What Do You Do to Stay Healthy When Cruising ?

Recommended Posts

The mind boggles, but it is the people with bad habits who probably don't get ill because their immune system is used to it.

Right, probably true, because they are the same way when they are home!! Like the sjb317 said, your habits are your habits and should not change when you go on vacation.

A few years ago, there was an interesting thread/article about how stateroom attendants do not have the time to thoroughly clean their portfolio of staterooms. It was this article that now has me doing the "complete wipe-down" with Lysol wipes at the start of every cruise or hotel stay - and without fail.

all very good info here, and the only thing I would add is I always bring my own small bottle of antibacterial hand soap for my bathroom. Lots of hand washing, and I use the antibacterial wipes on the plane too, the tray, the tray knob, the seat buttons, and all over the cruise room the first day.

It all ways amazes us that there are off shoot flamers . When a topic is important they still flame or just for no reason at all . Well imo they need to get a life & we hope they do lol

So true!! As much as I love cruise discussions, I keep finding myself appalled by some responses. Respect for our elders? Respect for a serious topic. Respect out of nothing but a sense of decency? Silly, silly me. Infuriating. Mean people suck!!!

FYI: Not everyone who coughs has a cold, flu or other virus. Some people suffer from COPD from years of smoking, lungs damaged by pneumonia or exposure to environmental agents.

So true, and I sympathize with them. However, as a complete stranger you have no way to know when someone coughs right by you. Are we to ask every stranger who coughs by/on us whether they have a contagious illness or not?

Dan

I'm really healthy but a germaphobe about airplanes. I go to Asia every year which means I'm on the first plane 3 hours, the second 14 hours and the third 6 hours. That's LOTS of germs! The only colds I have had in the last 30 plus years have been after being on an airplane so I started researching and found that there is an antiseptic spray called Halo that protects against airborne germs. You spray it into your mouth every 4-6 hours. You can Google it and read about it. I order it from Jet.com.

I totally agree, most people try to give good advice based on their personal experiences and some people seem to want to knock and disrespect them at every opportunity.

This ultimately discourages people to post which is a loss to some of us who want to hear people's advice.

Some points listed are redundant, but I'll post my list anyway:

* Our doctor gives us a generic antibiotic when we go on longer trips (14+)

* I touch the elevator buttons with my wrist or knuckle

* When using the stairs, I hold my hand OVER, not on the railing, just in case I stumble.

* I prefer soap and water, but use the hand sanitizers whenever I see them as a supplement

* I try to NOT use the salt and pepper shakers, probably the dirtiest items on the table

* We also Clorox wipe down the remote and similar items in the cabin

* I now don't use the hot tubs after contracting my very first UTI on our last cruise (BTW- the medical facility was great)

* I eat lots of fruit and veggies and get lots of fresh air on sea days and stay away from the smoky casino.

I take extra airborne vit C

Wet wipe down EVERYTHING in the room when I embark.

A bit of a hassle but after going through a buffet and touching the tongs I put my food down and find a place to wash my hands

or go back to the sanitizer.

Always wash hands after touching anything and are going to eat. slot machines, casino chips, hand railings, doorknobs.

Nothing different then I do every day, other then possibly washing my hands more frequently. I avoid the use of hand sanitizers. I always use the handrails while going up and down the stairs. Would not want to fall and break something. I don't worry about elevator buttons, or not touching my face. Never clean the stateroom, or worry about touching things in the Windjammer. I just use basic common sense and good manners. My immune system is top notch - at 65 years of age, I have never had the flu. I do pick up a stomach virus now and again. I have had 2 in the last 15 years. Not bad for an old lady. Oh, I work in a public school - exposed to all kinds of things. DH, can claim the same illness free life. We both have great immune systems.

THIS!!!! Well, almost...not an old lady, more like an old codger but formerly a stud muffin (at least in my opinion)...and I don't work in schools.

I came to the conclusion...which has been confirmed by several different doctors and nurses...that eventually something is going to cause me to die. Until that time, life is to be enjoyed.

I second that.

Ever read the ingredients for Airborne? Ever read the discalimers? Stuff just lightens your wallet. And all the extra (above RDA) Vitamin C? Washes out in the toilet. Linus Pauling, smart as he was on some things wasn't too smart on this.

Skip the commercials, do some research before taking these things.

Okay , so you do the complete wipe down before every cruise and hotel stay so what happens when the cabin attendant comes in and brings " bad stuff" in when he cleans your cabin/room ? It is called transference. Whatever that's on his cleaning supplies that he used to clean another cabin is now in your cabin. This is just like eating at a restaurant where the table has been wiped down with a dirty rag. Are you wiping down the room every time he leaves ? Airborne viruses can be avoided by wearing a mask , staying away from crowds , sick people or just staying home. After taking two graduate classes in microbiology, I "see " bacteria, viruses , fungi, microbes everywhere and it can drive you nuts. Just use common sense .

Yes we wipe down any handles touched whenever anyone else has been in our cabin or hotel room.

If you ever have had Norovirus you will understand why you don't want it again i can assure you that.
