Starting December 1st. Anyone smoking in their cabin or on their balcony will be charged $500 on the Sign and Sail and all cabin members kicked off the ship at the first port. Wow!!! About time. Guests are encouraged to report balcony smokers to guest services.

I find it hard to believe that carnival will actually follow thru with this... Technically, they can kick you off if you break any of their rules, but I have not heard it happening.. I hope they follow this rule, but they usually don't enforce their rules

Exactly, nobody wants to be the bad guy and get a bad review.

As previusly mentioned, the big question is will Carnival encore their own rules. As discussed countless times on this site, Carnival is terrible at enforcing their own rules. The two biggest rules they don’t enforce is the MDR dress code and smoking on the balconies. I will be very surprised if they strictly enforce this rule.

Just curious why Carnival would toughen a policy no one here seems to think they would enforce?

I'm sure they've received a lot of negative feedback on it and want to appear to be doing something. Maybe they think the threat of being kicked off the ship is sufficient to rein in most offenders.

It will be interesting to see if they actually enforce this. I've read several examples where they did not impose the $250 fine.

We just got off the Breeze Journey cruise and the smoking was by far the worst we have ever seen.

Hopefully this new policy will have an effect on reducing the number of people smoking in cabins, on balconies and in other areas of the ship where smoking is prohibited. However, if I'm reading the new policy correctly, it states that guests "may" be charged which is very different from "will" be charged.  I'm also curious about how well Carnival will enforce this policy.  As recently as last month, I observed people smoking on the port side of deck 10 (Glory) and several different Carnival crewmembers walked right past the group smoking and never intervened.  There were even "bunkering in progress" signs out on the deck.  The guests who were smoking sure did take their time also and lit one cigarette after another tossing them overboard when done.  I'm not sure if the guests who were smoking in prohibited areas or the crewmembers ignoring it and simply walking away were more at fault.  Rules just don't apply to everyone.

This just reminded me of the ship (possibly Princess?) that had a major balcony fire years ago.  I want to show the photos to my SO, who had never cruised before we met, and a Google search didn’t help.  Does anyone remember which ship that was?

What did you search? The words: "princess cruise ship balcony fire" returned many results. Star.

The policy as I read above specifically says "stateroom" and "balcony". It does not say anything about other places on the ship. It is much harder to "catch" a guest smoking in their room or on their balcony. I would be interested to know what constitutes "catching" someone. Does security have to see them in the act, see an ashtray full of butts, etc.?

Not sure, I closed the window when I couldn’t find what I was searching  for.  The problem was the number of incidents that showed up, including a couple in 2018.  Thanks, that was the one I was looking for.

Back when the Paradise was first built and designated as a smoke-free ship, the policy was very strict. I remember reading that a family was escorted off of the ship when their teenage son was caught smoking. I'm not sure if the family was fined, but I'd bet the parents were absolutely livid about having their vacation ruined.

$500 fine is too low. Raise it to $5k or disembarkation at the next port.

They're aren't being accused of murder.  I've found people will quit smoking out there with a little peer pressure (passenger to passenger).

As a non smoker, I would never report someone smoking on their balcony.

I agree, because it is very hard to really know where the smoke is coming from. Every cruise I have been on there has been someone smoking cigarettes, or pot, but I could never be sure of exactly where it is coming from. I would hate to blame the wrong people. If someone is smoking and it is bothering me, I would just say something to them....I think they would be smart enough to put it out.
