Are Standards Slipping? Celebrity Eclipse - May 2017 - President’s Cruise.

Standards have slipped to new lows!

We are presently on the Equinox, and have observed that the standard of long pans or jeans are no longer needed in mdr! Now I know rules are relaxed this time of year, but the raggedy jeans, flip flops and torn clothing belongs at the Big Mac not at dinner. This is a week into an eleven day cruise and each night there are less standards than the night before.

Interesting thread. Not sure I ever called Celebrity Premium. It usually is first we look at then scout other lines with comparable itineraries. Loyalty to a cruiseline became non-existent years ago for us. Is it different than 10,20,30 years ago, like all things in life. Some things are no longer there, some have been modified some added. Like some, others, not so much. But I thing in my opinion is true of all the lines, help just ain't what it used to be. Safe journeys.

I really don't think standards have slipped much. Everyone focuses on what has changed (missing) instead of talking about what has been added. I sailed Celebrity when it was a brand new cruise line - the staterooms didn't have balconies, the number of lounges were few, there was no solarium pool etc. There also wasn't free drinks for repeat cruisers and extra perks etc. Now we have all inclusive drink packages, specialty restaurants, it's easy to get a table for two in the main dining room, flexible dining, priority tender tickets for Elite cruisers etc. Celebrity's staff is still top notch too. I would also argue that there is more space per passenger than there was years ago as well. If X isn't good enough, yes please do everyone a favour and go elsewhere. Nothing ruins a cruise more than listening to people gripe about trivial issues. I guarantee they'll start complaining about their new favourite cruise line after a few years there too saying how it just isn't as good as it used to be.

Well said and you can add the price to your list. I paid more for my cruise in an ocean view cabin way back when, then I pay for my Concierge Class cabin today.

Among the changes we notice are pax demographics...brought on by alc packages and cross benefits with Royal C ..

..We used to enjoy Royal for a fun party time cruise, and X for a more elegant, refined, dressed up experience..giving us choices from the same family of cruiseline...now they are both the same.....

Hoping Edge re-sets the X differentiation.

We were on 5/5 Equinox and saw shorts, wife beater shirts and baseball caps at bars at night including Martini Bar on one Chic night around 6pm. Torn/ slashed jeans at World Class bar at night. Bars overcrowded too

Celebrity and staff dont appear to enforce their own dress codes. Dont know why they dont just go all casual if this is the case

We had to laugh when a manager onboard told us he felt they hadn't explained the dress codes to the "new" cruisers trying Celebrity for first time. Lame excuse [emoji849]. Staff also told us drunks had fight in MDR during dinner hours one night and security was called in to intervene.

Very sad. We will be on this cruise on 5/26. We are not prudes but expect our fellow cruisers show respect. If this an indication of things to come, then count us out for future cruises. Management needs to step up to the plate. We have 2 more booked. Maybe no more if this Modern Luxury. Queen Lisa needs to move on to Carnival.

In all our years of cruising nearest to a fight we have ever seen were two mobility scooters locked together at a lift both insisting they had been waiting the longest....no fisticuffs but some choice language!

I am not dismissing poor behaviour, it can happen anywhere (including high star hotels and premium cruise lines). It is always unpleasant when you encounter it. When it is an unusual, rather than regular occurrence however, I would not let it marr my overall holiday experience...

We have cruised Equinox twice (11 night cruises) and had no issues re standards of dress or behaviour. Yes, if we looked closely at mealtimes I am sure we could spot a few underdressed guests but we used to spot them prior to the 'rules' relaxing. We are recently off Eclipse and last year were on Solstice. Atmosphere and dress very much as we have always experienced.

In contrast on Oasis earlier this year we did feel that more people in the evenings were still in beach wear, that the bars were louder, the guests livelier. Not a criticism, just a noticeable difference. We can enjoy Royal cruises for what they are...We can, however, see a clear difference between the two lines and still see Celebrity as being the relaxing venue we have always enjoyed.

I believe these first time "summer" Equinox cruises from Miami and 4 free perks are changing to more party vibe you described on Royal and we've had on NCL and Carnival years when we were on them years ago.

Will be interesting to see if their marketing changes demographics on our December cruise

Time of year and length of cruise have a great deal to do with what type of demographic you will get on any cruise line. We took a 12 night cruise in January on RCCL's Anthem of the Seas and we met a group of the nicest people we have met in a long time on any cruise.

