Here we have: Six years elementary school (starting at 6 years age). Then 3 years of mid-high school. Finishing at 18 years with another 3 years of high school. Total -- 12 years. If you're exempt of compulsory army service (3 years for boys and 2 years for girls), you go to the College/University at 18. I grew up with elementary being 1-6, Junior High 7-8, and high school 9-12. Only graduation was High School

It is very popular and for all of Hubby's Canadian accent it's actually where he was born. When we lived in Sussex , Brighton was our go to beach day out which has a completely different vibe . Bournemouth has a University and is more vibrant than a lot of British seaside resorts. It has a nice promenade from Bournemouth all the way to Poole along the beach. Poole is famous for Brownsea Island where the first scout camps were held way back when Edited June 25, 2021 by sgmn

Our kids have nursery from 3 to 5, then infant school to 7, then junior school to 11, then secondary or senior from 12 to 16. At 16 you can either stay on at school and do two years at sixth form, or go to a Sixth form college or tech collage. University is usually 18 to 21, though apprenticeships are coming back into popularity. You can leave school at 16 but you have to do some kind of full time further education or apprenticeship until you are 18 Proms are a relatively new thing over here. We didn't have them but my kids generation did Edited June 25, 2021 by sgmn

I still did not hear that one until now, must be from growing up in Michigan. 😄 Did call them "double baggers" though. 🤭 I know...so mean. 🤐 Here in North Florida, I’ve heard about people being called “drips” all my life. Mostly guys, especially in high school. I’m sure they grew up to be CEOs of major corporations or great surgeons, or Bill Gates. I think it depends on the local school districts. we have free voluntary pre-K, then Kindergarten at age 5. Elementary school starts at First Grade Our local public schools are the same as yours: six years elementary, three years middle school, and three years senior high school. I went to Catholic schools, eight years elementary and four years of high school. Edited June 25, 2021 by jagsfan 1

Rare h20skibum Posted June 25, 2021 #20695 Share Posted June 25, 2021 Here, many send their kids to pre-K, which is private. Our schools have K,1 and 2 in one building. (My daughter teaches 1st there). Another building is for 3&4. Another building again for 5&6, and another for 7&8. The last four years (9-12) are all in the high school building. My grandkids just had pre-K graduation, and will not have another till end of high school. 1

Rare island lady Posted June 25, 2021 #20699 Share Posted June 25, 2021 Cold, drizzle, clammy "downeast Maine type weather today...fog rolling in heavy from the ocean. Thus good day to hang out inside the cottage. Lunch was the best Lobster rolls in Maine, (IMHO) which are my own homemade. Pays to be on good relation with your local fish monger, she actually asked me if I wanted "claw" or "tail" meat when I bought the cooked and picked Lobster meat. I was elated to be able to say "claws please" best part of the lobster meat in my opinion. Not happy with the local NE hot dog rolls lately, I simply shaved some small sub rolls just to get some butter on the sides and toast them. Some nice buttery pretzels and lunch is served! With wine and a Stella of course. 😉

I remember the discussion of not having the freshmen in with the older kids. They felt the maturity difference between seniors and freshmen was too great. That was in Indiana and they called it junior high. Our sons in Georgia had middle school, grades 6 - 8. Trends in education seem to go back and forth. 1
