What's up with "penny pinching" travels?

I'm surprised by what people find expensive and not worth it. A taxi ride to a beautiful Caribbean beach comes to mind. They instead walk to a sub par beach. This one seems so bizarre to me when the person then mentioned that they just lost $50 in the casino. I guess I figure that I could lose $50 at the casino back home but It's hard to find a beautiful beach nearby. Especially in March!:) Don't think that was their taxi money either by the sound of it!

Just different priorities - and there's nothing wrong with that

Call us frugal if you like. We take currency fluctuations into consideration when we travel. One reason we are not cruising very often lately is that our CAD dollar is very low vis a vis the USD. Nor are we considering Florida, Hawaii, etc. We are going to other warm winter spots that happen to be on our bucket lists and have a better value. Delaying a three week South Africa trip by a year saved us 15 percent on currency alone. Then we decided to book use a South African company to book our safari instead of a local firm. Major saving by doing this. We were travelling for 6-7 months. These types of savings serve to elongate/enhance our travels. No different when we are buying a cruise or deciding on a cruise vs a land option.

There may come a time when we only consider cruising. But that is not now. So cruising is just one option for us. We view a cruise as a commodity buy. Once we decide to buy it makes no difference where we buy it or how we buy it. The cabin and the ship's amenities are identical. The only difference is price. This is one difference from arranging and buying land trips (with the exception of AI's).

It could also be less about the money and more about the taxi itself. Someone who hasn't traveled much or who has had bad experiences with taxi drivers might not want to take one in a foreign country, especially one where they don't speak the primary language.

Could be but it wasn't "expensive" is the word they used. "$50 bucks" is what they said that they just lost in the casino. To others not odd I guess but to me it was.

The real question is what's up with labeling and disparaging people who choose to cruise differently than you? Why do you care about how someone else chooses to spend or save their money? Just because someone is more frugal than you does not make them a penny pincher, and just because someone else is more willing to spend extra money than you does not make them a spendthrift.

It is not a one-size-fits-all world. Live YOUR life and have the courtesy of allowing other people to live THEIRS.

AMEN AND THANK YOU! What I don't understand is how do you enjoy your cruise when you are so consumed in watching how others are spending their money? Who cares!!! No matter what kind of a trip I take I never consider myself a lower class person because I don't throw my money around on things I don't need or want to. I am able to scrimp and save for a roomette on Amtrak once a yr for a trip. I can't afford cruises now but I can do my Train trips. I worked hard my whole life just to get this vacation. I go on tours and sometimes eat out of Gas Stations ( or Dumpsters which is how I felt the original poster compared Gas Stations too ). Everyone please, go enjoy your trips and spend your money how you want. I could car less. If this poster is so worried about what we do with our money I will gladly send him my bill for my Amtrak roomette and he can pay for it. Other wise just leave me and others alone so we can enjoy our trips.

I'm in the middle. Sometimes we splurge on experiences and sometimes we try to get out as cheaply as possible. For instance, on our British isles cruise last month, we took two organized excursions--going to places I wanted to see that we couldn't get to on our own. The other ports we did on our own. The hop-on/hop-off buses are a great value to get around. Other things we did were go to museums and tour Guinness.

Work at a large Law Firm in Connecticut and only can take a week off at a time. Lucky live a few hours from both NYC and Boston so never have to fly. Find a cruise is a great was to take a one week vacation and find them very affordable if you add everything up. As many have said, spend what you want. Usually book on off weeks and have found great deals and less children. A cruise is so less stressful than flying, renting a car, having to eat out 2 or 3 meals a day. Lol, before my change of career worked for Kodak and had to travel 2 weeks out of 6. Done with flying. Im always surprised how little you have to spend at end of the cruise. Always enjoy ourselves. Thoes who can't do Just a balcony and need a suite, penthouse or haven. More power to them. Find it crazy to spend 5k when 2.5k gets you a great cruise. One time took the same cruise on CCL, 8 day no less for 299.00 each. CCL sent me the offer on a November cruise 5 weeks out. Had the vacation time, so off we went. So that was just under 1k all in all.

$299 for an 8 night Carnival Cruise is an absolute steal!

Which ship, which ports and what departure date?

Why does the poster call us Penny Pinchers just because we don't spend money or do things that they do on cruises. I call that being a SNOB!!!

Lots of name calling on cruise Critic if you dare disagree with someone, read a dress code thread, a tipping thread or a thread about disabilities to name just three topics.

Penny-pinchers or wise savers?

We prefer to live and travel frugally because I chose to retire from full-time work at age 29 (I'm in my 50's) and because we plan to retire with the same general lifestyle.

We have zero debt, pay interest on nothing, and paid cash for our home and older but in good shape cars. I work part-time in public broadcasting where the pay is low but the environment and attitudes are intelligent and stimulating. My husband is a well-paid professional who plans to retire at 55. We are fortunate in that we are supporting no one but ourselves.

We both have substantial savings and constantly add to it because we are not spending on ephemeral "stuff" that is meaningless to us; e.g., the latest phone or other landfill-destined gadgets. We spend money on experiences but almost never buy souvenirs, never buy photos, etc. We are ALWAYS saving for a rainy day and are very smart with money now in hope of a frugal but vital, travel-filled retirement.

Penny-pinchers ARE wise savers.

I'm not sure why some people would be offended when another calls them a penny-pincher. To me it's a badge of honour. Not a badge for me, mind you :D but a badge of honour none the less.

Yes. There are lots of people who do not believe in MYOB. And those who think the way they travel is the right way and all others are wrong. It is a little mind boggling sometimes to read the comments and realize that they are actually on the level and not pulling your leg as it were.

Who cares about what someone else does or does not do or how they dress. Certainly not our business to judge. We don't waste time sweating the small stuff or worrying about what others may think.

Its also worth noting that many enjoy what others consider a cheap holiday.

I love my cruises but I also love camping. Camping under the stars in the French Breton countryside gets you a feel of it much more than the hotel 2 miles away.

Then the excitement of researching a city yourself and doing it on your own time rather than being dragged around like a donkey or sitting on a bus not really experiencing anything.
