taylortime05 Posted July 22, 2017 #1 Share Posted July 22, 2017 Hi, I've taken 3 cruise so far and each time I book a cruise I get excited for that cruise to come. How many people do cruises only versus cruises and land vacations? What drives your decision? Thanks so much for the feedback.
wendy_woo Posted July 22, 2017 #2 Share Posted July 22, 2017 We take land vacations to locations where you need to immerse yourself in the country and travel inland to see sights. We take cruises to destinations where whats in Port is not so compelling, we go for the cruise experience more than the destination, we try to do one of each a year Sent from my iPad using Forums mobile app
easyboy Posted July 22, 2017 #3 Share Posted July 22, 2017 We just do cruises as my disability discourages me to do cruise plus land tour.
mugtech Posted July 22, 2017 #4 Share Posted July 22, 2017 We use cruises as a scouting expedition to determine where we would like to do future all in one place vacations. Now that we are retired, we get to do plenty of both.
NLH Arizona Posted July 22, 2017 #5 Share Posted July 22, 2017 I do both land and sea vacations. I take a few cruises a year, plus trips to different land vacations and a summer "get out of the heat" road trip to various different locations. zqvol Posted July 22, 2017 #6 Share Posted July 22, 2017 Hi, I've taken 3 cruise so far and each time I book a cruise I get excited for that cruise to come. How many people do cruises only versus cruises and land vacations? What drives your decision? Thanks so much for the feedback. This year we are doing 5 land based trips and two cruises. Granted some of the land based trips are only 4 days, but two of them were a week, and one involved foreign travel. Often our decisions are based on what we want to do in a particular season and where we can accomplish it.
gymbomb Posted July 22, 2017 #7 Share Posted July 22, 2017 We do both, but currently most of our land vacations are visiting family or something like rent if a beach house for a week because those are easy things to do with young kids. We cruise 1-2 times a year, though we skipped this year due to wanting to avoid Zika areas while pregnant and then being too far along to cruise when the Bermuda season opened. CruisingUS Posted July 22, 2017 #8 Share Posted July 22, 2017 I much prefer cruising over land vacays. On land vacays, there is an issue of transportation. My family includes 4 VERY different people who want to do very different things. On the cruise ship, that isn't an issue as we can we can pair up and go do stuff that we share an interest in or all 4 split into 4 separate things. It's fun. That way we all get to do what we want. No one is dragged anywhere they don't want to be. People can sleep in. And we can go do something else if you get sick of anyone. spending 24 hours with someone can be a lil much for some people (not me, but my friends can only take their parents or in laws in small chunks of time)
Rare Laszlo Posted July 22, 2017 #9 Share Posted July 22, 2017 My wife and I are 54, we didn't take our first cruise until 2011. Since then we have been on 7 NCL cruise and I just booked an 8th. We do a 50/50 split now. Some places you just can't take a cruise to like Zion and Yellowstone National Park Lol
lisakoivu Posted July 22, 2017 #10 Share Posted July 22, 2017 We used to cruise exclusively, but have given it up in the last couple of years. AI's are just so much simpler. All the drinks are included. You can get tours to anywhere on the island you want to go. There are shows and recreation at the resort. You don't have to wake up early to make the most of your day on the island - you're just there all week. And finally, the deciding factor for us, we just got sick of the whole transfer thing. In order to get the ship, you have to get there the day before and stay in a hotel. It's stressful if your plane is late. On the day you disembark you have to guess when is good to book the flight, and invariably, to be on the safe side, book 1 pm or after and potentially hang around the airport for no reason. With the AI, the tour company shuttles you direct from the plane to your vacation and back with minimal waiting time. I think I am done cruising until I retire, and have that kind of time, and also have the time to take two and three week cruises, which I think would be more relaxing. Gershep Posted July 22, 2017 #11 Share Posted July 22, 2017 We do both but if it was up to me I would just cruise.