Surely if someone at 6pm has casual, daywear on at The Martini Bar then they could be 2 1/2 hours before their dining time so lots of time to change for dinner. What would you prefer, they are escorted from the Martini Bar? I've been there at 6pm in shorts grabbing a drink after a port day before going to change for dinner. I never thought someone would look upon me as an undesirable. There is no dress code or recommended dress for the world class bar so what someone wears there is irrelevant.

Celebrity don't need to enforce their dress code, they don't have one. It's all advisory now. If people don't like that then maybe other cruise lines may suit them better.

The latter is just cruise hearsay. As above 'explaining dress codes' is irrelevant now since there are none. The manager was trying (badly) to placate you. A third party report of a 'fight' in the main dining room could be anything from a minor disagreement to a physical fight. Unless I hadn't seen it myself I couldn't make an opinion on just one persons view.

yes...I see how this from Celebrity on their website and in the daily paper would be confusing to some:

Smart Casual attire can be enjoyed every other night of your cruise.

Women should feel comfortable wearing:

  • • Skirt, pants or jeans with a casual top

Men should feel comfortable wearing:

  • • Pants or jeans with a sport shirt that has sleeves

Note: T-shirts, swimsuits, robes, bare feet, tank tops, baseball caps and pool wear are not allowed in the main restaurant or specialty restaurant at any time. Shorts and flip-flops are not allowed in the evening hours. The dress code will be enforced at all restaurants. And guests are asked to follow the Smart Casual or Evening Chic dress code in the Celebrity Theater for all evening performances. The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening.

...I don't expect people to take my word after all we are all strangers here for the most part. That is why I took this photo to share. Of course maybe I faked the photo too

This was at the Martini Bar 6:30 on a casual attire night described above.

The daily paper onboard also noted that bathrobes should not be worn so apparently staff felt that was necessary reminder too.

Just reporting my observations and feedback. I don't think the dining room waiter had any reason to lie about the fight in the dining room one night but again we are strangers so who knows.

Am I missing something? That picture was taken where there is no "dress code"...right?

.

The guy was neither in the MDR, specialty restaurant or at an evening performance, so I don't understand what the issue is.

Exactly. However there are no dress codes now on Celebrity anyway. A guy, with tats, at the Martini Bar at 6pm, shock-horror.

Anything in the Celebrity daily is advisory. All I can say is on our Celebrity cruises we've never seen anyone underdressed.

and yet the poster took a underhand photo of him............I would be happy to admire those tats at the Martini Bar, at 6.30 or later. Are we really back in the dark ages where tats = dumb?

Gentlemen..you are all so funny!!!

I thought the "no shorts and flip flops" in the evening (and no bathrobes) was ship wide based on the Celebrity statement and he had those on too but not photographed. I waive to your greater knowledge of the Celebrity rules. Obviously Celebrity didn't care and that is what counts, right?

Even so the picture still is hilarious to us since we used to cruise Carnival (2008) with the same guy I think!

...actually he was in a photo I took of my friends and he was in the background but note I did cut his head off to give him some semblance of privacy. I hope someone took our photos (other than those pesky photographers) and are enjoying too!

From a lady's point of view. Funny, you had an issue that he had a wife beater on and a cap and now it is shorts and flip flops. There are certain things folks wear on my cruises that I don't understand, like on my last Celebrity cruise, the guy in the speedo whose belly hung so low it covered the front of his entire speedo, but this was his choice to wear it and I would never lower myself to take a picture of someone, in an effort to try to ridicule them. Yes I did. That was supposed to say "took this photo and cropped to share". If you will kindly note my above comment I took photo of my friends and this poor man was in it. Oh the continued horror and amusement all wrapped into one...lol

I'm enjoying all of your exchanges very much. Thanks to all of you for engaging with me today. Time to sign off since I have managed to stir your pots enough today.

As Jane Austen wrote, " For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbors, and laugh at them in our turn?”

Take care everyone and enjoy your cruises!

I'll just take what you said the first time as fact and your comment calling this gentleman "this poor man" tells the whole story. Hopefully you can enjoy all your cruises and not be in horror and/or amusement over what others choose to wear, because I can probably guarantee that they could care less what you wear.
