Fahrenheit 455 Steakhouse vs Ruth Chris

So, I am a huge Ruth Chris fan. I'm not a person that just craves any ole steak. I'm not a picky eater in general. In fact, on our cruises, I LOVE the buffet food. That being said, when it comes to steak, I am pretty picky.

Anyway, I've never been interested in trying Fahrenheit 455 but as I am preparing for my next cruise on the Sunshine, it has been said to me a couple times that it is comparable to Ruth Chris'. Any validity to this point?

Are you kidding???

$35 for each person per night is CHEAP! I am not rich, I live comfortably, the way I see things, if we are going on a trip you mind as well do it right all the way. I feel what you eat is more important to eat better than to eat bad, so the extra few dollars per night per person is well spent....you have no idea how cheap it is to eat at the Steakhouse on Carnival compared to the other fine dining steakhouses.

You budget and pay an extra $500 just to eat in the steakhouse all cruise?

Yep, specialty restaurants and chefs table are always part of the cruise fare for me. If I’m on a ship without them the MDR is passable for dinner but, if I have the option, I’m not eating there.

are you from Culpeper? we have been there a few times.

I am in SoCal, I have a client in Culpeper, and after sampling hundreds of steaks all over the world including a BBQ in Antarctica with Argentine beef, The Piedmont Steakhouse has consistently served me the finest meals.

I live in NY so I am lucky to have some really good steakhouses nearby. Peter Luger's is definitely the best steakhouse I have ever eaten at. I have only been to Ruth Chris in Weehawken NJ and thought it was pretty good. Not as good as Peter Luger's or Mark Joseph etc but good. So go and enjoy the steakhouse on Carnival.

Thank you!

We also find it surprising for anyone not to like the steaks at Ruth's Chris.

Hi there

For the price you would think they should like it :), but if they don't I can see why they would never return. While looking at the small upcharge for the Carnival steakhouse, you wouldn't feel put out even if you didn't like your main dish, not to mention that you could send it back and ask for something else. Plus, you can order as many sides as you like. So, let me see here, the comparison is spend $$$ and maybe enjoy it, or spend $ and maybe enjoy it. I would say spend the $ and if you don't like it you are only out $, and don't have to do it again.

We have never been disappointed at a Carnival steakhouse, but maybe that is because we never had to spend $$$.

The Carnival steakhouse offers half priced wine on the first night and sometimes on the second, depending on the sailing.

I love this forum! You guys are awesome. At Ruth Chris i enjoy the Filet well done.

Well done ? Shame on you ! :p

Ruth Chris is similar to Longhorn Steakhouse only its more pricier....Mortons Steakhouse/Peter Luger/David Burke/Bern's/BLT and Prime in Syosset NY are my most favorite steakhouses......honestly, I can't eat the food in the MDR on Carnival ships its just horrible but we sure are very happy with the Steakhouse on Carnival...for a cheap price your paying your getting an excellent meal.

On another note, Carnivals Steakhouse is much better than RC Chops!

This strikes me as odd . Hating all the food on a place where you are " stuck"

for the week except for a single steak venue .

We have tried Ruth's several times and Sunshine 455 several times.... Will be enjoying 455 in about 40 days or so!

Ruth's was excellent the first time we went, second they screwed up my steak so bad I was not sure I would ever go back... Tried it one more time and the steak was fine (not great, just fine) but the service was sub-par. Sad.

Went 3 times to 455 (twice free from the casino) and every time the service was wonderful and the food was excellent. Go figure.

Soooo I guess I favor 455 over Ruth's. Now downtown Charleston, SC has some very fine steakhouses and I would put several way above Ruth's and price reflects it. Makes Ruth's look like chump change!

when you pay that much money for food, it had better be good! why pay that much? I know, because you can!

We had booked two high end restaurants before going to Vegas, Nobu and Eiffel. It was an indulgence, I know, but guess what happened? The slots favored me and I won enough enough to cover both bills with a little left over.

Next up is the Carnival Dream casino cruise Oct.1, hoping the slots repeat. And we had the Steakhouse booked long ago.

On a side note, is it true day 1 there is a discount or something to go to the steakhouse?

