When you board just tell them you wish to set up a “cash account” you will be permitted to charge up to $500 to your stateroom before being asked to settle up at GS with either cash or a credit card.

what the other poster said. And when doing your on line check in select cash. We always use cash acct, it is just easier and we don't charge anything.

It's definitely easier but maybe OP only has a debit card or doesn't have a credit card.

You can only opt for a cash account at check in - if you want to add any to it, you'd have to do that at GS..

We always use cash account , they send reminder to your room when you get to $500 just pay cash at guest services and good to go . no 5% to use your money . have visa debit card too

Our last 6 cruises have been a cash account. When you fill out your paperwork at the beginning, just mark cash account.  Usually our 2nd to our last day, I go down and add my debit card for any overages.  We have never had an issue at all. I notify my credit union we are going out of the country and we have ever had any holds or issues with my card. Have a great time. 😊

I see by your other post that you are going to Bermuda.  If this is a 5 day cruise you will only be allowed to charge $300 before being asked to pay down your balance.

I always do a cash account. It seems when I've done a charge acct I have mystery charges that require a trip to guest service. An example would a charge for a drink when i have the deluxe bev pkg

I am currently on Oasis.  We set up a cash account for my DDs friend who is with us. No payment upfront required. This was done at check in when we presented our Setsail passes and passports etc. No visit to guest services needed.  We can settle the bill with the cash her father gave us at the end of our cruise.  We are keeping an eye on TV for any mysterious charges.  It's all looking good so far 😁

When we were on Anthem a week or two ago, I set us up on a cash account (my first time in the many cruises I have done with Royal that I have done this), just to see how everything worked and compare the experience of cash vs. credit accounts. A few things I noticed were, as stated above, being a 5 night cruise, we could only get to $300 before a payment needed to be made (no biggie since we had a large amount of OBC), I also had some question about how our Deluxe Package would operate (or if it still would) after the account was closed on the last night - turns out it still worked just fine, and if anything over and above were charged, I would just need to visit Guest Services once more to settle.

 

I kinda think I liked the overall experience better, especially because it did not incur a pending charge on my credit card each day, as it would have if I set up a credit account. Also, as was mentioned above, it’s a little easier to keep control of the expenses that might pop up in error - I myself have had individual drink charges, though I had a package, as well as non-returned towel charges on the same cruise! It took almost a week to get the refunds issued to my credit card, even though I pointed them out while on the ship (it was even a credit card, not a debit card).

 

Also, since we had a large amount of OBC remaining, when I closed the account at the end of the last night, they just handed me cash as it was listed as “refundable onboard credit” (make sure to check that any OBC you have is listed that way. If it’s not, you need to use it or lose it by 10:00 on the last night!)

 

...just some feedback from my experience!

 

Anyway, when you are checking into your cruise and it asks about your “onboard spending account” you will be given the option to enter a credit or debit card, or cash - just select cash. You will not need to pay any type of down payment, just know that you will need to make a payment if your onboard spending exceeds $300 for a 5 Night, or $500 for 6 or more. At the end of the trip, walk down to Guest Services, pay them in cash, credit or debit for the charges you made during your trip, and you will be on your way!

Quick question, Is it $300/$500 pp or per cabin? Also do you (or anyone else) knows how it works with one person who uses a credit card and one who uses cash?

Per cabin.  Each person can have their own account and set up as they wish.  They will work independently if each other

It is per person - each of us received a printed communication delivered to our stateroom that stated so on the second night of our trip (we did also ask Guest Services to confirm this when we visited, and they stated it was “per individual SeaPass”). As another person stated above, each occupant of the cabin may set up their SeaPass account however they wish (one cash, one card, both cash, both using the same card, etc...) if one opts to use a credit card, their account will be automatically settled on departure morning while a cash account will need to be paid/collected the last evening of your cruise.

It doesn't matter if you like paying 5% more to use your money or is that lose your money . If you have cash they will take it . If you go to cashier with your set sail card you will get printed token slip .

Some ships now have machines that allow you to directly pay for play using your SeaPass card.

 

However, you would need cash in USD to play live games and those machines that do not have the capability to directly charge the SeaPass card.

This helps a lot. My husband and I have a lot of trips coming up and I want to stick to our cash budget.
