Tyler919 Posted October 14, 2017 #1 Share Posted October 14, 2017 This is a last effort, following comments directly on the ship and on comment cards to HAL, to try to perk up the Sports Bars on the fleet. It seems ineffectively named in that only one channel, ESPN2, is available. And on the occasions when they do purchase a satellite game feed, there is no communication to announce it. The bartenders I have asked are unaware and seem uninterested in what games may or may not be broadcast. I can certainly understand the thinking that a cruise is no place to worry about sports, but if you are going to market a "sports bar", perhaps someone from HAL should visit one and learn the concept...or just rebrand it to concept you can support. Yes multiple Satellite feeds are expensive...I get it. But either do it right or do something else. RuthC Posted October 14, 2017 #2 Share Posted October 14, 2017 I'm sure I've found three ESPN stations on the cabin TVs, and would expect the Sports Bar would have access to the same stations. Those are in addition to the 'special events' station, where I have found weekly NFL games, and playoffs. Now, whether or not they could have all running different stations at the same time, without creating a cacophony for everyone sitting there, is another matter. Krazy Kruizers Posted October 14, 2017 #5 Share Posted October 14, 2017 HAL's idea of a sports is pitiful. Do it right or take it out.
English_in_Spain Posted October 14, 2017 #6 Share Posted October 14, 2017 They also need to bear in mind that not everyone on the ship is from North America. Other people from other countries follow different sports. When sailing in the Med I would at least expect to see some European football or F1 motor racing. I agree, if they can't do it right then do something else. If people want to watch sport then they should watch it in their cabin.

The ESPN station is international, so there's a lot of European sports shown.

msmayor Posted October 14, 2017 #10 Share Posted October 14, 2017 I think a lot of it has to do with the particular ESPN feed they are able to pick up from the satellites. The last two HAL cruises we were on were both during March Madness. There was no chance of picking up the type of coverage that you get at home with multiple games on during most of the day/night...that was through TNT/TBS . We got whatever the ESPN Caribbean feed was allowed to carry. Every commercial break included a pitch for Cricket coverage, popular in the Caribbean. I'll agree that the idea of calling a bar a Sports Bar on HAL really doesn't make sense. The 'Sports Bars' on the ships we've been on are not reminiscent at all of Sports Bars we've been to that include good theming and memorabilia on display. I don't recall any of that type of decor. If you have no intention of sitting in that bar to watch TV, what does it matter to you what they are showing? Would you rather they show soap operas?
Rare Hlitner Posted October 14, 2017 #12 Share Posted October 14, 2017 HAL probably thinks that curling is an olympic sport. OMG.....it is. What has become of real sports? Personally, I would prefer no TV in any of the public lounges or bars.

I've always appreciated your posts, but I simply do not understand how on earth it can bother you that people watch sports in a sports bar. I abhor American football and baseball, but don't complain when others watch, and I can make a choice not to go into that bar.

SetAnOpenCourse Posted October 15, 2017 #17 Share Posted October 15, 2017 Personally, I would prefer no TV in any of the public lounges or bars. Agree! These days the yammer of the commentators and the commercials predominate - not sure how much actual sport would actually imbue the atmosphere even if it became the "real" sports bar as imagined by some in this thread. The noise level would spiral upwards as multiple broadcasts compete with each other and with the voices in the bar. The thought of showing the sport in season of only one or two specific countries is ludicrous. One man's preferred sport would be aired until the preference of the masses forced a channel change. The other choice would be to only show the most homogeneous stuff without exception - nauseating.

Sport fans can now watch four games at the same time. The next think you know, they will have shuffleboard on the sports bar TV. Hank Hey, it's FUN to watch curling!!! When I worked an Olympic Winter Games, every time I had a chance to go to the Volunteer tent for some food, the TV in there had CURLING. It seemed that curling matches took place all day long... And, we had the raw, live feed, so we had none of that babbling that the commentators for NBC are infamous for. If people want to watch sports in the existing Sports Bars onboard, go for it. If you object to the "noise" of people watching sports in the existing Sports Bars, no one is forcing you to be in that area - go somewhere else... Everyone has there "addiction";)
trub Posted October 15, 2017 #22 Share Posted October 15, 2017 i certainly have or i would not have commented - there are 2 screens in the gallery bar area and 1 larger one above the bar itslef - there are screens in the casino showing the same (espn or espn2 mailnly) it suits me fine as it does not intrude on thiose who dont want to watch sports
