Royal Caribbean discriminates Jewel passengers

OMG this is the best response. Discrimination is NOT the correct word to describe this. Discrimination is covers a few protected classes and your choice of cruise ship is not one of them.

Um, the word has meanings beyond racial prejudice.  Clearly the OP is talking about unequal treatment that has nothing to do with age, sex, or race.

The November 5th Jewel of the Seas Transatlantic cruise has had 3 ports cancelled and replaced with the Canary Islands. The November 5th Navigator of the Seas Transatlantic has had 3 ports cancelled and replaced with the Canary Islands. Same issue, weather related. Understandable. So what’s discriminating about that?

The discrimination is in the fact that Royal is giving the Navigator passengers OBC of $100-300 per cabin plus a future cruise credit for 25% of the cruise fare value per person on a future cruise. Royal isn’t offering Jewel passengers any competition!

As as a passenger on Jewel it seems ridiculous and short-sighted of Royal Caribbean to offer some passengers compensation and not others. We were both impacted by the exact same storm and extreme itinerary changes to both cruises. Having been a very loyal Royal cruiser in the past it makes me question if I want to continue cruising with them when there are so many other choices available!!!

Missed ports are disappointing but it is not something anybody can control.

Several of our Royal cruises have missed ports due to many reasons. Sometimes there was compensation sometimes not. Not worthy of being the only reason to stop cruising with them, but variety and choices are always good to have.

Think the phrase "double standard" applies here.  Guests on Jewel chose a particular cruise for the ports - the same reason Navigator guests chose theirs.  Pointless to compare which were the better ports or how much people paid for their cruise.   On Jewel we were not given option of cancelling our cruise - notice of itinerary change was in some cases given to guests as they arrived on ship.   Some of us were already on board as consecutive cruisers and did not get any advance notice of complete itinerary change.

In the interest of goodwill, wouldn't it have been a nice gesture to give all guests the same compensation.  The $100 obc would've been spent on board so would have cost nothing.  And an FCC of 25% - what's the percentage of people that actually use it for a future cruise?  No cost, just good marketing - people would be back spending more money on another cruise.   But guests would've felt that our inconvenience and frustration were at least acknowledged.  They have created ill will instead.

Feeling is that Jewel management/RCCL dropped the ball on this one.   Would be interested to know who actually made the final decision about compensating guests on Jewel - was it RCCL or Hotel Director?

Not sure if you intend the phrase "double standard" to apply to my post.  My comment was in response to someone concluding use of the word "discrimination" applied to age, sex, or race issues.

Anyway, I have little argument with what you say.  If I had been in your shoes I'm pretty sure I would feel the same.

I agree Royal has created a lot of ill will..

It was Corporate who decided to compensate one ship and not the other.

I do have one more cruise booked with Royal , non refundable deposit and flight already booked,  and although Diamond Plus feel that will be my last.

I sent an email to Michael Baileys office when we returned and received a call back 2 days later.  The person who called me was not extremely nice, never apologized but just explained that the passengers on Navigator were going to US ports and given EU ports in exchange and Jewel passengers were still given EU ports.  When I asked when St Maarten became a EU port, she just ignored it and refused to answer even when I asked again.  She ended up giving me free dinner in Chops on my January cruise which I still haven’t received and isn’t on my cruise planner.

I would think that reps from the CEOs office would be nice and at least apologize but that wasn’t the case. I’d say that I’m going to change cruise lines but that won’t happen either because we’re diamond plus and I’m Signature level in Casino Royale.  Guess they know that and can treat us with disrespect.

I sent emails back and forth during the jewel TA with the copy of the letter sent to the 11/5 navigator sailing and I never received a logical response as to why these 2 sailings were treated differently. We found out about the Itinerary change on the morning of the 4th when we were in Italy. We scrambled to cancel our plans in Valencia, Lisbon and the azores. Luckily we were reimbursed in the first 2 and the rental car place in the azores gave us a future credit which we will use on the brilliance next November. We had to try to get rental cars with automatics in the canaries which was difficult as we only had 6-7 days as well as st Martin. On the ship there was not a big selection for excursions which was to be expected.  I agree with the decision to reroute for safety reasons. There were 35 foot swells in the Atlantic on the route we would have taken. What I didn't agree with was no similar compensation for us as for the navigator. If neither ship was compensated, I wouldn't have minded. I've been on ships with changed itineraries. I'll continue to book cruises with rccl if the price is good but I was really surprised at the decision to compensate one ship and not the other.

We heard from a fellow guest while on Jewel crossing that he spoke to one pinnacle person who said she got 20% FCC for the itinerary change.  Haven't confirmed this personally but wouldn't surprise me.   Another example of double-standard on this ship by management?  Definitely pinching pennies here.

If that's true, that is really disgusting. We have 2 more cruises booked with royal and after hearing this, I honestly have no interest in sailing with them again. I've sailed with carnival and celebrity and am trying Norwegian. I'll just stick with whomever gives me the best deals. If it happens to be royal then I'll do it. The fact that only the elite on a ship can get reimbursed is really just unbelievable. I'd be ok if no one got anything on the sailing but if some did, then that isnt right.

Do you think you're primarily upset because you found out what someone else got. 🤔  If Navigator got nothing, I'm sure you would still be unhappy, but would you be this upset?

I personally cant speak for the other poster but yes I'm upset because the navigator did. I'll get over it but I wish they had done the same for us. I had a great time and saw places most people dont see. I wish I hadn't known about the navigator.

St Maarten/St Martin are French and Dutch territories. Ergo, they are EU nations.

While the Caribbean is not Europe geographically, they are EU

St Maarten and the ABC islands are overseas territoriies of the Netherlands that are associated with the EU but do not belong to the EU.

Yes I heard this in the Diamond lounge.  Actually spoke to the person.

Aruba is an independent nation, although still with close ties to the Netherlands. I don’t know about Bonaire or Curacao. However, St Martin is not an ABC island (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao)

Saint Martin is the only overseas collectivity of France with the status of being an outermost region of the EU.[9] As with the French overseas departments, the euro is legal tender in Saint Martin, and it is outside the Schengen Area and the EU VAT Area.

It is the fact that one ship was compensated and the other not ( except perhaps the pinnacles).
