Today we have gone into state wide ( Victoria) lockdown for 5 days. The restaurants are shut except for takeaway. Valentine celebrations for romantic dinners have been shelved so I am feeling sorry for the restaurants all supplied for a busy night.   We don’t celebrate Valentine's Day usually but this year will cook a nice meal with a special bottle out of the cellar to cheer us up. 
We are planning a trip to Tasmania in April so fingers crossed we will get there. 

 

Sorry to hear of those challenges in your part of Australia.  Good luck for those facing those "close-up" orders.  It's  tough time!!  Getting ready to figure out where we will be getting our carry-out Valentine's Weekend dinners.  Being done by pick-up.  My wife is not comfortable going into a dining room. Too cold for dining outside!!??

Here ( downunder) folks are very sensitive to the ambulance sirens and make a path like Moses turning back the sea. ( not so bothered about the law tho.. they can find their own way through..) 

On a crowded freeway there are cars going everywhere frantically trying to clear the way and.. always.. one dopey dunderhead in la la land who has no idea and sits there in the way with the sirens screaming behind him…sigh...

Saint Valentine, known as Saint Valentine of Rome, was a 3rd-century Roman saint, commemorated in Western Christianity on February 14 and in Eastern Orthodoxy on July 6. From the High Middle Ages his Saints' Day has been associated with a tradition of courtly love.  Here is a little lyric history that I penned a few years ago.

Saint Valentine 

 

Rome, involved in bloody battles
And unpopular campaigns
Had run into a problem
New recruits were on the wane.

 

Claudius II thought he knew
The reason for this dearth
Roman men loved their women
And their families had great worth.

 

To address this new dilemma
Emperor Claudius decreed
A ban on marriages and the like
Thus besotted men he freed.

 

Valentine was a priest of Rome
But shared not the emperor’s view
He continued to perform weddings
Against decree and in danger true.

 

When Valentine was discovered
He was arrested and then tried
Clubbed, stoned and beheaded
On February 14th he died.

 

His death didn’t go unnoticed
Pope Gelasius marked it well
The Feast Day of Saint Valentine
On February 14th does dwell.

 

Saint Valentine is the patron
Of lovers and couples all
Celebrating love in the world today
Let us heed the good saint’s call.

Colo. Springs has had freezing fog and very cold temps this past week, while in "The city above the clouds" we had sunny 40s but very strong winds. Last night we watched the temp go from 30s to single numbers in less than an hour. It got down to -13 overnight and is only -8 now. Good day for the sauna and jacuzzi (both on lower level, inside). Happy Valentines Day.

This am on the national CBS Sunday Morning program, they had many different, historic items related to Valentine's Day.  One item cited was also covered in this web summary: "Candy hearts were originally medical lozenges.  In 1847, Boston pharmacist Oliver Chase invented a machine that simplified the lozenge production process, resulting in the first candy-making machine, according to The Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America. After identifying an opportunity to revolutionize the candy business, Chase shifted his focus to candy production with Necco wafers."

Our daughter informs us that the Feb. 14 weekend is also known for "Gal-intine's Day" celebrations, where ladies without current romantic commitments (or those whose wish to augment them) have fun lunches, dinners or activities with other ladies.

Thanks, Lois! We have had a nice day so far. Relaxing at home, after arriving about an hour ago. Chris let the RS5 fly up the Thruway and we made good time.

 

We left home on Friday morning and made a few stops on the North Shore, and one winery, before checking in to our hotel in Riverhead. Then we had time for another winery before a late dinner.

 

Yesterday we drove out to Montauk (easternmost point of the south fork, LI) and then headed back to Sag Harbor for a nature preserve hike. We took the ferry to Shelter Island and hiked about 5 miles round-trip in another nature preserve on the island, before returning by another ferry to the North Fork for some more wineries. We definitely needed them after that hike; it was rough going in the snow. We had a nice seafood dinner and then back to our hotel to rest our tired legs.

 

This morning we got an early start and headed to Fire Island. We got very lucky - we were pretty much ready to leave by 10:30, and the lighthouse tours don't start until 11:00, so we figured we'd miss out. But we saw that the gift shop was open, so we went in, and they asked if we'd like to climb the lighthouse! Of course! So we had a nice tour and were done around 11:00. Then we met up for a little while with our maid of honor from our wedding, who lives nearby. She is lying low because of Covid, so we met in a park and had a nice chat outdoors, with our masks on. Still, it was nice to see (most of) her face; it's been a few years.

 

On the way home I had a brilliant idea - since we were hungry, and we had skipped lunch, I suggested that we stop at our favorite German restaurant for take-out and bring that home. It was worth the 30-minute detour. So that was our Valentine's Day dinner - Schweinshaxe and Wiener Schnitzel. I found a Muller-Thurgau to go with it.

 

Tomorrow we recover and then Tuesday, back at it. Hope everyone's day is going well.
