Wiltonian Posted February 6, 2019 #2 Share Posted February 6, 2019 Hi! An oft-asked question! Here are some suggestions:
canoncruiser Posted February 6, 2019 #3 Share Posted February 6, 2019 I find the HOLIDAY INN overlooking the port to be very clean and efficient. I know there are other places folks like but the place is comfy, close, reasonable and they lay on a decent breakfast.
Lanky Lad Posted February 6, 2019 #4 Share Posted February 6, 2019 It depends on how much you want to spend. There is plenty of choice from budget to high end.
alibabacruisers Posted February 6, 2019 #5 Share Posted February 6, 2019 We have stayed at the out of center of town Hilton, but more recently we stayed at the Premier Inn which was in a great location with shops and restaurants close by.
cruiseluvva Posted February 7, 2019 #6 Share Posted February 7, 2019 Our new hotel of choice is the new Southampton Harbour Hotel in Ocean Village, not to be confused with the Grand Harbour Hotel which we would not recomnend.
Ray66 Posted February 7, 2019 #7 Share Posted February 7, 2019 Myself, I would not recommend the new Southampton Harbour Hotel. We stayed there in November and didn't have a very good experience and it's also vastly over-priced.

Hmmm, can't agree Gill. We stayed there in August as the trains were off for three weekends and we had to drive for a change. We found it to be rather expensive for what we got. We paid well over £500 for dinner, B&B, but we only got £27 towards dinner, so had to pay supplements. Breakfast was okay. Restaurant was extremely noisy. The "suite" was only a slightly larger room with one gin and one whisky free of charge. Large balcony, but we weren't able to use it. The roof top bar seems to be the "in" place with queues outside waiting to get in. The place was bursting at the seems. We probably wouldn't rush back. Stewart We don’t tend to eat in the restaurant, apart from breakfast, but have a light meal in the bar, feeling we are going to be eating far richer food on board than we normally would eat. At the end of the day, it’s all down to what you like, and it suits us. Edited February 7, 2019 by cruiseluvva

I'd say it was fine for what we paid (about £120 for bed and breakfast (but I got it for nothing with my loyalty points)). A voucher for a drink when we arrived, they booked our taxi for the morning, breakfast was fine and we ate there in the evening as we did not want to venture out. I'd stay there again. Camgirl Posted February 7, 2019 #12 Share Posted February 7, 2019 We have stayed in many different hotels in Southampton. Definately did not have a good experience at either the Holiday Inn or the Hilton. We have used the Best Western Chilworth Manor for our last few cruises and had no problems. njkruzer Posted February 8, 2019 #13 Share Posted February 8, 2019 Stayed at the Premier Inn near the shopping mall. Clean, reasonably priced. Are there and it was reasonable. Convenient to walk to train or ferry for sightseeing.

john watson Posted February 8, 2019 #15 Share Posted February 8, 2019 If you have a large budget and want somewhere completely "off the wall" spend at least one night at one of the forts. https://solentforts.com Regards John
dfwguy Posted February 10, 2019 #16 Share Posted February 10, 2019 We like the Premier Inn West Quay- which is directly across street from the large shopping mall. Makes it convenient to pick up a few last minute items to take along the crossing
maryann2 Posted February 11, 2019 #17 Share Posted February 11, 2019 Agree the Premier Inn West Quay. Paid just 25 pounds a night in December.
akmday10 Posted February 11, 2019 #18 Share Posted February 11, 2019 If you are looking for budget room, then I'd recommend the Travelodge Southampton Central you know what you are getting and you are one street away from the high street with shopping centre about 5 minute walk away. Do not recommend the Star Hotel, we inquired about prices in Southampton before and it is extremely over priced considering how out-dated it is. brian1 Posted February 11, 2019 #19 Share Posted February 11, 2019 We have booked Holiday Inn in Sept.Harbour view room and breakfast inc.Still cheaper than Premier and Ibis on that date.
Rare 3rdGenCunarder Posted February 18, 2019 #20 Share Posted February 18, 2019 Another vote for Premier Inn West Quay. Whenever I book a TA out of Southampton, my next move is to book the Premier Inn.
FritzG Posted February 18, 2019 #21 Share Posted February 18, 2019 I just got a notice from trip advisor that the Grand Harbour has new management and owners. I hope they will bring it back to the high standards that we enjoyed several years ago. It had gone downhill in the past three years or so. It used to be our #1 choice in Southampton. turnip eater Posted February 18, 2019 #22 Share Posted February 18, 2019 https://www.leonardohotels.co.uk/hotels/southampton/grand-harbour?utm_source=google&utm_medium=local The Grand Harbour now has the grand title of ‘Leonardo Royal Hotel Southampton Grand Harbour’ Quite a mouthful.