retiring soon Posted July 23, 2017 #12 Share Posted July 23, 2017 Hi all! We do all inclusives & road trips as well as cruises. Last Feb I couldn't get the cruise we wanted so we went to 2 all inclusive resorts in Panama. It was there I clued into the fact I prefer cruising. So much more to do in a nicer climate with more food choices. We too have returned to places discovered on a cruise to see more of them. ~ Jo ~ :)
Ask4Jay Posted July 23, 2017 #13 Share Posted July 23, 2017 Cruises exclusively. We are in our 80s, I cannot drive any longer, so car trips are out. I spent 30+ years in the airline biz, had many long internat'l weekend trips. Now we enjoy shipboard life. Nizzie Posted July 23, 2017 #14 Share Posted July 23, 2017 We try to do one land-based trip every other year (in which we apparently try to kill ourselves with sightseeing) and in between do a cruise where we relax more. Our shared vacation time is very limited so we have to be prudent and pick and choose wisely. Sent from my iPad using Forums
sanger727 Posted July 23, 2017 #15 Share Posted July 23, 2017 We tend to alternate. Agree that some destinations are much more suitable for a land trip than a cruise so we don't force our trips to fit a cruise itinerary. So every other year we try to do a more exotic land trip and alternate with a budget Caribbean cruise or AI. ClevelandCruisin Posted July 23, 2017 #16 Share Posted July 23, 2017 Cruise mostly, twice a year. Vegas maybe once a year if we can. Then road trips if we can afford it after everything. Sent from my SM-G955U using Forums mobile app
Weetahbugdotcom Posted July 23, 2017 #17 Share Posted July 23, 2017 Land vacations for sure. You got to know destinations better (outside the tourist stuff.) that way and do things on your terms. I can't imagine takin s cruise with my partner. We would both hate it. That's not to say I don't love cruising. I do when it comes to spending time with my girlfriends or alone. But you don't really get to experience a destination as much on a cruise- it's more of the cliffs notes. My land vacations are great and rewarding and when they are over, I almost need a vacation, but I learn a lot and experience a lot. My cruises? I feel amazing afterwards and have to do no work to have fun and feel like everything is pretty :) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
riclop Posted July 23, 2017 #18 Share Posted July 23, 2017 Cruises are the BEST value, IMO.
WillWorkForCruise121 Posted July 23, 2017 #19 Share Posted July 23, 2017 We do a mix of land and cruises but find cruises to be an incredible value vs land vacations. I also walk away from a cruise feeling refreshed and have had a chance to disconnect from life back on land. Land vacations have their place for us but cruises are a primary part of our vacation plans for the future indefinitely. roddy good boy Posted July 23, 2017 #20 Share Posted July 23, 2017 We do both. I fact, I'm trying to decide between Hawaii (again) for next year or a cruise out of Barcelona. Luckily, you can sometimes blend the two. In my humble opinion, the best way to really explore a foreign Country requires a land trip. Unfortunately, I need knee replacement surgery. If I don't take care of it in the Fall, it looks as if we will be sitting on a beach in Hawaii! If I have the surgery, we'll spend several days in Barcelona and then cruise for 7 (and explore other Countries, as well)! The older we get, we take less land trips in the U.S. and Europe (that require extensive walking) and more cruises to the Caribbean and land trips to beaches. :')
Bra_BE2014 Posted July 23, 2017 #21 Share Posted July 23, 2017 I like to spend some time on the embarkation day location, does that count as land va ation? Budget Queen Posted July 23, 2017 #22 Share Posted July 23, 2017 I do both, based on itinerary only. I don't cruise for any "ship' and couldn't care less. It's only a great value of meals, lodging and transportation. I do travel at least 1/2 the year, so this is a jaded point of view. I'm more restless than most. :) (8 cruises so far this year) I most always have extra days with cruises anyway, which I guess also "count"? NH Cruisers Posted July 23, 2017 #23 Share Posted July 23, 2017 For a week long vacation? Definitely a cruise. Less than a week? Land. Seeing distant family, for me, obviously will be a land vacation. On a land vacation I am thinking of being aboard a ship.
dongordon Posted July 23, 2017 #24 Share Posted July 23, 2017 Cruises.... For us, there is no vacation like a cruise. We love the long cruises with the days at sea and because we are beach people we go to the Carribean each year. We cruise each year out of NYC and because we live in Long Island after we leave home our vacation starts within two hours sippin' cocktails on our balcony. And love the casual experience of NCL. Don
QueenOfZoom Posted July 23, 2017 #25 Share Posted July 23, 2017 For quite a few years I rode the back of the spouse's motorcycle. We did trips anywhere from overnight up to a two week adventure that covered 12 states! I stopped riding after an accident. Around that time the spouse started playing casino poker, he's at the point now where it's basically part-time job. Since last June we've used three CAS certificates and have a fourth cruise booked for December. Given the choice I'd probably choose an all inclusive (we got married at Sandals Negril) but there's no way we could afford three cruises a year without CAS so I'm not complaining :D