On the first night, you can select a free bottle of red or white house wine, or take 50% off the cost of a bottle on the wine list. The 50% off deal is hands down the best choice. If you like a good wine, the Far Niente cabernet for $75 is a STEAL - and easily the best wine I've ever had.

As far as the steakhouse vs Ruth's Chris - it depends. I've had steaks that were tough and inedible at the steakhouse, and steaks that were underwhelming at best at Ruth's Chris. I've also had perfectly cooked, delicious steaks at both. Guess it depends on the night/location/stars' alignment. ;p

We never will go back to RC Chops, to us it is the worst steakhouse out of NCL Cagneys and Carnivals Steakhouse....we have tried it one evening on the Allure and cancelled our second evening....I tried Chops again on the Harmony this past May, same thing cancelled the second evening there, we won't be going back ever to Chops.

I might give them another try, but our dinner at Chops on Enchantment earlier this year was the worst of any steak house on any line so far. I've read a lot of complaints on the RCI boards lately about Chops, unfortunately. :(

I've look at the steakhouse menu. I'm not that impressed by it. Certainly not to the tune of an extra $500.

I hope you aren't one of those people who balk at paying an extra $100 to be upgraded from an inside to a balcony.

You just never know . This summer we ate at HAL's steak house , Pinnacle, on the Veendam .

A BIG disappointment ! The A/C was barely working , and my steak was badly over salted .

The sides were also mediocre .

On the plus side, the setting was nice and the company (DW) was fabulous . :D Oh and our meal was comped .

I just can't imagine eating steak every single night, seven days straight, no matter how good. I like more a variety, even if some of the food is not the best I have ever tasted of its time.

They have lamb, fish, lobster, chicken, and pasta. Not just steaks.

Cruizergal70- wow, sarcasm and rudeness lol....I laugh because you remind me of my mother! On another note, CERTAINLY I DO NOT mind paying for upgrades, and to be honest, we pay for specialty dining every night of our cruise so as you can see, money is not an issue, we feel you pay for what you get. It must be over 15 years plus since I had an interior stateroom and I can't recall the last time I even had an Oceanview room so your comment about hoping I am not one who "balks at paying an extra $100) doesn't apply to me.

I have no idea what you like as far as the menu is concerned, the menu is diversified, contains seafood, various beef/steak choices, lamb, poultry dishes how much more do you want, oh wait as my mother would say where is the meatloaf. :')

Richstowe that is a shame to hear, but HAL did the right thing and comp the meal for you so that is good and your right, its the company that matters first.

Gatour- I can eat steak every night but of course I don't....I generally would have lobster two evenings, steak 3-4 evenings and usually a fish dish there....

Spkemo answered correctly. ;)

We ate at Ruth's Chris in Aruba, our only time trying it, and we weren't impressed. I fully understand their cooking technique, which is really just broiled. Their steak wasn't very good, very fatty and greasy with grease splatters all over the plate. We haven't been to a Ruth's Chris again because of that. My wife loves steak. I like steak but rarely if ever get it at a restaurant. I will eat my own home cooked steak over a restaurant steak any time. I have cooked my steaks in a 500 degree oven in cast iron. Though I recently started grilling them on a small portable grill that I can get up to 700 degrees. All our home cooked steaks are choice cuts from Costco. They have the best steaks for the money. Well marbled and good flavor.

We usually go to the steakhouses on cruises that are 7 nights or longer and we usually enjoy them. I would put them above Ruth's Chris, but I am no expert. We really prefer The Keg in Canada when I get a chance to get there. Been to several of them on our trips north of the boarder.

I however couldn't imagine ordering a well done filet. That would end up being a hockey puck IMO. All steak should be cooked and eaten medium rare! The longer a steak is cooked, the more flavor you cook out of it. Though to each their own I suppose, it isn't my money you are spending :)

We thought both Chop (RCI) and Cagney's (NCL) were very poor, tough pieces of meat/ steaks....thought CCL was just a notch better but NOT good....and no matter how inexpensive ($35- $49) the upcharge as compared to on-land steakhouses....if it is NOT good it is NOT worth one red cent extra to us. We are now duly turned off of all the main line upcharge steakhouses....being from Chicago (which used to be the home of the 'stockyards' and fabulous beef) I guess we are used to far better!!

Apples to oranges. Ruth Chris' is MUCH better than any cruise line steakhouse. There really is no comparison.
