real really great food service and a mini thermal spa which of course they could smoke in

 

Nice nice comfy loungers

 

 

Make it a wonderful place for smokers to spend lots of time plus it would really be a special unique extra that would attract lots of new pax that sail on other lines now

 

 

Oh and definitely DO NOT charge for entrance to this area It is not meant to replace Vibe passes or anything. It is meant to benefit the non smokers by making it so appealing that smokers want to stay in that area all the time

We were on a HAL cruise a few years ago, the Veendaam, iirc, and they had alternating nights of smoking and non-smoking in the casino. I do not know if that was a regular thing, or if they were just testing it out. Does anyone know more about that? If they are still doing it or how it worked out for them?

Nope they will lose out on the Casino money and all the smoking cruisers. I have lost as much as $4000 on a cruise-and I am not the only one. It has to be made up somewhere.

 

 

Hardly something to boast about! Seems as addictive as smoking but at least it doesn't affect anyone else, only the poor fool who admits to losing such a large amount of money. :confused:

The crew has to clean those disgusting ashtrays, which requires extra work for the crew. The ship has to run an exhaust to deal with the smoke. So if anything, the cruise line would save money-unless they think smoking = gambling = drinking $$$$

I think at some point in time in the future, everything will be non-smoking. It may not be within the next 5 years - but it will happen. Fewer and fewer young people are picking up the habit - and the ones that do tend to be at the bottom end of the socioeconomic scale - they likely can't afford cruises. Eventually, there will be a tipping point where it just doesn't make sense anymore to cater to smoking. The older smokers will be gone, and there aren't huge numbers of smokers coming up to replace them - tides turn.
