Upsell offer .... meh!

For the second time only, we've received an upsell offer from an oceanview to a balcony cabin ... this time, for a total of $40 per day for the cabin from a premium OV.   I'm just not feeling the love as we thought the room we picked, up on the Lido deck, sounded like an interesting room type.  The last time we got an upsell was to Alaska and was $30 a day from an obstructed OV to a balcony and it was so worth it for that sailing ... and we were able to request a midship cabin on the Caribe deck.

This time, they didn't give me a number to call, just a request to email them back and they will charge my credit card if accepted and they will pick my cabin for me.  NO WAY!!  I don't want someone dancing overhead the entire sailing.

Anyway ... it's probably obvious I am turning it down.   I am just not thrilled with this offer.  I might be interested if it were a mini suite but not for a balcony of their choice.  Most of the ones that are available are right under the pool deck ... no thank you!!

Of note, this is only the second time we've booked directly with Princess and have only ever received upsell offers on those 2 sailings.  And,  I actually could have booked a balcony cabin cheaper at the time of booking than what they are offering in the upsell offer and I could have picked the cabin I wanted.  But, it's still fun getting the offer via email after having sailed on Princess over 2 dozen times.  Now, if they gave me an actual upgrade, I guess I would take it ... maybe!!

I have had the same thing happen for me lately.  I have 3 cruises booked, and have received "upsell" offers.  All three were priced higher than originally when I had decided on my cabin type, location and room.   The most recent was for the Sky Inagural.  I got a email promotion for free interior with a option to upgrade to a balcony for $60pp ( This is a 3 day cruise).  2 days later we received  a upsell to a balcony for $79 pp.

Oh, yes ... it really does speak volumes.  But, it wasn't until a couple of cruises back when I asked my big box store TA how they forwarded these offers to their clients when I was informed they don't pass them along at all.  I do wonder how many offers were not conveyed to me in the past .... as I used them a lot on various different cruiselines.  Now, I only book through that agency if I am already in a suite.

I wish I could ...

I meant the TA I used a lot in the past doesn't forward any upsell or move over offers to their clients.  I was told they are too busy for that....whoa!!

We got an offer for the free inside on December 1, despite the fact that we were already booked on the Regal for Dec1-8.  Right hand...left hand...

Most are comparing the current price so it looks like a good deal. They have no idea what the original price was.

This is so true.   I said to my TA - if I didn't think the price was worth it at the time of booking, what makes them think a higher price now will work? Oh well.  Maybe one day it will be a great Upsell and I'll say go for it!

BTW- my TA, (who is fantastic) forwarded me all 3 recent upsell offers within in a hour of them receiving it

I've recently switched TA's or just book directly with the cruise line.

Now, I ask TA's how they forward any upsell offers,  should they arise.

If you do get an upsell offer you'd like to take, you might try checking for the open cabins in the category. Make a list of any you'd take and email back with, "We'd like to take advantage of the upsell IF you could confirm cabin xxx or xxx.  Worked for us recently. They did try to accommodate us.  YMMV but worth a try.

Seems that they only work through emails now.

I did look through the available cabins that showed on the Princess site.  Only one was an acceptable cabin ... the others were in poor locations (right under the pool deck or all the way forward).   But, good to know I could still make a request via email ....thanks for the head's up!)  As for the offer we received, I could have booked that one acceptable cabin for more like a half of what they are now asking when I originally booked.

We recently accepted a second upsell offer for our next trip on the Regal, sailing this Sunday (we'd refused the first one a few months ago). Our TA always forwards the upsell offers to us, and for the first time we accepted, going from a std Balcony to a Mini for $139/pp. OK, not great, but worth it for us to get back into a Mini. When I received the email from our TA, I immediately went to the Princess site and saw that there were only a very few Minis showing as available for our sailing, none of them well  located and none of them acceptable. When our TA phoned Princess, sure enough they were holding cabins for upsell purposes that were not showing to the public, and it was one of those we grabbed.

When we received an upsell offer from obstructed view to balcony for our Hawaii cruise, I responded that I would only accept the offer if we could be moved to a specific cabin # that was a premium balcony. They accepted my request. Guessing they would have turned me down if I requested a mini-suite at the same upsell price, but next time I might try.

I received two upsell offers through one of the big cruise travel agencies on the internet before our cruise last month on the Crown Princess. They were out of our reach on price, though they did get better as the cruise got closer. The one time we took advantage of an upsell offer, I had booked through another one of the big cruise travel agencies but received the email offer directly from Princess.

Wow ... that's good to know.  I once received an upgrade offer (at no charge) from an inside to an obstructed oceanview cabin.  Best upgrade we've ever gotten so I am not complaining at all ... and it was a very nice location with virtually no obstruction so we were very happy!

It's funny that the one balcony cabin I checked pricing on when I originally booked is one that is still available.  At that time, it was $34 more than the premium OV cabin I booked.  They are now requesting $200 for that same cabin through that upsell offer.  That actually is the only balcony cabin I would accept for an upgrade, though.  As mentioned, the other ones are all under the pool so not at all interested.

We always book directly with the same young lady at Princess Cruises.  Two cruises ago, we had 6 balcony rooms and were upgraded to 6 mini-suites at no charge.  Actually, 4 rooms were booked directly with Princess and it was an easy process.  Two of the rooms were tied to our party but booked through a private TA.  It took many phone calls and a lot of wheeling and dealing, but eventually they received the same free upgrade.  I guess it just depends on who you are working with!

Just about any time you get an upsell offer, it's for cabins they can't sell because of location. I guess they figure that the upsell offer is irresistable.

Every upsell I have ever gotten and those I have taken have never been for bad locations. I was always able to pick my location.

I’ve received several upsell offers. They’ve all been far more than I wanted to pay except one short cruise last year when I was cruising with my daughter. Received an upsell offer yesterday for my Sky cruise in January from a balcony to a mini-suite for “only” $398 for a 7-day cruise. Nope, nope, nope. I can book the Sanctuary for the whole cruise for a heck of a lot less. Told my TA that if the offered a down-sell to an inside for a free cruise or humongous OBC, don’t even ask... grab it. 🙂

I recently did an upsell for our Christmas Sky cruise.  From deluxe balcony to mini suite.  They offered me an excellent mid-forward location between cabin only decks so it was a no brainer.  It was a significant savings over booking a mini suite outright and I am thrilled to have that huge cabin and the full tub!  Cannot wait.  What a treat.  OP you are right to not accept a cabin under the pool deck. Been there done that and it was horrendously noisy in the wee morning hours.  Never again!

The premium oceanviews on Lido are great! We had one once, and we really liked it. Larger cabin and floor to ceiling window. I definitely wouldn't have taken the upsell offer.
